Best Pressed and Loose Setting Powders

July 30, 2018

Best Setting Powders Laura Mercier, MAC, Armani, Chanel, La Mer

By popular request I’m rounding up the best setting powders I’ve tried for normal/combination skin in pressed and loose formats. I did a roundup of my Favorite Setting Powders back several years ago and sometimes looking back I cannot believe how long I have been blogging! I have normal skin but live in South Florida where the humidity and heat can get very intense! The last time I did my roundup I was living in San Diego and around 1-2 shades lighter in skintone. Living in Florida you cannot escape the sunshine even with hats and good sunscreen. Since I’m deeper in skin tone I usually avoid translucent powders that are white or super pale in color because no matter how “translucent” they claim to be, a lot of times they still leave a slight white/powdery cast. There are exceptions of course and I’m always happy when I find translucent powders that have just even a slight tint.

As a beauty blogger I try and test a lot of powders on my face. My preferences change throughout seasons (sometimes it can get dry here in the winter) and as I travel. I’ve included thoughts on powders I’ve reached for frequently this past year.

Pressed Favorites in Rotation

Best Pressed Setting Powders Armani, Becca, Charlotte Tilbury, Chanel Les Beiges and La Mer

For many years I actually used pressed powder foundations to set my makeup. So many think that layering powder foundation on top of powder will always result in a cakey heavy finish, but there are a lot of formulas that work if you apply with a brush!

  • Armani Luminous Silk Powder Foundation is in my Top 2 most repurchased powders. My match is Shade 4, the other shades up aren’t yellow enough or too dark and I’m really surprised this color has worked for me even though I’ve darkened with my Florida tan. This powder has super natural lightweight coverage. I use it as a setting powder because it has a more natural finish. It evens out the skin in a very subtle way, sets my makeup and is great for touch-ups.
  • Armani Neo Nude Compact Powder Foundation (reviewed here) is my favorite glowy setting powder. It smooths and illuminates skin in a beautiful way. I wore this during my Miami trip and was really surprised it didn’t look greasy even with the glow and a tiny bit of sweat. If you have super oily skin you might want to opt for a matte version though. For an all over finishing powder I can get away with three shades swatched here, I have Shade 4 shown above. This is currently exclusive to Nordstrom or Giorgio Armani Beauty. I love this texture so much I feel like I could buy a darker color as a contour/bronzer.
    • With both the Armani powders I would say they are definitely more powders, not really like a full coverage powder-foundation. Just wanted to note in case you were worried it would be too heavy for all over. Or if you’re looking for a fuller coverage powder I’d recommend trying different brands. I apply both with a brush.
  • Becca Be A Light Palette in Light-Medium has two finishing powders that work really well for my skin tone. The lighter one is more brightening but the darker one on the right is perfect to blur the skin and give a soft luminous glow. It’s not quite as glowy as the Armani but is pretty close. I like this because it has four colors for a perfect natural blush + contour look. Also available in a Medium-Deep option swatched here.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Perfecting Powder #2 is my next most repurchased powder. Color selection is limited but I’ve always managed to pull off #2. This is the best medium-full coverage powder I’ve tried. Skin is instantly smoothed in the most beautiful way. It’s silky, smooth and never fails me. It’s matte so it will reduce the shine and keep makeup set without getting thick.
  • Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour in No 20 (shown) and 30 have been powders I’ve used since they launched back in 2013. I usually find No 20 is best for an all over setting powder. It has SPF 15 but doesn’t have any flash back with flash photography. It is scented which I know some people don’t like. Another downside is that there’s a huge gap between 20 and 30. I can use the deeper colors as a soft contour. The powder has natural sheer to medium coverage you can buff into the skin and not overdo. While there’s no shimmer it does have a soft brightening glowy look when I apply.
  • La Mer The Sheer Pressed Powder is one of the best pressed powders I’ve used. It’s very expensive and color selection is limited but it wears very well. I’ve used both Light and Medium. Up until right now I used Light (used it enough to hit pan and repurchase). I’m finally tan enough to wear Medium (shown above). It softly blurs fine lines, sets makeup, looks natural and stays put. There’s a translucent option too which I have not tried.

Pressed Powders from MAC

MAC Next to Nothing Pressed Powder, Mineralize Skinfinish Natural and Studio Waterweight Pressed Powder

MAC gets it’s own category because they win hands down for best color range. I used the MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation years ago and had a horrible allergic reaction to it. Many of their foundations caused my skin to flare up so I resisted using it for a long time. I decided to give the line another try after reading reviews from others who had similar reactions. In recent years some have suspected the ingredients changed because they could start using their foundations again. I have not tried the powder foundation again (I might eventually) but I’ve had HUGE success with their pressed powders. I should make it a mission to try all their powders.

  • Next to Nothing Pressed Powder is the next best thing to La Mer’s Sheer Pressed Powder. Color range is pretty good but Medium and Medium Plus are neutral borderline pink and I typically need something golden/olive. Still this one works really well for a natural setting powder, looks great, doesn’t oxidize and the price point is reasonable to me. Review and more swatches here.
  • Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Plus and Medium Golden are my favorite mineral setting powders. I hit the base on Medium Plus and really like it. Coverage is heavier than a traditional powder and with mineral formulas they can sometimes feel heavy. I recommend applying with a buffing method.
  • Studio Waterweight Pressed Powder is one of the newer formulas. It’s very matte and with a sponge has full coverage. It sets and stays put for hours. There are two colors/portions with a warm/cool option that allows you to mix and customize your color. Coverage is smooth and really nice. It doesn’t feel heavy but upon application you can really see coverage.

Current Favorite Loose Setting Powders

Best Loose Setting Powders from Laura Mercier, Hourglass, La Mer, Becca, Marc Jacobs and La Prairie

From top to bottom:

  • Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is a classic and her loose powders are the only ones used up entirely several times. I’ve always been more of a pressed powder person because it’s more convenient and less messy. Hers is one of the best. It’s white but truly translucent. Many years ago she also had this in tinted versions and my heart broke when it was discontinued. I love this applied with a puff or a brush. It’s a staple to set makeup without adding any color or coverage.
  • Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder is one of the newest launches I’ve tried (reviewed here). It has the lightest weight texture out of any powder I’ve tried. Blurs fine lines and smooths skin. Completely colorless when you apply. Suitable for all skin types.
  • La Mer The Powder is a loose beige powder with a very tiny bit of luminosity to it. Coverage is medium in the way it smooths the skin but on me it’s colorless once blended. I love this but think the original version was better. The new version comes in a hefty glass jar which isn’t travel friendly but very sturdy. It’s infused with their Miracle Broth but I didn’t see any changes in skin hydration or texture wise. I was really happy with my splurge but due to the price I don’t think I’ll repurchase.
  • Becca Hydra-Mist Set and Refresh Powder is a cooling powder that feels like water mist when it touches the skin. It reminds me of the Prescriptives Magic Powder without the pink iridescent sheen. The Becca option does have light reflecting particles but it’s not pink like the one from Px. It sets makeup nicely and is translucent on my skin. A little goes a long way – I also feel this is probably better suited for those with dry skin.
  • Marc Jacobs Coconut Fine-Line Perfecting Coconut Setting Powder is the most matte powder I’ve tried. It’s also light in color but translucent. It has five forms of coconut and cocoa butter which makes sense to me as it’s not weightless. It’s on the semi-heavy side in terms of how it feels on the skin, especially when compared to the Laura Mercier or Hourglass options. It’s not cakey or drying. It does make the skin look fully matte without adding color.
  • La Prairie Cellular Treatment Loose Powder in Translucent 2 was one of my biggest splurges. I ordered this sight unseen based on online reviews. The color I picked is too dark for my skin unless I’m tan (like right now). The tub is HUGE and it also comes with a travel size. I really wanted to order Translucent 1 for a long time but didn’t want to splurge especially with less expensive alternatives. It’s an excellent ultra fine powder but sometimes it looks dry on my skin. If I use a hydrating foundation, spray my base with a good mist or tinted moisturizer the powder looks good. If I apply this over a matte finish foundation it ends up looking a little dry. It has coverage on me even though it’s “translucent.” Definitely not lightweight but it does a good job at keeping oil away throughout the day. I absolutely have to use a brush. Using the puff results in a very powdery looking face.

My favorite makeup brushes and puffs

Best Makeup Brushes and Puffs for Setting Powders

My favorite tools and puffs:

  • Laura Mercier Velour Puff is a classic no-fuss option. I wash it in the sink with liquid soap. You can air dry it, but I sometimes put it in the dryer. It’s 3# in diameter.
  • Cle de Peau Puff is an equally soft and fluffy powder puff. It’s slightly smaller in size compared to the Laura Mercier option.
  • Laura Mercier Bronzer Brush is one of her newly redesigned brushes. So many brands have revamped their tools brushes the past couple of years. I often use bronzer brushes for setting powder because they’re bigger and fluffy. This one is super soft and picks up powders well. It picks up just the right amount of color to apply product evenly on the face.
  • Laura Mercier Powder Brush is a flat large brush, it can double as a bronzer brush as well.
  • Hourglass Veil Powder Brush – super soft and fluffy with two sides. The larger is good for all over and the smaller side is nice for setting the under eye area.
  • MAC 140S is one of the best large powder brushes I’ve used. It is dense so I think it’s best used for pressed powder, but it’s versatile and I think you can really use any powder brush however you like!
  • Chanel Precision Powder Brush is a nice option for smaller areas or for touch ups. Many of you were surprised to learn their brushes were redesigned. You can see a more detailed post about it here.

Additional ones I’ve tried worth mentioning plus some more thoughts:

  • I still find the ones from my previous roundup excellent, especially the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed and Loose Powders but I have explored other options since moving to Florida.
  • The Laura Mercier Candleglow is a pressed powder I still consider a wonderful option for a soft glowing diffused finish. In high humidity it can get a bit glowy looking for everyday. It’s an excellent option for night (for me). I find myself gravitating towards more matte options these days.
  • MAC’s Patrick Starrr Set Powder is among my favorites but it was limited-edition. I suspect it might be similar to one of the regular MAC Set Powders but I haven’t checked in person to confirm.
  • I have also tried the Kat Von D Lockit and Cover FX Loose Powders, both are good, but I prefer the other options. For those with deep skin tones and feel that ALL white/translucent powders leave a cast, checkout Cover FX’s Perfect Setting Powder because they have a deep translucent option!
  • By Terry has a loose powder called the Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder that is highly rated, it’s translucent but the color is white. It does disappear on my skin but I feel leaves a very slight white cast and I think it is better suited for dry skin. Mine is normal. It also feels a little too powdery on my skin. I also might be the only person on the planet that didn’t love this.
  • Many years ago mineral powders were all the rage. They might still be today but I haven’t kept track of them. With the exception of the ones from MAC, most other mineral powders tend to be too heavy for what I’m looking for. They end up darkening and looking cakey on my skin type.
  • I still find the La Mer Powder Brush and Wayne Goss Brushes to be excellent for powders. I still use them on a regular basis but the ones above are what I’ve been reaching for lately.
  • Depending on humidity levels sometimes there’s nothing that will 100% last all day. If there’s humidity and you have sweat, you’re going to have to touch up at some point. But that doesn’t mean your entire face will slide off. Finding a good setting powder to make your base last is a plus, but what you wear underneath (moisturizer and foundation) is also going to impact how long your makeup will last throughout the day.
  • This Sephora video on the Difference Between Setting and Finishing Powder was interesting to watch. I personally feel like using 1 powder to set and finish works for me, but it was interesting to see their artist’s take on the difference and how to use them. I do sometimes layer powders like the Hourglass or Becca Be a Light on top of my set base.

My top three picks would be pressed options as I find them easier to use for touch up and for travel. Right now I would narrow down my picks to the Charlotte Tilbury, Armani Luminous Silk Powder Foundation and a two-way tie between La Mer and MAC Next to Nothing. Favorite loose powders are Laura Mercier and Hourglass right now. I also still love the MAC Patrick Starrr Patrick’s Powder but it was limited-edition. If you’re in the market for a good powder I hope this guide helps you pick a few to try! What are your favorite setting powders?

Press samples include the MAC Next to Nothing, Laura Mercier brushes, Hourglass Veil Powder + Brush, Chanel Precision Powder Brush and Becca Be A Light Palette.

Top 5 Favorite Neutral Lipsticks

July 29, 2018

Best Neutral Lipsticks Tom Ford, Charlotte Tilbury, Sisley, MAC and Pat McGrath Labs

I’m a neutral lip lover and in honor of National Lipstick Day I’ve narrowed down all my favorites to my top 5 neutrals. This includes lipstick only – I’m still a lip gloss and tinted balm lover at heart, but for lipsticks these are my favorites of the moment. I broke out my backups of these for today’s post. Each of these colors I’ve already gone through at least 1 full tube – this is how I narrowed down my picks for my top 5. If I have used them up and repurchased it must be good because it usually takes me forever to use anything up. On the nails in the top photo is OPI Samoan Sand (with three coats).

  1. Tom Ford Lips and Boys in Bradley is probably my most-worn nude since it launched, lip swatches here and compared to the Girls here
  2. Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Pillow Talk is the best my lips but better neutral pink, on the lips here
  3. Sisley Phyto-Lip Twist #11 Litchi is the prettiest soft peachy nude, it was such a splurge but 100% worth it (never swatched it on the blog, but will be swatching more of this formula soon)
  4. MAC Matte Lipstick in Yash is a great matte neutral nude, I can’t find lip swatches of this one on the blog but I do have it arm swatched here, also love Patisserie, Touch, Velvet Teddy and Mehr
  5. Pat McGrath LuxeTrance in Sextrology is an easy to wear baby pink that doesn’t wash out my tan complexion, lip swatches here

Best Neutral Lipsticks Tom Ford Bradley, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, Sisley Phyto Lip Twist 11, MAC Yash, Pat McGrath LuxeTrance Sextrology

I’ve also included a few more runner ups and I’ve linked previous lip swatches for each color below. These are some neutrals I love for their texture, lasting power, creamy feel and color. There’s one matte which is the Laura Mercier color below – I add balm to it because the formula can pull a bit dry but the color is perfect.

Summer Miami Getaway

EAST Miami Hotel Review | The Beauty Look Book

Earlier this month we took a spontaneous trip to Miami. This was our third visit to Miami (first trip here during Art Basel and second trip snippets here for the Boat Show) and we decided to try all new things. Some might say staying in South Beach is one of the best ways to experience Miami. I think it’s definitely worth doing and we loved staying at the beach on previous trips. There’s actually a lot more to explore around the city too! This round we stayed in Brickell for three days and had a great time. We also spent time in Wynwood (where the food is amazing!). There’s still so much on my list that I want to see, I hope next time we can stay a little bit longer. Trip recap, food recommendations and highlights below.

Where We Stayed

We booked a room at EAST, Miami located in Brickell. It came highly recommended by a few friends and we decided to try it. It’s attached to the Brickell City Centre which has some really good shopping like Diptyque, Saks, Sephora etc. In addition it’s one of the stopping points for the Metromover which is a free transit system. They are mini metrorail cars which take you short distances from Brickell to Bayfront Park or Museum Park.

I found a good deal on Hotels.com for a Bay King Room. These are corner rooms that run around 410 sq feet with views of the city and bay plus a wrap-around balcony. Our room was on the 26th floor and the views were amazing! We had a really nice stay and both highly recommend it. Rooms were clean, beautifully designed, modern and the views were incredible with both sunshine and stormy skies. Summer weather in Florida can be a bit crazy but we are used to it living in Tampa now for a year and half (time flies!). As we drove into Miami we passed through a major thunder lightening storm. Rain was so heavy we could barely see the cars in front of us. By the time we arrived at Brickell the skies were clear but we did see storms throughout the week. Lightening shot through the entire sky in the evening which was both scary and fascinating at the same time from high up in the sky. Storms are usually scattered and often pass through quickly. However there are times multiple storms pass through!

Where We Ate

Again a priority on our agenda was to find amazing food. We had a rather indulgent few days but it was 100% worth it. Our previous favorites include Bodega and Taquiza in South Beach and we were both dying to go back but forced ourselves to try new places. We had one miss, but the rest were hits! Places we tried:

  • All Day located at 1035 N Miami Avenue @alldaymia – We stopped here for breakfast, as we drove up we had second thoughts but decided to try it anyways because of the reviews. This was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Don’t let the exterior deter you! Inside is minimalist and cute. We ordered the Runny and Everything, Avocado Tartine and one regular croissant. For our caffeine fix I had the Double Shot + Milk and Andrew ordered the Pourover. Everything was excellent although a bit steep in price.
  • Coyo Taco (Brickell) located at 1111 SW 1st Ave @coyotaco – This was our only miss. Perhaps the other locations are better, but the food was just ok. Not worth the calories for either of us even though the menu looked really good!
  • Panther Coffee (Wynwood) located at 2390 NW 2nd Ave @panthercoffee – Dozens of you recommended this place to me months ago. I’m so glad we finally made it. This place has the strongest and most intense coffee and espresso I’ve ever tried.
  • The Salty Donut located at 50 NW 23rd St #112 @thesaltydonut – Life changing donuts. I think the flavors change but the Tres Leches was the best one. We bought extras to take home to Andrew’s parents and I wanted to eat them all the 4 hour drive back to Tampa. I will do anything for these donuts.
  • 1-800-Lucky located at 143 NW 23rd St @1800lucky – This is a food court-style restaurant with different Asian food stations. We thoroughly enjoyed the buns and dumplings.
  • Taiyaki NYC in Miami, located inside 1-800-Lucky @taiyakinyc – I’m so impressed Andrew found this place! He told me earlier in the day that he found the perfect place for dessert but wouldn’t tell me where. They had a limited Pineapple Twist that comes inside a small pineapple. I ordered one of the rainbow sprinkle options in their fish-shaped ice cream cone which has red bean at the base. My hands were entirely covered with melting ice cream as I ate it all.

Other Visits

We took our time to explore and do a little shopping. We actually didn’t make it to South Beach this round because there was so much to do and see in Brickell and Wynwood! The weather this time of year is heavy with thunder and lightening storms. They are scattered similar to Tampa. One area will be experiencing a downpour while a few miles away will be clear and sunny.

  • Brickell City Centre – This is a cute mall and I stopped by at Saks Fifth Avenue since we don’t have one in Tampa. There are always so many cute clothes inside this one! I bought this Joie top and wore it right away (also on sale here). There’s a Diptyque store as well with the Miami candle but I had stopped by on previous trips so didn’t go back this round.
  • Museum Park – We stopped by to walk around the beautiful park area and visit the Perez Art Museum but the day we stopped by the Museum was closed. Hopefully next time! We got some really good pictures as the area is beautiful.
  • Wynwood Walls and the neighborhood – We had driven through Wynwood during Art Basel last December. If you’ve ever been to Miami during that time you know it’s pretty chaotic everywhere! We were happy to stop by this time when it was less crowded. We ate at a few places here, stopped by the Wynwood Walls and walked around the area.

What I Packed + What I Wore

I packed a bunch of shorts and tank tops. This light blue top from Bella Dahl has been one of my favorites for months now. It’s perfect for Florida weather. I also picked up a few things while in Miami. I had to change each day as we ended up leaving our umbrella in the car each time we were out and got caught in downpours. I was 100% drenched head to toe. Each time we thought the rain would pass within 15 minutes or so, but it did not. The good thing about Florida rain is that it’s hot warm rain. Once it stops you can dry off fairly quickly but even damp clothes are prone to sticking to you with the humidity. My note to self is to bring my own umbrella even if Andrew says “it’s probably not going to rain.”

Summer Packing Away Bigger Carry On

What I packed in my Bigger Carry-On from Away. We brought two other suitcases with us, one for Andrew and one for workout clothes and sneakers. I didn’t end up wearing any of my sneakers during the trip. I’m forever in sandals!

Shown above I packed one small crossbody (which held up in the rain really well, I wouldn’t recommend letting it get soaked though) and one tote. I also brought a couple hats but didn’t end up wearing them this round.

Makeup Picks: I was really impressed that my makeup held up in Miami heat. Even Andrew was! The only problem is with travel photographs the color doesn’t always show up in photos but in real life it looks good and stays put! If you want a full list of everything let me know and I’ll list it all. I found the Armani Neo Nude Powder and Becca Be a Light Palette in Light/Medium to be amazing for setting the face and staying put. I finally tried the Armani Face Fabric (my shade is #4) because so many of you were asking me to. I don’t like the ingredients but it truly performed well and looked like skin in a natural matte way. The key is to apply with fingers and rub it in a circular motion. No clogged pores or irritation with this one! The Chanel Les Beiges Multi Color Powder in Medium served me well all through the trip. My top skincare pick is the Kate Somerville Eradikate Cleanser because it really helps prevent breakouts. And as always my go-to sunscreen is anything from Supergoop!. Everything fit inside The Daily Edited Transparent Cosmetic Case and Large Cosmetic Case.

Miami Wynwood Travel Diary

Miami Travel Diary

We had a really nice and relaxing time. Miami can get pretty hectic if a major event is happening so it was nice to explore the city when it was a bit calmer. In hindsight we should have booked one or two more days to enjoy the city more, but for a last minute spontaneous trip I think we’d call it a success! Hopefully we can go back to Miami soon. I’m dying for another Salty Donut. I was in a state of sugar bliss the entire day after we stopped by.

Thanks for following along! As always I truly appreciate your travel recommendations. If you have any more Miami recs let me know in the comments! I have some really exciting news I’ve shared on Instagram @beautylookbook today – thank you so much for all your love and support 🙂

Nordstrom Tom Ford Beauty

Tom Ford Iris Bronze Eye and Lip Set Review + Swatches

July 24, 2018

Tom Ford Iris Bronze Eye and Lip Set Nordstrom review + swatches | The Beauty Look Book

Tom Ford launched a new eyeshadow quad with two mini lipsticks in the Iris Bronze Eye and Lip Set ($87) for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It sold out the very first day of early access and I have been checking the site daily to see if it has been restocked. No luck yet but I am hopeful it will be. The set features Iris Bronze Eyeshadow Quad which is new and two miniature lipsticks in Casablanca and Spiced Honey. Since it has sold out I’ve tried to dupe both the eye and lip colors and have found some!

Tom Ford Iris Bronze Eye and Lip Set Nordstrom review + swatches | The Beauty Look Book

Iris Bronze has the same smooth and creamy texture that all of the regular Eyeshadow Quads do. The colors are velvety, blend nicely and layer perfectly on the lids. This quad has a pale cream shimmer, a shimmering light tan champagne, soft warm bronze satin and a deep wine with a tiny hint of sparkle.

In search for dupes:

Tom Ford Iris Bronze, Cocoa Mirage, Honeymoon, Private Shadow swatch comparisons

The colors are practically identical to his Private Shadow Singles in Hush, Body Double, Iris Bronze and Videotape. I own all of these except for Iris Bronze (but I have seen it in person). There are very slight differences that I can see when I look super close but on screen and from a distance the colors look like dupes. I’ve added Fire Sign and Warm Leatherette as I have those colors. In case you missed it you can see my Tom Ford Private Shadow swatches here. I also felt Iris Bronze had a similar vibe to the MAC x Patrick Starrr Glam AF Eyeshadow Quad from holiday, swatching side by side proves it’s kinda similar but still distinctly different.

In addition I’ve added Eyeshadow Quads in Cocoa Mirage and Honeymoon swatched for comparison. Similar undertone but colors and finishes are different.

The Lip Colors in Spiced Honey and Casablanca in this set are available in full-size individual form. The minis in the set are sample size so they’re a lot smaller than even the Lips and Boys. You will most likely get more than a few uses but they will be used up fairly fast. They’re a nice way to try the formula in case you’ve been holding out on splurging as the individuals are very pricey. Spiced Honey is a pale nude pink but on my lips it washes out my face and clashes with my olive skintone. It’s workable if I add a deeper liner like Edward Bess Natural or MAC Boldly Bare. For a nude I really prefer colors like Bad Lieutenant or Autoerotique (both swatched + reviewed here) or the Tom Ford Lips and Boys in Bradley (review here). Casablanca is a classic medium-deep rose that darkens on my lips. I prefer Indian Rose as it’s a tad bit softer and for me easier to wear for everyday (reviewed in last year’s set here).

Tom Ford Miniature Lip Color Spiced Honey and Casablanca

The Tom Ford Lip Colors are full coverage creamy lipsticks. They have a semi-thick finish but aren’t heavy feeling. There is a slight soft vanilla scent but it’s subtle and fades after a few minutes. Lasting power of the lip color itself is very good.

Overall I give the set a thumbs up even if the lip colors need a tiny bit of adjustment for me. Sometimes it’s nice to have minis and I don’t always mind mixing or layering lip colors. The eyeshadow quad is really beautiful – I prefer it to the singles for convenience, I would have preferred that Tom Ford launched new eyeshadow quads or at least a system similar to the MAC Pro Palettes where you can create your own palette with singles. I am hoping that Nordstrom will restock the Tom Ford set, my mind is still blown that it sold out the first day! Or at the very least I hope new quads will be launched in the fall. If you own the singles, I don’t think you need the quad but I am really happy to own it.

The Tom Ford Iris Bronze Eye and Lip set is exclusive to Nordstrom. You can still find the individual Private Shadows and Lip Colors at all Tom Ford counters. Available online at Nordstrom, Sephora, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beautylish and Tom Ford Beauty.

Were you able to purchase the set for early access? If so what did you think?

P.S. There are a few new lip products out including a Lip Lock Priming Balm and 20 shades of Lip Sculptors. I will be reviewing the balm and a few of the lip pencils soon! Also the Glamglow x Becca We Know Glow Duo finally launched online!!

Hourglass Cosmetics

New Hourglass Launches: Ambient Lighting Blush Palette, Veil Additions + Caution Extreme Mascara

July 23, 2018

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette Nordstrom, Veil Translucent Setting Powder, Veil Retouching Fluid, Caution Extreme Lash Mascara review

There have been quite a few new launches from Hourglass over the past months and I have a roundup review today. They have some complexion products for the face in their Veil Lineup, a new Ambient Lighting Blush Palette (Nordstrom exclusive), and a new mascara. Items reviewed today:

Up first is a look at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. This has one new shade Surreal Glow and two repeats in Luminous Flush and Mood Exposure. Surreal Glow is the new color which is a soft light peachy pink glow which was actually in the Hourglass Holiday 2016 Surreal Light Palette. Each powder is hand made so no two are identical and colors can be the slightest bit different depending on how much color you get in each swirl. The Surreal Glow in my Nordstrom Palette is slightly deeper than the one I have in the Surreal Light Palette. If you’re an Hourglass fan there’s a high chance you already own 2 of the blush colors. I wish they would launch palettes with all new shades, but I do like these for their convenience, especially for travel.

Swatch comparisons below to a few colors from two previous Hourglass palettes in Holiday 2017 Ambient Lighting Edit Volume 3 and Surreal Light Holiday 2016. I also found one close dupe with is the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Nuanced (reviewed here). The difference being Nuanced is a lot more shimmery and frosty so it’s more dramatic and won’t quite give you the same effect. Color-wise it’s the closest one I have.

Next are the Veil Product additions including the Veil Translucent Setting Powder, Veil Powder Brush and Veil Retouching Fluid in Natural. Their Veil Mineral Primer has been a long-time best seller for them. It’s an oil-free version so best used with oil-free foundations. Earlier in the spring they launched a few additions.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder, Veil Powder Brush and Veil Retouching Fluid in Sand review

The Veil Translucent Setting Powder is an excellent translucent setting powder that doesn’t add any white cast to the skin and sets the face in a very natural way. On me it keeps makeup staying set all day without any cakey look. Texture is ultra fine and it does have a very subtle blurring effect to smooth out pores. It’s talc-free, invisible on the skin and has no flash back. The Veil Powder Brush is a double-ended brush that is loose and fluffy. I really love the way it feels on the skin and it performs really well. I use the larger side for loose or pressed setting powders and the smaller one is perfect for their blushes. It’s not quite as matte as the Marc Jacobs Coconut Setting Powder. The Hourglass one also has a lighter weight feel compared to Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder. All three are excellent, I cannot pick a favorite but I’m really pleased with the way the new Veil Translucent Setting Powder has performed.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder review

The Veil Retouching Fluid is the best thing I’ve tried to highlight and enhance complexion. It has just the right amount of pigment and sheerness to apply under eyes, between brows upwards and anywhere you want to brighten the skin. Most of us use concealer to highlight and brighten. A good blending technique with a damp beautyblender will do the trick to smooth everything out, but in my opinion I think most of the concealers are too opaque to apply on wide areas of the face. I still do it occasionally when my foundation doesn’t have enough coverage, but in the Florida heat layers on layers of makeup are prone to caking eventually. For this formula the color Natural is my best match. It cancels out redness but in a natural way. It doesn’t cake or crease. It’s easy to touch up mid-day on top of your makeup and blend.

Hourglass Veil Retouching Fluid in Natural review

I swatched all the colors in store, sorry for the poor lighting quality but I took this in the mall with my iPhone, but I hope this helps as a reference for the color range. I feel like the gaps in between each color are fairly decent. The pigment is sheer and quite forgiving so I think you can easily find a match.

Last but not least is their new Caution Extreme Lash Mascara. I think it’s very good but it’s not my favorite as I cannot get it to consistently hold the curl. What it does do is give volume, intense color, and dramatic lashes. It stays on all day with zero smudging in my experience. It has lasted on multiple tests through Florida humidity, a swim in the ocean and an afternoon at the beach. It really looks amazing when it works! The holding the curl issue isn’t always working for me but so many mascaras don’t hold the curl for me. My solution is to sometimes layer different formulas for added volume and lasting power. A lot of you have messaged me saying you use this trick all the time! Right now my top two favorites are still the L’oreal Lash Paradise Waterproof and Tom Ford Waterproof Extreme. If I layer this new Hourglass mascara with the L’Oreal it works like a charm 100%.

Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara Review

Overall some nice additions and a few things to consider as beauty staples. The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette is a Nordstrom exclusive, but all other items can also be found at Sephora, Beautylish, and Hourglass Cosmetics. If you’re looking for minis to try Sephora has a few options with a Mini Caution Extreme Lash Mascara and a Veil Prime and Set Mini Duo available. Have you tried these yet? What did you think?

Best Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Beauty Exclusives Sets for Skin, Hair + Home

Best Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Beauty Exclusives Sets | The Beauty Look Book

Today is the day the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale opens for everyone! It runs through August 5th. I have a few more sale swatches and reviews coming up in the next few days but today I have a roundup of the best beauty sets I hauled for the skin, body, hair and home. There are a lot of great value sets and deals for beauty and as the ultimate beauty junkie I could not be more thrilled. For quick reference, you can see my initial haul post here. Also reviewed so far are the NARS Endless Summer Collection, Charlotte Tilbury sets and the Sisley All Eyes on Sisley Set. Several of the items I bought already sold out, I’m keeping my fingers crossed they will be restocked! I hauled quite a few of the sets this year:

A look at each set plus thoughts and first impressions. For the hair I always look forward to Moroccanoil sets. They often have jumbo sizes which are hard to find individually for me and I love when they come with a pump. I’m actually pretty stocked on shampoo and conditioner right now so I bought this year’s Moroccanoil The Ultimate Hydration Collection for my mother-in-law to try out. It’s $74 for a $104 value and contains a 16.9 oz Hydrating Shampoo, 16.9 Hydrating Conditioner, 0.69 oz Body Souffle and 0.84 Hair Oil Treatment.

For the body, I had to buy the Le Labo Body and Hair Travel Set for Andrew so he can have one for travel. Both of us love the Hinoki Shower Gel. It has a really potent unique scent that lingers after the shower. We’ve gone through several of the full size which I need to repurchase again. This particular set has four 2.5 oz sizes of the Shampoo, Conditioner, Shower Gel and Body Lotion.

The Malin + Goetz Jumbo Rum Body Wash came at a perfect time for me. I discovered it during our stay in Miami and fell in love with it. It has a gentle feel to it but has a really delicious dark rum scent. I usually gravitate towards body cleansers that have a little more strength in terms of cleansing. This one is gentle and works best if I lather with a wash cloth. I’m obsessed with the scent though and it does leave the skin soft. It’s 32 oz and comes with a pump. Win win for me.

The beautyblender blend.cleanse.carry Set has two pink beautyblenders, a mini solid cleanser and a carrying case. I was really excited about it but have to admit I was hoping it would be a hard storage case instead of a soft silicone case. This was my fault though as I did not read the online description and in store I didn’t take the time to touch it. The price cannot be beat though and I’m excited to put the case to the test.

Glamglow is always a go-to for me. I was tempted to stock up for myself but decided to stick with what I have and repurchase items I use up later. I did buy the Glamglow The Clear Skin Set for my brother. It’s a $96 value but for the sale it’s priced at $59 for a full size SUPERCLEANSE Clearing Cream to Foam Cleanser, SUPERMUD Clearing Mask (the best in my opinion) and a mini Matte Glow Moisturizer. I also bought the Glamglow x Becca We Know Glow Duo which just launched online. I have not had a chance to try this yet but did hand swatch the powder which applies like a warm gold color on the skin. I hope this comes out in a full size eventually. The pink gravity mud appears to be the same as the current silver version in the purple tube, just a different color.

The Diptyque Floral Candle & Eau de Toilette Set is a beautiful set with three mini candles in Baies, Roses and Tubereuse. It has the three matching spritzer perfumes in mini sizes which are perfect for me to carry around in my purse. I had been eyeing Do Son for months now although it’s more of a fall scent to me so I’m trying to wait before buying. The mini will get me by for now. It also has Eau Rose and L’Ombre Dans L’eau (also better for fall).

Last but not least is the Jo Malone Travel Candle Collection which has three 2.1 oz travel candles of Lime Basil and Mandarin, English Pear and Freesia and Peony and Blush Suede. This was an impulse buy for me. The only one I truly love is the Lime Basil scent so I might end up exchanging this for a couple of the full size candles or one of their hand washes instead.

Sisley All Eyes on Sisley x Nordstrom Set Review | The Beauty Look Book

I’m continuing my reviews of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Beauty Exclusives with a look at one of the value sets from Sisley Paris. This year they have two starter/introductory sets for the Anniversary Sale including All Eyes on Sisley ($210) and Introduction to Sisley ($175). The line actually has quite a few starter sets for other products and today I have a look at the All Eyes on Sisley Set which includes two full-sized items of the Sisleya L’Intégral Anti-Age Eye & Lip Contour Cream (0.5 oz) and Eye Contour Mask (1.16 oz). Both are great to help reduce puffiness around the eye area – something my eyes are very prone to.

Sisley Set with Sisleya Eye and Lip Contour Cream, small ridoki roller and Eye Contour Mask

The Sisleya L’Intégral Anti-Age Eye & Lip Contour Cream is an anti-aging cream that helps firm and lift the eyelids and under the eyes it reduces puffiness. It comes with a small ridoki massage tool which works wonders to help prep and smooth the eye or lip area before you apply the cream. It has a metal plated roller with an amazing cooling and smoothing effect. You massage it in strokes around the eye moving away from the center of the eye. The gentle motions help support circulation and works really well to reduce swelling around the area.

Sisleya L'Intégral Anti-Age Eye & Lip Contour Cream & Massage Tool

For the cream, a small amount goes a long way. It’s hydrating and in the immediate term reduces the appearance of dryness and fine lines. Skin feels instantly refreshed without any greasy residue. It absorbs into the skin, has a hydrating feel, doesn’t cause breakouts under the eye and has no scent to it. Key ingredients include Persian acacia, yeast and soy protein complex, soy peptide extract, Atlas cedar extract and pomegranate fermented extract. I’ve tried it on both the lips and eyes, I prefer it on the eyes. Full size plus more details listed here.

Full ingredient list per Sisley: SORBITOL, MINERAL OIL, OLEYL ALCOHOL, PROPYLENE GLYCOL DICAPRYLATE/DICAPRATE, CETYL PHOSPHATE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, TRITICUM VULGARE (WHEAT) PROTEIN, GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA (LICORICE) ROOT EXTRACT, TRIETHANOLAMINE, STEARYL ALCOHOL, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) FLOWER EXTRACT, DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA (CARROT) ROOT EXTRACT, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, SESAMUM INDICUM (SESAME) SEED OIL, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, PANTHENOL, POLYACRYLAMIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CARBOMER, C13-14 ISOPARAFFIN, CETEARETH-33, SODIUM METHYLPARABEN, SORBIC ACID, TETRASODIUM EDTA EG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, OCTOXYNOL-13, LAURETH-7, TRISTEARIN, METHYLPARABEN, ACETYLATED GLYCOL STEARATE, FRAGRANCE, ETHYLPARABEN, BUTYLPARABEN, BHT, ISOBUTYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN, (CONT. LINALOOL)

Sisleya L'Intégral Anti-Age Eye & Lip Contour Cream & Massage Tool

The Eye Contour Mask has been a favorite since I tried it from the Beauty Subscription Program (it’s exclusive to the Sisley website). This particular tube is my third one. It’s a mask you leave on for around 10 minutes then wipe off. It also hydrates and depuffs the eye area and soothes the skin. They recommend using 2-3 times a week and I use it around 2 times weekly. It’s one of my favorite things to do mask-wise. Ingredients include Arnica, Chestnut tree, Gingko Biloba, Vegetable Glycerin, Vitamins E and B5, Chlorella, Malachite, Linden, Alpha-Bisabolol, Rose Water. Full size plus more details listed here.

Full ingredient list per Sisley: GLYCERIN, WATER/EAU (WATER), HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, ISODECYL NEOPENTANOATE, SODIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ROSA CENTIFOLIA, FLOWER WATER, PANTHENOL, ALLANTOIN, BISABOLOL, TILIA CORDATA EXTRACT, MALACHITE EXTRACT, ARNICA MONTANA FLOWER EXTRACT, GINKGO BILOBA LEAF EXTRACT, AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM (HORSE CHESNUT) SEED EXTRACT, ALGAE EXTRACT, ROSA DAMASCENE FLOWER OIL, HYDROGENATED POLYISOBUTENE, PEG-40, HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, PHOSPHOLIPIDS, POLYGLYCERYL-10 STEARATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, DISODIUM EDTA, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, DEHYDROACETIC ACID, TOCOPHEROL, PHENOXYETHANOL, POTASSIUM SORBATE, SODIUM BENZOATE, (cont. citronellol, geraniol.)

Sisley Eye Contour Mask review

For the Nordstrom Sale this set is priced at $210 but the value of both products individually is $355 so it’s like they are adding the eye mask to the set for free. The prices are indeed very steep but I think it’s 100% worth the splurge. I used up and repurchased the Eye Contour Mask which I never want to be without. The eye cream is one I enjoy using and the roller feels really nice on the face. If you have more than a few things on your radar, make sure you check out the Gift With Purchase going on. It also has a step up option.

Sisley All Eyes on Sisley x Nordstrom Set Review | The Beauty Look Book

You can find the All Eyes on Sisley Set at Nordstrom. Today is the last day for Early Access (for cardholders) and the sale officially opens up to the public tomorrow! All the Beauty Exclusives are on their site now. A few of you asked if I had purchased any other skincare sets after my initial haul post. I fell in love with the Malin + Goetz Rum Body wash in our Miami hotel and was thrilled to find a Jumbo Rum Wash available for the sale so I picked it up. I also ordered the Glamglow The Clear Skin Set for my brother. And then not on sale but I repurchased the La Mer Moisturizing Soft Lotion because Andrew ran out and asked for a replacement. There is a nice GWP for La Mer so I added a powder to replace the one I used up to take advantage of the gift.

One last note is the Sisley team is hosting another giveaway for 1 US reader. I’ll be posting it on my Instagram page @beautylookbook later today so be sure to check it out for a chance to win this set.

Do you have any Sisley favorites? Or skincare favorites right now? Let me know in the comments! P.S. The Color Twist Set from last year is still available online and was just marked down.

Many thanks to Sisley for hosting the giveaway! Nordstrom set provided for review.
