Best Budget Beauty Mascaras

Budget Beauty Mascara Try On Haul | The Beauty Look Book

Today I’m excited to share a budget beauty roundup for the new year! A few of my holy grail products are from L’Oreal and long-time readers know the L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara and Primer have been my go-to’s since the day they launched. It was love at first swipe and based on some of your feedback I decided to give a few other formulas a try. I’ve partnered with Walmart to give you a closer look at some new favorites! Read on to see how they held up on my super straight lashes.

Best Budget Beauty Mascara for Straight Lashes

L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Primer and Waterproof Mascara

L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Primer and Mascara

First another look at my favorites the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Primer and Waterproof Mascara. The primer has a light pink tint which I find helpful so you can actually see that you’ve coated your lashes evenly. I apply the mascara on top when the primer is still wet for the best results. This has been the best formula for my straight lashes. It holds the curl and does not smudge while adding volume and length. It does take a good remover to take off at the end of the day but I don’t mind the extra work if it means I don’t have racoon eyes by afternoon!

L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara

L'Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara and Primer

The L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara has been rated one of the best consistently among magazines and I tried it many years ago and couldn’t remember what I thought so I decided to give it another try. I really like the volume it gives and it did not smudge on me. I think it’s a good everyday no-fuss kind of mascara. I prefer the other formulas I tried for holding the curl but if you don’t have issues like me I do think this is a good one to try out. (I’m going to try the waterproof version of this next.)

L’Oreal Telescopic Lengthening Mascara

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara Review

There are a few formulas of the L’Oreal Telescopic Lengthening Mascara and I tried both the Regular formula (gold tube) and Waterproof formula (blue tube). This has a super skinny rubberized wand with a four sides. The flat sides allow you to load product onto the lashes while the comb/teeth separate and lengthen product. This is the best lengthening formula I’ve tried. I was impressed that both formulas did not smudge and held the curl. If you want more volume you can layer this one with 2 coats (or layer another formula on top). But if you want length this is a great one. I can also use this on my bottom lashes without getting product on my skin. I prefer the regular formula since it’s easier to take off at the end of the day. Since it doesn’t smudge on me I give it a huge thumbs up! It held up during a sweaty workout too.

L’Oreal Air Volume Mega Mascara

L'Oreal Air Volume Mascara

The L’Oreal Air Volume Mega Mascara has a chubby bristle brush and gives mega volume with a few coats. I like that it’s not clumpy but coats the lashes with an even semi-thick layer of product to add serious volume. It feels weightless like the name implies so it’s not heavy at all. You will need to give the bottle a couple pumps to get it going.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

Maybelline Sky High Mascara

My new holy grail is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara. I tried the regular washable version and it has rubberized applicator. This coats the lashes evenly, adds volume in a natural way, applies smoothly without clumping. I just ordered the Waterproof version to try in the next week to compare, but I love the regular formula. It holds the curl, doesn’t smudge, adds length and volume.

My top two favorites out of the new ones I tried are the L’Oreal Telescopic and Maybelline Sky High. I still really love the L’Oreal Lash Paradise but sometimes it’s nice to have other options to rotate with. I’m even more thrilled to find non-waterproof formulas too that don’t smudge so taking it off at night is easier! I feel lucky I haven’t had any recent fails with mascara testing. I will be adding more to my try-on list so if you have any suggestions let me know!

What are your holy grail mascaras? As always I love reading about your loves! You can find all the ones I bought and tried at Walmart.

Ask Sabrina 1.10.2020 | The Beauty Look Book

I’m excited to start a new series called Ask Sabrina where I’ll be answering your frequently asked questions! I thought it would be a fun way to share more about myself and roundup the FAQs you’ve sent my way! Today I’m answering more personal questions to start but I’m open to other topics for future round ups! I have accumulated a long list already from recent polls so I have some I’ve saved for next week but feel free to leave more in the comments or you can always send me an email too.

1. How long have you been blogging? How did you get started? Do you blog full time? Is blogging your career? What do you do in real life? How long did it take you to get noticed by brands? How many hours a day do you work on the blog?

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about my story on how I started The Beauty Look Book. My first blog post was back in May 2009 and it started as a hobby while I was in graduate school. Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog was looking for guest writers, I submitted an idea on Le Metier de Beaute, she accepted it and I had so much fun I started my own! The blog grew by word of mouth among other beauty junkies who loved luxury beauty or hard to find brands. At that time I didn’t know blogging could be a career let alone generate any revenue. I had no idea press samples existed either!

I didn’t start monetizing my blog until around 5 years later and it was only possible thanks to another blogger (Amy from @cafemakeup) who referred me to an affiliate network and helped me get approved. I had applied to a few over the years and every single brand rejected my application. At this time I was still working at a corporate job in finance and as the blog grew it began to take more and more of my time. It got to a point where I could not have work/life balance, but I was so passionate about the makeup I made it work. I’d wake up at 4 am to write articles, I’d rush home after work to take some photos before the sun went down, I’d blog on weekends and every waking moment! Once my blog generated enough income to surpass my corporate job earnings, I decided to leave my corporate job and blog full time. It took about 6 months of consistent earnings before I felt confident enough in myself to pursue blogging as a career. I talked it over with a few close friends and family before I made the leap. Most of them told me “don’t do it!” “you can’t leave your corporate job” and that I was making the biggest mistake of my life. I am 1000% happy I took that risk because I think it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It’s allowed me a lot of freedom and flexibility to be my own boss.

Working for myself has had its fair share of ups and downs. For me it was a risk worth taking. I am happy that this type of career has evolved over the past decade and is being recognized more as a legitimate career. Today brands, retailers, agencies and affiliate networks are more accessible to bloggers and influencers who want to partner and work together which I think is great! A lot of people still ask me “what do you do in real life?” and I think they forget that bloggers, influencers, YouTubers are still real people and that blogging, taking photographs, making videos, writing etc. is in fact “real life” for many of us.

I feel like I could write an entire series on my blogging experience! I’ll save more for another post.

2. What’s your favorite TV show?

The Office – best show of all time!

3. Favorite movie?

Tie between Elf and Love Actually

4. Favorite ice cream?

Jeni’s anything! My favorite flavors are Cream Puff and Brambleberry Crisp, although Andrew says Gooey Butter Cake is the best one, he actually ordered some individual gooey butter cakes after trying the ice cream lol!

5. Favorite handbag and why?

My favorite right now is the Goyard Cap Vert in black. It’s a versatile everyday bag and I love that it’s crossbody and small but not super mini. I still love my Tory Burch Perry Bombe Bag but it’s really small. Sometimes it’s nice to have a bit more room which is why I love the Goyard. You can see what fits inside in this reel @beautylookbook.

Below wearing: ATM School Boy Tee and Agolde Parker Shorts, Celine sunglasses

6. What kind of camera do you use to shoot all your photos?

I’ve used the Sony a7RII for years and really love it! I just recently replaced it with the Sony a7RIII which has a lot more features and really like it as well. For the lens I mainly use the FE 24-70 mm/2.8 lens. For videos and vlogging (which I haven’t published any videos yet) I’ve been playing with the new Sony ZV-1 and I really love it. I mainly buy my equipment (cameras, lens, stands, flash attachments etc.) from B&H, Adorama or Amazon.

Sony a7RII and III | The Beauty Look Book

7. What does your husband do? How did you meet? Can you show us your husband?

Andrew and I met nearly 20 years ago! We were both attending different colleges in San Diego at the time and we met on a study abroad trip in Oxford, England. He was one of the TAs, I was one of the students. We started dating several months later after and we’ve been together ever since! I guess you could call us college sweethearts. After college he went on to pursue a law degree and now practices family law. I would love for him to be a full time Instagram husband (which he probably thinks he already is). He’s made a few appearances in my stories and also this reel and this one too.

Andrew and Sabrina

8. As a Florida transplant, how do you feel about Florida? Do you miss California? Will you ever move back? Are you planning on staying in Florida long term?

Both Andrew and I love Florida. I am surprised it has grown on me over the past three years given how attached I was to life in San Diego, California but Florida definitely feels like home now. When we first moved here I was so homesick I cried myself to sleep every night for nearly 3 months. But we’ve found a lot to love here. We love the weather (heat, humidity, rain and all), the people, the beaches, the casual laid back atmosphere and the sunshine. I do miss California a lot and I’ve only been back a couple times to see family and friends. Right now we don’t know if we will move back or stay here. So much has changed in the past year we really don’t know what the future holds – but we are very happy living in St. Petersburg, Florida!

9. Biggest changes in beauty habits during quarantine, if any? Any changes in purchases, beauty routine, or what you decide to wear?

The biggest changes for me have been what I wear (or don’t wear) on my lips outside. Lip gloss is a disaster with face masks! I still wear lip balm or a matte liquid lipstick if I have to wear a mask. Lip Balm has been an essential for me, without it my lips dry out and start peeling. As long as it’s not super sticky or thick it still works for me (I like the Fresh Sugar Advance Therapy Lip Treatment). Stores and malls have opened up here in Florida but you still cannot touch the testers so I tend to order things online more often. It feels safer to me anyways to order online versus going to the mall, even with social distancing. I’ve also been more aware of acne prevention and hyperpigmentation from acne scarring. I wash my face more often. I have to be super careful of acne where the mask covers my face. I feel like I’ve been using spot treatments more often than I have in the past!

10. What is an interest or hobby you have that would surprise us?

I think a lot of you might be surprised I’m into fitness and weight lifting!

That wraps up my first Ask Sabrina round up! Happy for any feedback or if you want to send more questions feel free to leave them in the comments or email them to me. If you can put in the subject line Ask Sabrina Series suggestion or something along those lines it will help me filter and sort them! Let me know if you think 10 is a good number of if you want more questions answered per week! Topics can be anything! If there is enough interest in a blogging/social media topic I might dedicate an entire post or few series of posts.

By Terry VIP Expert Palette in Paris Mon Amour and Twinkle Glow Highlighter

Happy New Year to you all! I have my first review of the year with a look at some items from By Terry. They launched a new VIP Expert Paris Mon Amour Palette* and Twinkle Glow Highlighter* over the holiday and I have swatches for you today.

Twinkle Glow CC Highlighter

By Terry Twinkle Glow CC Highlighter

The Twinkle Glow CC Highlighter has sold out most places but is still available right now at Beautylish. It’s a multi-dimensional highlighter that has a soft peachy rose gold shimmer to it with a very luminous glow. It’s not quite as metallic as the Becca Shimmering Pressed Perfectors but has that same soft texture and a similar vibe in how it catches the light and adds shimmer. On my medium tan complexion, it pulls warm and almost bronzey but still has enough contrast on my skin to be a highlighter color. If you’re lighter than me it will definitely pull more on the bronzey side. If you are darker than me I feel like the gold tones will be more visible.

By Terry Twinkle Glow CC Highlighter

Swatches below next to the Brightening CC Palette (back in stock and reviewed here) which has a softer shimmer with sheerer pigment and the Diorskin Nude Luminizer in 01 (which has a more visible glow).

By Terry Twinkle Glow + Brightening CC Palette Swatches

It has a smooth application even though it’s quite shimmery. Lasting power is excellent and it stayed put without fading all day on me. As lovely as it is I don’t know that I would call it a must-have – you can get a similar effect with other brands.

VIP Expert Eyeshadow Palette

By Terry VIP Expert Eyeshadow Palette Paris Mon Amour

The VIP Expert Palette in Paris Mon Amour has a mix of satins and mattes. I really like the combination of colors! It has a couple warmer shades that make for pretty layering but also has a good mix of neutrals so it’s not too warm. Colors include:

  • Matte white
  • Satin cool brown
  • Shimmer baby pink
  • Shimmery soft peach coral
  • Deeper dusty matte brown
  • Darker bronze shimmer
  • Metallic sparkle gold (works as a topper)
  • Shimmery wine plum
  • Shimmery sandy taupe
  • Matte ivory

The colors have a soft look to them but are easy to layer and blend. You can create a wide range of looks with this palette and I do think it’s one you can wear year round.

Quick note that the highlighter was limited-edition and has sold out most places by now. I was able to still find it at Beautylish as of this morning if you have it on your wishlist!

Glowing Makeup Look I’m Loving Right Now

December 28, 2020

Glowing Makeup Favorites from Nordstrom

Happy Monday! I have a new glowing makeup roundup today featuring a few new launches alongside my favorites. So many of you love a pretty glow and I’m excited to partner with Nordstrom to share one I’ve been loving lately. I’m covering the entire look from my base, eyes, lips and cheeks!

Charlotte Tilbury Star Aura Palette

Foundation + Base Essentials

Best Foundation, Concealer and Powder from Nordstrom

Having a good base is one thing that makes me feel more confident and put together. I have a lot of foundations I love and rotate between but the one I’ve reached for the most is the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (I’m currently shade 6.5). It has medium buildable coverage to even out the skin but looks natural and lets the skin show through in a natural way. I love how natural the glow is too!

For concealer the best of the best is from Cle de Peau. The Stick Concealer (I use Ocher or Buff) is best for spot concealing as it’s very opaque and a little goes a long way. For under eye brightening or concealing the Radiant Corrector for Eyes is better for me as it’s more fluid, easier to blend, but still very opaque and covers well. It will stay put and does not crease if you set properly with a powder.

For powder you all know I love the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder in the Translucent shade and the new beige color Honey. If you want the best no-fuss setting powder Laura Mercier is the way to go! However pressed powder is my format of choice – it’s not as messy, you can use it on-the-go, it’s easy to keep it in your purse and in general it’s easier for me to use. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Powder is my go-to and I wear the shade in Medium.

My Favorite Glow Product

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter Review

The best thing I can recommend to anyone who wants that lit from within kind of glow is the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Filter Primer and Highlighter. I’ve gone through so many of the Shade 4 and Shade 3 to highlight and add dimension to the skin. It’s a multi-tasking product that you can use as a dewy primer, add it on top of your foundation or use as a highlighter on cheeks or eyes. It comes with a sponge tip applicator which I use to swipe on the face and then I blend/buff it out with a beautyblender to melt into the foundation where I want added glow or brightness.

They have just added some more shades in the line to fill in some of the gaps. You can use a shade to match your skin or 1-2 shades lighter to highlight and brighten the skin. I also use one shade darker for days I want more warmth in the glow. I picked up shades 2.5 and 4.5 and swatched them for you. For reference I wear her Magic Foundations in Shades 6.5, 6.75 or 7 depending on how tan I am. I find that the Hollywood Filter in Shade 4.5 is perfect for a subtle glow that isn’t too dramatic or contrasted with my skintone. Shade 4 still works for me too. (More shades available online.)

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter swatches

Eye Makeup Staples

Eye Makeup Staples Tom Ford Eyeliner, Charlotte Tilbury and NARS

For eye makeup staples, the best liquid eyeliner is the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen (although Cle de Peau is also really quite excellent). It has two sizes for applicators so you can control how precise or bold you want the line to be. It does not smudge, it’s easy to use, has super rich deep pigment and it lasts a long time. For an ultra dark smokey line the Charlotte Tilbury Rock N Kohl Eyeliner in Bedroom Black is one of the darkest ones I’ve tried. It’s easy to blend/smoke out with a smudge brush for a sultry look.

For a good mix of matte and shimmers the Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam II Palette has been a really pleasant surprise. It looks a little boring in the compact but it has everything you need for a complete eye look. Pigment is smooth, rich, easy to blend – it’s everything I could want in a single compact!

New Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Filter Eyeshadow Star Aura

The latest from Charlotte Tilbury is the Hollywood Flawless Eye Filter Palette and I am so excited to share a look. I bought both shades and will have a more detailed look later but for now I have swatches of Star Aura. It is beautiful eye palette with finely milled shimmers. The colors have the prettiest sparkle to brighten the eyes and open them up. I did find I needed to add a liner to complete the look, but I love how it melds into the skin and just makes your eyes glow.

Top Glowing Cheek Products

Best Glowy Blushes and Highlighter Palette Charlotte Tilbury + Hourglass

My most used cheek products this holiday season for a pretty glow have been from Charlotte Tilbury and Hourglass. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Bronzer in Medium is the most natural looking matte bronzer – it has a super soft finish and on me it’s impossible to overdo. I’ve had a soft spot for the Hollywood Superstar Glow Highlighter this year too. I have so many highlighters it’s hard to find one that I think is unique enough to make it special. This has a soft pink peach tinge to it mixed in with the opal shimmers and is so flattering on the skin!

For cream blushes the Cle de Peau Cream Blush #4 has remained my go-to for the best soft peachy pink blush that looks natural and lasts all day. It’s hard for me to find a cream product that won’t just melt off the skin and this one works the best out of all the cream blushes I have tried.

For a natural glowy blush the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic blushes are the best ones out there. I’ve bought nearly all of the colors and love Ecstasy (shown) for a peachy pink shimmer and Love Glow (for a nude) the most.

The best cheek palette I’ve tried this year is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Sculpture Palette. Anytime I wear it I get compliments for the natural glow it gives the skin.

(I’m wearing the Charlotte Tilbury Bronzer, Cle de Peau Cream Blush #4, Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter in this post.)

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Highlighter

Favorite Lip Color of the Year

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lips

Last but not least the best lip color of the year for me has been anything Pillow Talk from Charlotte Tilbury. I love the Lip Cheat Lip Pencil, Matte Revolution Lipstick, Collagen Lip Bath and Jewel Lips. These get me the most questions on Instagram stories and readers are always asking “what’s on your lips?” – it’s always one of the Pillow Talk shades! (Top I’m wearing is also from Nordstrom Treasure and Bond.)

Holiday Nail Polish Swatches OPI, Smith & Cult + Dior

December 27, 2020

Holiday Nail Polish Swatches OPI, Smith & Cult, Dior

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday! Andrew and I had a nice Christmas eve with close family. We made Christmas dinner at our house this year and tried making gingerbread houses too which was fun but super messy! I have a nail polish swatch roundup of a few colors I’ve been loving this season. I have been sticking with my usual neutrals for the most part this year but thought it was time to switch things up and play with some sparkle and shine.

OPI Naughty or Ice? is a pretty semi-sheer pearlescent white. It’s similar to OPI Happy Birthday but the holiday Naughty or Ice pulls a little more champagne/warm.

OPI Naughty or Ice?

_________

OPI Snow Falling For You is a metallic light pink. It has minimal visible brush strokes so it applies pretty smooth. I love this pretty pink!

OPI Snow Falling For You

_________

OPI Tinsel Tinsel Star* is a light blue-grey shimmer. It pulls on the sheer side with 2 coats (shown below). You can get more opaque coverage with 3.

OPI To All A Good Night* is a beautiful complex metallic gunmetal shade. It flashes different sparkles of silver, blue, grey. I love it for a deeper but fun color.

OPI Merry In Cranberry is a pretty pearly cranberry shade. It has full smooth coverage with 2 coats.

Favorite Holiday Long-Wear Makeup Essentials

December 22, 2020

Best Longwear Makeup Staples

So many of you have asked for long-wear makeup recommendations that are budget-friendly. Today I have the best of both with a holiday makeup round up! I’ve partnered with Walmart to share a few of my go-to makeup staples that can take you from a daytime to a more dressy look.

Day to Night Holiday Makeup Staples

Base Essentials

Base Essentials Estee Lauder, NARS, Laura Mercier

For a long-lasting base the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation has been one of the best long-wearing matte finish foundations I’ve tried. My match is 3W1 Tawny. It has full coverage but doesn’t look flat. To brighten or conceal dark under eye circles the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is probably my most-used concealer! It’s creamy, easy to blend, doesn’t crease on me and once set with a powder, stays put and looks fresh for hours. To set my makeup I have quite a few loves, but the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder is my holy grail no-fuss powder to keep everything in place.

Bronzer + Blush

Milani Powder Blush in Coral Cove

For a good bronzer, I have raved about the ones from L’Oreal so many times. I think they’re easy to use and they have a good range of shades to pick from. I reach for the L’Oreal Summer Belle Bronzer in 03 Amalfi the most for a budget-friendly option. For blushes I’ve been really impressed with the ones from Milani and love the Powder Blush in Coral Cove. It’s a really bright coral pink and you only need a tiny sweep of color to brighten the complexion and make you look more alive. The powder is easy to blend and layer, plus it has very good lasting power.

Lips

Budget Friendly Liquid Lipstick and Lip Gloss

I have SO many loves for lips! The L’Oreal Rouge Signature Matte Lip Stain has been one of my absolute favorite liquid lipsticks with a soft matte finish. They’re not drying and they have a pretty satin matte dry down so they look soft and pretty. The formula comes in a wide range of colors, I love I Create for a soft everyday pink rose and I Empower is an easy to wear peach nude beige. They feel weightless on the lips and have excellent coverage and lasting power. (Colors swatched top to bottom: I Empower, I Create, I Rule, I Choose, I Represent.)

L'Oreal Matte Lip Stain in 416

L'Oreal Liquid Lip 418

One of my newest tries is the L’Oreal Infallible Matte Lip Crayon. It’s an opaque twist up style lipstick in a slim tube. It has smooth opaque coverage with intense color payoff. I bought a few of the shades to try and love 500 Caramel Blondie with the Maybelline Lifter Lip Gloss in Ice layered on top for a pretty pink look. For a brighter holiday lip look 502 Sweet and Salty is a really pretty berry pink.

L'Oreal Matte Lip Crayons

L'Oreal Matte Lip Crayon 500

L'Oreal Matte Lip Crayon Sweet Salty

I swatched a number of the Maybelline Lifter Lip Glosses in my post here. If you’re looking for a good plumping gloss with high shine I highly recommend checking them out! (Colors shown Ice, Topaz and Opal.)

Eye Makeup Staples

L'Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara Primer and Waterproof Mascara

For eye makeup, I have a soft spot for L’Oreal. The L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara Base is one of the few lash primers I have used, loved and repurchased many times. It has a pale pink tint to it so you can make sure you’ve coated all the lashes. I apply and then follow with the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara Waterproof when the base is still wet for a lot of volume and definition. This combo gives me the best look for my super straight lashes – and it holds the curl! For a good long lasting eyeliner you can’t go wrong with the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner. It’s easy to apply and truly does stay put.

For eyeshadows I have been so impressed with the Wet N’Wild Icon Eyeshadow 10 Pan Palette in Nude Awakening. It is a great palette of wearable basics and has everything you need for a complete eye look. Every color has good color payoff and the darker matte shades have really intense pigments that are easy to blend.
