What a year it has been! I cannot believe that 2018 is nearly over, it flew by so quickly. Today I’m rounding up my Best of 2018 Beauty Favorites with a mix of new discoveries alongside a few staples from previous years. I went through this entire year of blog posts to make sure I didn’t miss anything! Also a number of you have asked for my absolute favorite tried and true staples so I’m going to put together a separate post of beauty things I cannot live without. For this roundup I focused mainly on new products I really loved that I tried this year.
Complexion, Highlighters and Base Products
- Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter in #4 was the best cream glow highlighter, full review here (cheaper dupe from L’Oreal reviewed here)
- Armani Neo Nude Powder wins for best all over finishing glow powder, I repurchased 4 and 5.5 after finishing those up, full review here
- NARS Highlighting Powder in Fort de France* was the best classic highlighting powder I tried this year, swatches of all colors here
- Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Sticks* were the best cream highlighter formula, review here
- Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Glow Powder * once I figured out how to use this on top of cheeks as a highlighter (not really as a setting powder) was the best natural glow powder I tried this year
- Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush * in Incandescent Electra and Iridescent Flash were my top 2 blushes (both on the face swatched here), they literally are going to last me forever, even with regular use I’ve barely made a dent, I also ended up really loving the Ambient Lighting Palette Edit Vol 4 (reviewed here)
- Natasha Denona Diamond and Blush Palettes* were the most unique options I played with this year, full review here
- Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 6.5 and Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion in Buff* were my top 2 foundations
Best Eye Makeup
- L’Oreal Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara was my most-used favorite mascara of the year
- Hourglass Arch Brow Volumizing Gel in Soft Brunette* was the best brow gel I tried this year, review + swatches of all the shade options here
- NARS Eyeshadow Quad in Singapore *, it was one of the first two quads launched and sold out almost everywhere but you can still find it now online at NARS Cosmetics, review here
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Eyeshadow Palette ended up being one of the best eyeshadow palettes I tried this year (tied with Pat McGrath), I didn’t review or swatch it but it lives up to the hype 100%
- Pat McGrath pretty much won on all counts this year for me, her 6-pan MTHRSHP palettes* were among my favorite (loved ALL of them), the ones I liked the most were Platinum Bronze and Dark Star, spring colors review here and holiday launches review here
- Sisley Phyto-Khol Star Waterproof Eyeliners * was my favorite eyeliner formula of the year, I really appreciate that even after months of use it has still not dried out like many other twist up formulas do, full review + swatches of all shades here
- Hourglass Scattered Light Eyeshadows were stand outs for sparkly long-lasting shadows I loved to layer or wear alone, all shades I bought swatched here
Favorite Lip Products
- Bite Agave Lip Mask was my go-to balm of the year
- NARS Orgasm After Glow Lip Balm * was the best luminizing balm I tried, review here
- Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow and Fussy were in my top 2 for lip gloss this year, both on the lips here
- L’Oreal Color Riche Shine were the best affordable shine lipsticks I tried, just as good as luxury brands in my opinion (better than Chanel and YSL to me), swatches here
- Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat and Matte Revolution in Pillow Talk were my favorite neutrals
- Pat McGrath LUST Gloss* was in my top 2 gloss formulas of the year, I really loved Flesh Astral and Divine Rose, review + swatches here
- Pat McGrath Matte Trance Lipsticks win for best matte lipstick of all time, swatches here, additional colors that were press samples here, here and here
- Pat McGrath Lip Fetish Tinted Balms* are hands down my favorite tinted lip balms I’ve ever tried, review here
- NARS Velvet Lip Glides in Swing and Roseland were two of my most-used neutrals (alongside CT Pillow Talk)
Skin Care Loves
I really found myself gravitating to a lot more skincare tries this year compared to makeup. I wasn’t able to review everything as testing often takes so long to truly see results. I’ll do an updated skincare routine post in the new year so if you have any questions please leave them in the comments! My absolute favorites:
- Tatcha Water Cream and Sisley Black Rose Cream * remained staples for moisturizer but I did discover a couple new ones I think are really amazing
- Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream wins for best moisturizer of the year for me, Andrew also loves it, and I saw while in Los Angeles my brother bought this too! I think it’s suitable for any skin type, normal or dry, it’s not irritating, isn’t too heavy and moisturizes perfectly. We are on our second jar, I am going to have to order a third very soon.
- Glow Recipe Watermelon Juice Moisturizer was the best lightweight moisturizer I tried, it’s great for those humid months here in Florida but really nice year round too
- Farmacy Honey Drop Lighweight Moisturizer * was also another excellent find, non-irritating and not heavy, more loves from this brand in this post
- Sisley Black Rose Oil * was the best face oil I tried, I’m trying to use it sparingly because it’s so expensive! review here
- Foreo UFO * was the most innovative skincare tool I tried, I really do love it and it makes my skin feel and look better
- Glamglow Supermud remains my favorite clarifying mask to clean out pores and clear up the skin
Hair Favorites of the Year
- Sisley Precious Hair Oil * wins for best hair oil for me, review here and here
- Moroccanoil Treatment is always a classic, I can’t live without this product
- Aquis Hair Towels were a great find based on recommendations and reviews I read online, this is another product I never want to be without, after testing the Long Lisse Luxe and Waffle Luxe version I found they both performed well, I prefer the waffle version as I like texture in my towels, I also prefer the longer options
- Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask With Temporary Coloring in Warm Chestnut was a great find for me after getting highlights earlier this year, it leaves my hair so shiny and soft!
- Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask * was my favorite try of the year, I finished 2 jars already, I want to buy another but am testing a few other brands out right now (Oribe and Kerastase) – my friends say Kerastase is the best and on a recent Instagram poll many of you said Oribe is better, I’ll keep you posted!
- T3 Trio Whirl Trio was the best and only hair tool buy of the year, I relied on my Dyson and Harry Josh Dryers * and they’ve served me well, and I still love my HAI Ceramic Straightener, I decided to only buy one curling tool and have really loved it! If you see any hair posts of me with curled hair like this post or this one and also here I’m using the 1.5 inch wand.
- Living Proof Dry Shampoo, Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo for Dark Tones and IGK Jet Lag had a 3-way-tie for me in terms of dry shampoos this year, there are actually a lot that I loved this year but if I were forced to pick 3, these would be the ones I’d live off of for the rest of my life

I love the tatcha water cream thanks to your rec! I also absolutely adore fenty fu$$y. The bite agave lip mask feels amaaaaaazing until I develop a nasty rash 🙁 I’m seriously soooooo sad. I haven’t found a better lip balm/mask and I’ve tried just about everything
so many favorites! my favorite foundation was nars radiant long wear, the coverage is incredible. Still using up my old becca highlighters which i love. for skin care, i’m really loving the PCA line of products.
My favorites for this year are the Tom Ford Virgin Orchid quad and lipstick in Devore. Chanel’s holiday single shadows were amazing as well! A new to me favorite is the La Mer Soft Fluid foundation, so good!

Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumizing Paste and Orlando Pita Play Body Breakthrough-amazing-my hair usually goes flat but no more-I keep backups of these two products.I have never used any hair product that so dramatically improved for volume and body, and I am 64 years old! La Mer foundation is a wonder-good color matching looks like real skin wears well and minimizes look of pores.

I love Tatcha Water Cream. I’ve tried the Belif Water Bomb but prefer the Tatcha hands down. I haven’t tried the Drunk Elephant moisturizer you mention but use the Vitamin C serum every day and love it!

I fell in love with all things Drunk Elephant–love the Marula oil, C-Firma serum, TLC Frambroos serum, B-Hydra, and Lala Retro cream. Some other faves are the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask, IT Cosmetics Superhero mascara, Colleen Rothschild retinol supreme night oil, and Coola matte mineral face sunscreen!

I have only recently purchased the Fenty gloss in Fenty Glow but I’ve been using it every chance I get! It’s such a nice formula and looks amazing on the lips. I get compliments when I wear it.

My favourites for the year include: ABH Sultry eyeshadow palette and Colour Pop’s Lux lipsticks in Liquid Courage and Gallop, plus their Brown Sugar lipstick range.
For the first time L’Oreal had a True Match foundation in Ivory Rose (porcelain, with pink undertones) and it is fabulous.
I wore Liquid Courage a LOT this year too! I really was surprised at how lovely those lipsticks are, especially for the price point. I would definitely purchase more of them. 🙂
I’ve been wondering ever since I bought it though, since they do sell liquid lipsticks, why wouldn’t they save that particular name for a lipstick that actually WAS liquid? lol

I agree with your picks. I also discovered a great drugstore foundation. L’Oreal 24HR INFALLIBLE PRO-GLOW FOUNDATION. I can’t vouch for 24 hour wear but it does hold up in the Florida summer sun and humidity. I like to wear it over Tatcha pore perfecting sunscreen broad spectrum SPF35 PA+++.
My fav eyebrow pencil: Etude house drawing pencil, Fav oil/balm cleanser: Heimish, Brightening concealer: Clio airy fit!
I definitely found a lot of products I loved this year; Nars Wanted Blush Palette (can’t believe I hadn’t tried Nars blushes until then), Hourglass Scattered Light, the Fenty gloss in Fenty Glow was a surprise favourite that I wasn’t expecting to love, and basically my entire skincare routine which I feel is finally mostly perfect (Drunk Elephant serums are my absolute favourite).
Really loving Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonder Glow and Light Wonder foundation. Everyone and I mean everyone comments when I wear it. Two of my friends have gone out and bought it. LOL. I am loving RandCo hair products and Drunk Elephant skincare. Still loving my Sunday Riley Juno too! I think I will always wear Lipstick Queen Medieval- it is the PERFECT red lipstick/balm. NARS Bound is in heavy rotation as is Love Supreme. Happy New Year everyone!

Favorite beauty discoveries this year are the Natasha Denona Gold Palette, Tatcha Camellia Cleansing Oil and Kissu Lip Mask, Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide cream (you influenced this one!), Kerastase Resistance shampoo and conditioner, Becca Sunrise Waves bronzer and Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions mascara.
Some new favorites this year are Dr. Sam Bunting’s Flawless Cleanser, Violette La Dangereuse Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy sculpting face trio (perfect blush for my fair skin), and Pat McGrath’s lip fetish lip balm.

I’m working through my list of favorites and yours is so inspiring!! I definitely think this year was a year of glosses (bye mattes) and cream blushes/highlights! I think I definitely loved Lilah B and Kjaer Weis cream products! I love the “dewy look” for makeup and I’m glad that cream/gloss products in real strong this year. Also I’m working on pushing my hair to 3-days without washing and that’s definitely made me discover a lot more hair products and experiment with more hairstyles!

I appreciate the list of favorites for the year. Oftentimes with new products it’s hard to know what is tried and true. One of your likes is the Bite Beauty Agave lip mask which I recently bought. This is one of my favorites for the 2018 year, as well as the Charlotte Tilbury eye shadow pallette. For the former, I love how it hydrates and helps restore moisture especially during the dry winter LA months!
The Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a palette – Beauty Glow, Giorgio Armani Luminous silk foundation, Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Powder, Pat McGrath lipstick, & various Drunk Elephant skin care products have definitely been a hit for 2018 for me!

Kosas tinted face oil foundation, Tatcha primer and Tatcha pearl have been my big standouts for this year. The Kosas lipsticks are nice, too, though I haven’t worn mine enough to call it a favorite yet. It’s another “is it a balm or a lipstick” type and so far I really like it.

Lately I have been reading the ingredient labels far more closely. I traded in my expensive moisturizer for a hyaluronic acid cream as a humectant and then use an occlusive (barrier) over this layer to seal in the moisture. Usually the moisturizer is Cerave (ceramides and niacinamides) or LaRoche Posay moisturizer. Staying away from fragrance (no allergies but also trying to stay away irritants).
Loving the LaRoche Posay Toleriane Double Repair Facial Moisturizer with SPF over the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry (it has no fragrance unlike the regular Neutrogena one). I spend the money I save on facial skin care on lovely make up that you, Sabrina, recommend! And to be honest my skin is better and smoother with the switch away from the skin care at the “counters.”
My favorite this year has been the Westman atelier stick foundation and would love to see what you think in the new year as it was my first stick formula so I’m not sure how to really compare. Also glad I got the dyson hairdryer in the end!!!

I ended up buying the Ambient Lighting Palette Edit Vol 4 from Sephora with the 20% off promotion. I flippin’ love it. I really did not think it would work with my tan skin tone, but now it’s my go to face pallet.

Great roundup! It reminded me of a few things I had my eye on but never got around to trying, (especially the new nars quads!). Some of my favorites have been the reformulated nars shadows this year, blush-wise I’ve been going back to some old favorites like clinique heather pop and my burberry silk and bloom, for skin I found I really enjoy Orogin’s matte moisturizer in the pink package, it’s a strange concept to me but it is great for no stickiness during the day! Oh and you didn’t mention fragrance, but I’m head over heels with the nordstrom exclusive chanel fragrance in Paris-Deauville! I have the shower body/shampoo gel as well and it is super luxurious! have you tried that one or the other two scent versions?

I’m absolutely in love with your website. Somehow, I was looking for swatches of the new Bobbi Brown foundation for darker skin tones and ended up here.
This is an amazing review! My favorites of the year that held me down include:
1. The TooFaced Born this Way concealer. Kicked Shapetape right in the gut and dethroned her. Its perfect.
2. The TooFaced Born this Way foundation. Initially the brand left some of us hanging with some shades missing then, made up for it by collab’ing with Jackie Aina. Finally got my shade and the formula is perfect for my skin type sis.
3. Universal Fenty gloss bomb. To die for. I buy a new one almost every week because im obsessed!
4. NARS climax mascara. Need i say more?
5. Fragrance. Black Opium by YSL. i get compliments every single time I wear this. Every. Single. Time.
6. Dr. jart ceramidin liquid. Its amazing for my skin type. I have a love/hate relationship with moisturiser because of how humid it is over here but this one is solid.
7. Clinique oil control gel. I haven’t used it as much as it just released but its fast becoming a staple. Hard pressed to find a moisturizer I actually like
8. MAC Bittersweet Me lip glass. Its not a new release but i dont know where it was hiding all my life.
9. Missha sunscreen (with the blue cap) being a black woman its hard to find sunscreen that won’t have you looking crazy turning purple or Casper white
10. AmLactin lotion. All my keratosis pilaris people will get this. Absolutely love!
Skincare products are ones I focussed on in 2018 in addition to some new makeup. I like trying some of Tom Ford new lipsticks as well as NARS audacious lipsticks which have some great new shades. Although I tried some Alpha H products I didn’t find them suitable for me. Dr Nassif (from ‘Blotched’) has a great skincare range and I have enjoyed his eye products, complexion pads and hydration super screen in particular. Hourglass blushes and highlights have been a favourite this year as well as Mally Beauty, in particular, her shadow sticks which are similar to Laura Mercier’s caviar sticks and her primers are probably the best I have used. Algenist has a beautiful serum foundation and I have used a YSL serum foundation before that has really been a wonderful foundation, so I do like this type of formula. As I have naturally curly hair it looks best when it dries naturally but I do need a good serum to add some extra shine each day and I can highly recommend Nick Chavez’s velvet mesquite serum. It is also great for the skin – not greasy at all. Carla Oates, the beauty chef, has wonderful health products and I consumer her beauty body powder (a protein shake) and her other products daily. As I am Australian, I am so proud that Carla Oates has become known internationally and I know her products are sold in New York and other places. For health and wellness, I do recommend her products. Her beauty balm is wonderful as well which can be used on lips, around the eys, cuticles and anywhere one is experiencing dryness. L’Occitane body products have been a favourite such as the oil shower gels and shea butter soaps. Have always been keen on this brand and will try more products in 2019.
As usual, I have many of your favorites…thanks to your reviews! I’d be interested in your reviews of Glossier (their mascara is my holy grail) and Westman Atelier (I have a number ofher products, even though there are not that many yet).

Base- I definitely want to pick up the CT Flawless Filter! And now that as of yesterday the treatment for the illness I’m suffering from was FINALLY approved by the insurance company (we had to fight them for over six months!) I will hopefully be able to do more makeup soon and get the proper use out of my stash! I have Fort de France and have to agree with you on every point, and I’ve been using Hourglass Incandescent Electra since it came out in that first blush trio palette! It’s such a gorgeous shade!
Eyes- I too have been using the same exact L’Oreal mascara for ages. Soft Glam is definitely one I’ve been using loads too!
Lips- That Bite lip mask is something I use pretty much every night, especially in the winter! Fenty and CT lips are also the same shades I’ve been reaching for, and I’m glad you tipped me off on the combo of them too!
Skincare- I finally cracked and bought the full size Water Cream during the Sephora sale (and the Indigo Cream which I’m using currently) and I’m SO glad I did! I haven’t gotten the Farmacy Honey Drop YET but that is one of my go-to brands so I anticipate getting it once the Water Cream runs out

Two of my favorites were also the CT Magic Filter, which i use it as a primer, focusing on the highpoints of my face, and the Nars Orgasm lipbalm.
I really got back into using powder foundation (the loose Chanel Vitalumiere), when I went for foundation my fave was La Mer’s fluid.
Best blush finds were Hourglass’s Mood exposure and Chanel’s Elegance.
Best lipstick find was Bobbi Brown’s crushed lip colour (in so many colours :)).
