Best Beauty Discoveries 2016

Best makeup discoveries in 2016 Tom Ford Chanel Anastasia NARS MAC

I can hardly believe another year has flown by! Thank you to each and every one of you who followed me along on my beauty journey this past year. Today I have a round up of my 2016 favorites in makeup (skincare to follow in a separate post). As a long-time nail polish junkie I was surprised to find this past year was pretty light on the nail polish features and reviews – I remember in past years going through tons of nail wheels and bottles of polish remover. Perhaps by now I simply have collected all the possible colors? 2016’s focus seemed to be all about lips and highlighters for me. As always I’d love to hear what your favorite makeup discoveries were for the year! I picked out items that were new in 2016 (they’re listed in alphabetical order by brand):

Face and Cheeks

  • Chanel Le Vernis in Organdi (review here) was my most-worn color this year
  • Louboutin had the best colors and formulas for me this year, I loved Miss Mars and the Hawaii Kawai Trio minis were so fun to shoot, there were three Red Nail Extensions that I was able to play with back in May to swatch for you, months later I ended up buying Jazzy Doll and Edgypopi

What were your makeup favorites this past year? They can be new launches, rediscoveries or new-to-you products! I love reading about your favorites so please feel free to share in the comments below. Several of you have asked that I bring back the monthly roundups on a regular basis, some have asked for a hits and misses roundup as well. I’ll be starting a monthly review series in the new year!

I started following your blog in 2016 and purchased Bite Amuse Bouche in Honeycomb and Mac Viva Glam Ariana Grande II based on your reviews. Love them both!

Special thanks for introducing me to Bite – made in Toronto.

    Your swatches are the best.

For me the best lip find this year has been the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks especially the comfort matte range, they are so much better than MAC lipsticks and last much longer.

This is another fantastic review — wow!
I have been obsessed lately with Surratt eye shadows and blushes and Kevyn Aucoin eye shadow palettes and celestial powders. The quality is amazing of both lines.

    • Sabrina December 31, 2016 at 12:49 pm

      Ooooh Louisa great picks!!

I really want this Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad, love it!

  • Kate December 29, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Ahhh so many good options!! I am still dying to try the MAC Liptensity Lipsticks. I think two of my favorite launches this year were the ABH Modern Renaissance Palette and the Charlotte Tilbury blushes (First Love is my favorite!)

Hi Kate! The ABH Modern Renaissance palette looks soooo pretty on everyone I see it on!

  • M.Fay December 29, 2016 at 1:21 pm

Love this post and roundup. I think I’ll buy the Chanel lipgloss now, missed that post and it’s a great nude!

Yes, not as many nail polishes this year. I skipped a lot of the Chanel ones – where are the cool shades like in years past?

My favorite makeup find was the Chanel blush in Angelique. I never thought to swatch that one and it looks great on my fair skin.

    • Sabrina December 31, 2016 at 12:48 pm

Hi M.Fay! Thanks for the kind comments – I think the nude gloss is a great one! Good to know I’m not the only one who skipped nails this year! Glad you found a favorite blush this year ๐Ÿ™‚

I really want to try Tom Ford products, they all seem amazing. One of my best discoveries was Charlotte Tilbury – it’s a brand I need to invest more in, everything is lovely!

Hi Julia – I agree Charlotte Tilbury is a lovely brand!

  • Tali May December 29, 2016 at 2:13 pm

Love the hits and misses idea. Also, I was disappointed that the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Surreal Light Palette didn’t work for me as it seems that me and you purchase similar shades in foundation. When I tested the palette the colors barely showed up on my face. :/ I wonder if the brush makes a difference?

    • Sabrina December 31, 2016 at 12:46 pm

Hi Tali May – I use the Hourglass Ambient Surreal palette with a Chanel blush brush. I would say that I am on the slightly lighter side than I normally am. I feel if I were my tan self (NARS St. Moritz or Tom Ford Natural around NC35ish) then this would definitely not show up on me. Right now I’d say I’m more of a MAC NC25 or 30ish. I do think a slightly darker version of the palette would have been a great one for tan or deep skinned beauty lovers. If you layer over a cream blush or creamy type of highlighter the colors show up better when layered.

What a wonderful round-up! Thank you. I like the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo for their soft, easy convenience. Also, the Guerlain holiday meteorites were especially pretty this year. Another love is TF Snowden. I am so excited for your Chanel Spring review.

    • Sabrina December 31, 2016 at 12:43 pm

Thank you Tanja – great picks! Chanel spring review is being worked on right now! I hope to have it up no later than Monday (fingers crossed for some sunny weather for good swatch pictures).

Happy New Year to you too Regina! I think Charlotte Tilbury’s hot lips launch was genius!

I might have missed it listed, but I love the shadow quad on the upper left. What is that? They look too small to be for cheek I think?

    • Sabrina December 31, 2016 at 12:38 pm

Hi! The quad is the Anastasia Glow Kit in Sun Dipped, hth!
