Future M·A·C Review – Mineralize Skinfinish, Mineralize Eye Shadow x4, Lustre Drops, Mineralize Rich Lipstick and Lipglass

MAC launched a new Mineralize Collection called Future M·A·C a few weeks ago. I have a few items I’ve been playing with for a few days now, some are press samples and a couple items I picked up from my local MAC counter. The theme of this collection is light and airy with a glowy futuristic feel. In past years I feel like you could simply blink once and find that almost everything from a MAC collection sold out within seconds or minutes of launching. I’m happy to see that items are still available for a while even if they are limited-edition. Today I’m reviewing some items including:
Up first is the Mineralize Eye Shadow x4 in Nano-Nude. This is my first time trying the Mineralize Eyeshadows so I did not know what to expect. I found all four shades in this palette to be very smooth and natural-looking. They do appear to have a baked formula which in general I’m not a fan of, but I was pleasantly surprised by how soft and smooth these were. The colors overall are on the light side and are sheer-to-medium in pigment. If you are looking for a no-makeup makeup look for the eye this is a good one. If you need color payoff or pigment you will be disappointed. Since I haven’t tried this formula before I don’t know if the color payoff in this one is typical or on the sheer side.

Next up are three lip items. I’ve never tried a Mineralize Rich Lipstick before on the lips although I’ve swatched them on my hand in store before. Cybernaut is a pale pink that does not work my natural lip tone. It’s such a gorgeous soft pink in the tube but I can’t wear these kinds of colors without looking washed out. Texture is smooth and it felt slightly hydrating on the lips.
For the Mineralize Lipglass I’ve tried a couple non-shimmer shades before. I like the formula for a very lush-looking high shine with a cushiony feel. The ones I have are medium-to-sheer but I found the two I tried from Future MAC extra sheer. The Zone is the prettiest nude-rose-taupe shimmer, on the lips it’s sheer to medium in coverage that gives the lips a pretty your-lips-but-better kind of look. If you know of a lipstick this color please let me know because I think it would be amazing. Telegenius is sheer on my lips. It’s a pretty iridescent pinky peach in the tube but only looks like transparent shine on my lips. I personally wish it had better color payoff – but that being said it can make a great layering gloss and I really like how smooth and lush it makes the lips look without feeling tacky.

The last bits of this review focus on three face/cheek products. I’m a huge fan of Mineralize Skinfinishes in general. Warm Rose is quite different from any other MSF I’ve tried. It’s got a very powdery texture with a lot of kick-off powder. Finish is not as shimmery as most that I’ve tried, on me it worked as an all over setting powder for a soft translucent finish. It works right now but I suspect if I get any darker it won’t work all over the face. There is a tiny bit of shimmer in the powder but it’s not visible on the face (at least on me).

Otherearthly is all kinds of gorgeous. If you splurge on one thing from the collection try this one. It has mix of three colors including a peachy copper champagne, a shimmering pink and cool silver. I found the colors have enough separation to be able to dip a large eyeshadow brush into each section to apply separately. When swirled together with a duo fibre brush or blush brush the result is a really pretty glowy champagne peach with silver pearl mixed in. It gives a wonderful glow that isn’t overly shimmery or frosty.

The Barbados Girl Lustre Drops is something that has been on my radar for quite some time. It’s been launched with previous collections as a limited-edition item and this is the first time I’ve been able to play with it (it sold out in previous launches). It’s a shimmering golden peach tan with gold/silvery flecks. This one gives the skin a slight tint of color but I mostly see shimmer on the skin. If you’re a fan of the color but don’t want sparkle flecks, I recommend opting for Tom Ford Fire Lust instead.

Out of everything I tested I think the best items include the Mineralize Skinfinish in Otherearthly and Mineralize Lipglass in The Zone. The other items performed well in terms of quality and texture – the colors just aren’t really suited to my personal taste. I was really interested in the two Mineralize Blushes with this collection in Cosmic Force and Raybeam – I played with them at the counter and although they are really pretty, I felt they would be too light for my skintone right now.

Most of the items in the Future M·A·C are limited-edition (at least the items shown in this review) so if you have anything on your list I recommend checking the items out sooner than later. You can find them at all MAC counters right now. Online at MAC, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick

Earlier this year YSL launched a new lipstick called Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick ($37 each for 4 ml/4.5 g, made in France). These were initially launched as a Nordstrom exclusive (where I ordered mine) for early release but are now available at all retailers. At this time I’m not sure if these are a new formula in the Rouge Volupté line – some retailers list the Oil-In-Stick product in a separate SKU while others have grouped it with the Rouge Volupté Shines. Either way the formula of the Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick is very smooth and hydrating and has the same amount of pigment and shine as the Rouge Volupté Shines. On my lips they appear to perform exactly the same way. According to YSL these are described as a “revolutionary lipstick that provides luscious color and luminous shine while actually conditioning lips … made with 65% oils, the deeply hydrating texture instantly melts into lips providing a pop of color, instant hydration, and all day comfort.” With regular use lips are supposed to see visible improvement in overall look for a more healthy appearance and nourished feel. They have that signature YSL mango scent. With all the opaque lipstick formulas and liquid lipsticks that have launched recently – many of you have commented that you find brands launch formulas that are too thick or matte for your preference. If that is the case, I think you’ll find the YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick fits the bill for the sheer to medium glossy shiny finish lip color that is an effortless kind of product.

 

There are eight shades that I picked up. When I bought mine I ordered them sight unseen. I will say that the online swatches were hit or miss. Some were completely different from what I envisioned but luckily all of them are very wearable. Out of all the sheer glossy lipstick formulas my top two favorites are the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines and YSL Rouge Volupté Shines. The new Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Sticks are super hydrating and add a lush coat of moisture on the lips while adding a nice tint of color. They have noticeable coverage even though the pigment is sheerer than an opaque formula. You can layer for more color but at the end of the day they are still a medium-sheer coverage lipstick. If you like the moisturizing feel, shine and color but want more pigment and coverage I highly recommend you check out the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylos instead (all swatched here).

 

The colors and descriptions, all of these have some shimmer in the tube but on the lips (with the exception of the white one) there is no visible shimmer or frost, just a healthy shine:
  • 41 Corail À Porter is a medium bright pink with a bit of coral
  • 42 Baume Midi Minuit is a sheer sparkling white that adds a pale sheen to the lips
  • 43 Rose Rive Gauche is a peachy rose
  • 44 Nude Lavalliere is a light nude pink
  • 47 Beige Blouse is a perfect medium nude pink with a slight hint of warmth
  • 48 Smoking Plum is the prettiest plum that has some brightness to it
  • 51 Rose Saharienne is a cool-toned baby pink
  • 52 Trapeze Pink is a medium cool-toned pink
All apply smoothly on the lips with the exception of 51 Rose Saharienne which was a bit streaky on my lips mainly because the cool and light tones contrast with my natural lip tone. It was easy to blend and smooth but straight from the tube it was a tiny bit streaky.

Swatch comparisons to some other Rouge Volupté Shines that I own shown below. For me shades 7, 8 and 9 have been classic everyday staples that are super easy to wear. Compared to the new options Nude Lavalliere 44 is a light nude pink on my lips while Beige Blouse 47 is a bit deeper but not quite as peach as Nude in Private 9. Beige Blouse 47 looks almost identical to Rose in Wood 23 – I would say that No. 23 is a more more rose/pink in color.

 

 

One last look:

 

I took a quick peek in store at all the shades of the Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick in store recently and if they are indeed the same as the Rouge Volupté Shines I think that YSL did a nice job expanding the color range. As mentioned at the top I don’t know if the formulas are the same or if the newer shades have a new and improved formula. On my lips I didn’t notice any difference – they have the same texture, scent, finish, shine and hydrating feel. Lasting power is average for a semi-sheer glossy lipstick but this one is a lipstick formula that I don’t mind reapplying 3+ times in a given day. I love the other YSL lipstick formulas and this one is no exception. It performs well and the colors are easy to wear for any occasion. I can’t pick a favorite. I still think 7, 8 and 9 are my absolute favorites, but in the new range I’m smitten with 44 and 48.If you like sheer to medium lipsticks with shine I think you’ll like these. They have similar pigment and texture compared to the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines. As mentioned above if you want more pigment and coverage I highly recommend you check out the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylos instead (all swatched here). If you want something more opaque but with a moisturizing feel I recommend the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipsticks (swatched + reviewed here).

Tom Ford Soleil Collection – Moisturecore Lip Colors

There are six shades of Moisturecore Lip Color ($55 each) from the Tom Ford Soleil Collection this summer. These come in luminous glowing fresh colors perfect for spring to summer – but really you can wear these year round. These are described as:

Two exclusive formulas in one innovative lip product. In the center, a liquid core infused with passion fruit oil provides luxurious moisture in a pink pop of color throughout every Moisturecore Lip Color shade. A luminous lip color encases the core, infused with an exotic blend of melon fruit extract, murumuru butter and plant derived esters that conditions lips. Sprinkled with subtle gold pearl to complement bronzed, summer skin. Shades, ranging from sandy nude to rosy mauve, provide a soft veil of lightweight, long-lasting color.

The center of each lip color is identical which is a sheer melon pink color that blends seamlessly with the outer colors of each tube. The packaging is the same size as the Lip Color Shines – they come in a slim twist up tube but with this season’s white and gold packaging. Since the formula has the word “moisture” in the name I expected an ultra hydrating lip color – they do have a moist slightly glossy finish with a cushiony lush feeling but I didn’t find them as moisturizing as a traditional lip treatment. I actually feel the Ultra-Rich Lip Colors are more hydrating on my lips.

Pigment is medium but buildable. They covered the lip entirely with the exception of Scandola and Otranto which I found a bit sheerer. You’ll see in the lip swatches below that the colors do show up but there is a slight transparent quality in the shimmer which makes my natural lip color show through a bit. There is a slight vanilla scent but it’s very subtle and disappears after a few  minutes.

At first swipe some of these colors felt on the dry side. The colors do all get better after the initial top layer of the lipstick is worn down and after the first swipe I had no issues with any of them. They all had very good smooth application without any streaks or patches. Lasting power is medium with these. As with any lipstick that has a shine finish they usually don’t last as long as a matte or long-wear lipstick but the Moisturecore Lip Colors still last a relatively long time. They don’t disappear immediately like some other sheers do, by comparison I find they last longer than Rouge Dior Baumes but not quite as long as the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylos. By comparison to other Tom Ford formulas, the Moisturecore Lip Colors last longer than the Lip Color Shines but not quite as long as the regular Lip Colors.

The colors are all on point for neutral lip lovers who want something that isn’t a beige nude. The only color I feel slightly off about is Cala di Volpe – it’s such a pretty copper in the tube but on my lips it turns almost orangey. Color descriptions, close ups and swatches:

I give all of the colors a thumbs up – they are really pretty wearable colors. If I had to skip any, I would say Scandola and Carriacou are similar on my lips but do note I have pigmented lips so Scandola will most likely show up more close to the arm swatch on you. Cala di Volpe is not something I would wear a lot right now – in the lip swatch it may be hard to tell but it pulls orangey against my complexion right now. It will probably be better for me when I have more of a tan. The others are all winners.

Formula-wise I don’t know that I would say the moisture core has enough noticeable benefits to justify the higher price tag (they are priced slightly higher than the other Tom Ford lipsticks). Still for me the price is not a deal breaker as I think the quality is there and formula is very good. Colors are all up my alley and ones I can see myself wearing everyday for either day or night. If you’re wondering whether I prefer the Moisturecore or the Ultra-Rich formulas (both new for summer), I will say I like the Ultra-Rich formula better but the Moisturecore range has colors that are more of what I am comfortable wearing.

Tom Ford Soleil Collection – Ultra-Rich Lip Color

One of the new lip color formulas this summer in the Tom Ford Soleil Collection is called the Ultra-Rich Lip Color ($52 each). These are packaged in the white and gold tubes with a similar lipstick shape to the Lip Color Sheers but the Ultra-Rich Lip Color formula this summer is more creamy with fuller coverage and more of a moisturizing feel.

 

These are described as, “A vivid and high-shine lip color that moisturizes lips instantly. Over time, lips appear smoother, softer and suppler. This luminous and vivid lip color collection lasts up to 6 hours.”

 

After playing with 4 of the 6 shades over the past week I have found they do indeed offer instant moisture to the lips. On my lips they feel like a hybrid between the regular Lip Color and Lip Color Sheers with a smooth and creamy feel. Coverage is very impressive – it’s basically flawless with medium to full coverage that is easy to build without looking or feeling heavy. Lasting power is very good – I didn’t test for up to 6 hours per the description but the colors lasted for 4 hours without fading or budging.

  • Le Mepris (my press sample says Le Mepris but online it’s labeled Les Mepris) is a bright reddish coral color. I’m normally drawn to neutrals but this one stands out as a knock out summery coral red. It has the perfect mix of red in it so brightens the complexion without looking garish.
  • Revolve Around Me is one of the most perfect flawless nudes I’ve ever tried. As many of you know I love nudes but because I have pigmented lips so many look like concealer on my lips or look patchy. Revolve Around Me has amazing full coverage on my lips and covers the surface with a smooth veil of color. It’s clearly a beige nude on me but has enough color that it does not wash out my lips like Nude Vanille, Blush Nude or the SS16 Lip Shine.
  • Temptation Waits is a medium brown cafe shade. My press sample was labeled Sex Oyster. I confirmed with the Tom Ford team that they changed the name to Temptation Waits so if you see that around on other blogs or websites know they are the same shade, the actual name is Temptation Waits. This one has a semi-sheer to medium finish but you can swipe and build for full coverage. It has a tiny bit of rose in it so it’s not a pure brown.
  • Solar Affair is a peachy coral. I thought this one would be my favorite since I’m drawn to coral shades. The color has a bit too much warmth and orange so when combined with my olive skin it makes my skin look more yellow, almost sallow. It’s a lovely color – when I compared Solar Affair next to Le Mepris, the red one won me over.

The formula is a winner in my book. I didn’t think they could make a better lip color formula, but these new Ultra-Rich Lip Colors far surpass the regular Lip Color formula because it has a softer slightly more creamy feel which makes them glide easily on the lips. The Ultra-Rich Lip Colors do have a bit of shine to them which makes them look a bit less opaque than the regular Lip Colors. I think the formula is definitely worth checking out this summer.

 

You can find the Ultra-Rich Lip Colors at all Tom Ford Counters now for $52 each. My top 2 favorite shades include Le Mepris and Revolve Around Me. I haven’t checked out the other shades yet (there are 6 total), but right now I have plenty to play with.

Tom Ford Beauty Soleil Color Collection for Summer 2016 – Sneak Peek + Swatches

Tom Ford just launched their summer beauty items in the Soleil Color Collection and it’s absolutely breathtaking. Everything is cased in the white and gold packaging for this season with new formulas for lips and beautiful items for the skin and cheeks. I have a quick sneak peek and wanted to list all the items that are available for reference. I received some press samples and purchased additional items to review which made a serious dent in my bank account but I don’t mind one bit because everything is gorgeous. Personal first impressions are all very good. Some items that were limited-edition in previous seasons have been repromoted this season such as the Cream and Powder Eye Duos, Pink Sand Cream Blush and Firelust Skin Illuminator. Also on a great note is that Tom Ford Beauty has now launched online at Sephora (yay!). The items in this year’s Soleil Color Collection:
Also not part of the color collection, but the Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum and Shimmering Body Oil (previously reviewed here with other spring launches) have launched at all retailers (it was an early exclusive to Neiman Marcus for a while). Several of you have asked if this year’s oil is the same as last year’s – it unfortunately is not and I find this year’s version a bit sticky/tacky. I personally would recommend you skip the oil.

MAC So Select Matte Lipstick

I’ve been a long-time fan of MAC lipsticks – I still remember the first ones I bought when I was in high school. I had saved up for what seemed like forever to buy a few including Pink Glaze, Wuss and “O” (two of which I think are discontinued now). Many of the formulas are drying for my lips but the colors are so good I just can’t ever resist them. MAC just launched a new program called MAC Select which is exclusive to maccosmetics.com and MAC owned/operated stores. It’s a loyalty program where you receive a unique member ID number that allows you access to certain exclusives, early access and more options for tracking your Back to MAC items. All the details on the program tiers here and FAQs answered here – you can register online (that’s how I signed up) or in MAC stores. To celebrate this launch MAC released a new matte lipstick called So Select ($17 for 3g) which is described as a dirty rose. You have to be a member to be able to purchase it. I have a love/hate relationship with some of the MAC neutrals. Some look so so good swatched on the hand but then on my lips the color looks like death (ie Twig, Spirit, Whirl). Still there are tons of neutral options in almost every imaginable undertone so you’re bound to find one that works.

So Select is indeed a dirty rose color. It’s a neutral that has a slightly deep undertone. It’s exactly what I hoped Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita would look like on me (which is a bit too dark for my personal taste). I’ve pulled a few other shades to compare it to for reference since with MAC neutrals on a computer screen and also in person, sometimes they can all look the same in the tubes. I’ve found myself really loving So Select – it’s got some brown undertones but not too much that it looks like death, there’s enough rose and pink that gives it a bit of life. I’m thrilled So Select is a neutral rose-pink-brown that works for my complexion. It’s dark enough on my skin that it’s not quite neutral, but it’s still light enough in color that it doesn’t look too vampy on my lips. As with other MAC Mattes, it has full coverage. If my lips are on the dry side, I do like to prep the lips with the MAC Prep + Prime first.
The MAC Select Program applies online and also in MAC stores but I haven’t checked to see if they carry this one (I usually buy MAC products online directly from their website or shop in store at Nordstrom) – if you’ve spotted this in store let me know in the comments.

Surratt Beauty Prismatique Lips – Nouveau Riche, Jolie Laide, Chichi, Pailettes and Lili Dorée

The Surratt Beauty Prismatique Lips launched sometime last fall ($36 each for 2.36ml/ 0.08oz.) and I picked up a few shades to try out. I’ve been a huge fan of his Lipsliques and Lip Lustres (Hevyn, Soigne and Gamine swatched here) – they are colors I’ve used up entirely but haven’t repurchased due to the steep price points but I do love the formulas. The quality is excellent with good smooth coverage and a voluptuous soft feel. The Prismatique Lips are sparkly lip sheers that contain Japanese reflective pigments for brilliant shine. Even though they are sparkly, the shimmer is done in a refined way to add the prettiest glimmer to the lips without feeling chunky or overly glittery. I have five shades that I purchased, although in playing with the formula, I have all the shades on my wishlist. The colors are sheer but work well with your natural lip tone to give a youthful glowing look to the lips. The Prismatique Lips come in a slim duochrome shimmering tube. It flashes green or purple depending on the light. These are extremely small in size so I do believe the price per oz is on the steep side.

These apply similar to the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines in the sense they are no fuss kinds of colors. They have a sheer transparent quality and on the arms they swatch sheer but the color adheres better once on the lips and gives a healthy glow. The texture is smooth and nourishing. Lasting power is like any glossy finish lipstick. The Surratt Prismatique Lips last a decent amount of time on the lips. They won’t disappear or slide off within a few hours, but lasting power won’t be as long as a full coverage lipstick.

Bottom line all winners for my neutral lip loving self. These give the lips the prettiest wash of shimmer that I’ve seen. I’m all for shimmering lips but I do tend to avoid glitters. The sparkles are beautiful in these and are visible but not over the top. If I had to pick one favorite it would be Chichi. Given the way these have sheer coverage I suspect some of the brighter color options would also look gorgeous on the lips with the bright but sheer finish they have. For the amount of product you get in all the Surratt Beauty items I do think the prices are extremely high, but the quality is there and I haven’t regretted anything I’ve splurged on from the line. As far as I can tell there’s no detectable scent in the lipsticks.
