Best Holiday Candles + Scents For the Home This Season

December 14, 2020

Best Luxury Christmas Candles Byredo, Diptyque, Cire Trudon | The Beauty Lookbook

I’m wrapping up my holiday gift guides with a few more roundups! Today I’m sharing my favorite luxury candles for the holidays. If you’re looking to splurge on something nice for the home or as a gift here are my favorites.

Best Holiday Candles Diptyque, Byredo, Maison Francis Kurkdjian | The Beauty Lookbook

DIPTYQUE

Diptyque Best of Baies Set | The Beauty Look book

Baies is my favorite of all the Diptyque scents, it’s great for holiday because it’s a unique mix of roses and blackcurrant. It’s a green and berry mix which I think is interesting and perfect year round. I’ve bought this in multiple sizes and adore the Baies Room Spray. Available in multiple sizes. In case you are not a fan of blackcurrant or rose, I’ve included a few others.

Best Diptyque Candles for Christmas Amber, Santal, Vanille, Feu de Bois

Vanille is a unique vanilla in the sense that it’s a smoky leathery one with a hint of spice. It’s not sweet like other vanilla candles.

Ambre is one of the prettiest holiday scents to me. It’s a warm mix of amber and musk giving it a cozy feel.

Feu de Bois is the best firewood scent in candle form. It has a smoky earthy kind of wood smell.

Santal is one of the softest sandalwood scents I’ve tried. Sometimes sandalwood can be a bit strong in other candles, this has good throw but has a well-rounded feel. It has a bit of a velvety feel to it.

A few other fun things to check out:

BYREDO

Byredo Tree House Room Spray Mini Bibliothque Candle | The Beauty Lookbook

Tree House is one of my favorite woodsy kind of candles, this year I opted to buy the Tree House Room Spray and am so impressed. It has the longest lasting power of all the room sprays I’ve tried. It smells just like the candle and is quite potent. It has a mix of pimento, bamboo, cedarwood, guaiac wood, sandalwood and leather. The Room Spray comes at quite a steep price but it is cased in a large glass spray bottle and I feel it will last a long time.

Bibliotheque is one of my favorites for the holiday, it has a really unique mix, almost like a more intense less sweet version of their Bal D’Afrique perfume. Bibliotheque notes are peach, plum, peony, violet, leather patchouli and vanilla. It is available in the standard 8.5 oz size and also in the mini 2.5 oz (shown here). Minis are harder to find sometimes as they sell out, but you can find them at Byredo, Violet Grey, Lucky Scent, Space NK.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Candle

The Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Candle was a gift from my bestie and it is AMAZING! I just bought the perfume and fell in love with it. The candle smells exactly like the perfume – woody, amber, floral and sweet with extremely good throw. It is quite a splurge but I would not hesitate to buy on my own. She bought it from Saks.

CIRE TRUDON

Cire Trudon Ernesto Candles | The Beauty Lookbook

There are so many things I want to try from Cire Trudon but I keep going back to my one favorite, Ernesto. Cire Trudon makes the best of the best in terms of how elegant and unique their candles are. They have the strongest throw out of the ones I have tried. I fell in love with Ernesto thanks to one of my readers who kept nudging me to try (she even offered to buy me one if I didn’t order one lol!). I eventually splurged and have never looked back. This year they launched Ernesto in a beautiful Alabaster vessel with a lid. It’s truly glorious. I ordered it over Cyber Week for some savings. It is like a beautiful work of art.

For Christmas, I have also tried Gabriel, Nazareth and Fir – all are truly lovely for the holiday season.

Cute Budget Beauty Holiday Gift Ideas

Best Budget Beauty Gift Ideas | The Beauty Look Book

So many of you have asked for more budget beauty features and I’m thrilled to share a Budget Beauty Gift Guide with some cute stocking stuffer ideas! I’m partnering with Walmart to share some of my latest finds. I have a roundup of some new discoveries along with a couple tried and true favorites.

My Favorite Lash Duo

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara and Primer Holiday Kit

The L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara has been my favorite for several years. I love both the regular and waterproof version. They have a cute Lash Paradise Mascara and Primer Holiday Kit at a value price. I use the primer almost daily (it’s one of the few mascara bases I really like and have repurchased countless times).

Best Plumping Lip Gloss

Maybelline Lifter Lip Gloss Review and Swatches

The Maybelline Lifter Glosses are my latest budget beauty discovery. I love the sleek simple packaging and these are some of the prettiest plumping lip glosses I’ve tried. They have a sweet cookie like scent and give the lips a plumping look and feel without an intense sting (they will tingle a little). They have Hyaluronic Acid and make the lips look super glossy. I cannot pick a favorite! I’m wearing Moon in this post which is a sheer smooth shimmery pink. There are some cream colors without shimmer too. A few more swatches below.

Best Bronzers

L'Oreal Bronzing Powders

L'Oreal Bronzing Powder Amalfi Medium

The best budget-friendly bronzers I’ve tried are from L’Oreal. I love the Summer Belle Bronze Please! in the shade Amalfi (Medium). I recently bought the darkest color in Taormina (Dark) which is a good non-orangey deeper bronze. If you want a softer look the True Match Lumi Bronzers are also nice for a luminous glow.

Favorite Affordable Brushes + Tools

Best Affordable Makeup Brushes Real Techniques

So many friends and family members ask what the best affordable makeup brushes are. Many of them have teens or younger ones just starting to get into makeup and want to know what a good brush set is to start. Real Techniques Brushes are my favorite. They’re well made and functional. They have several cute sets or you can buy them individually. Sometime last year I discovered the Everyday Essentials Makeup Brush Set and use all the brushes in the kit. Brush 200 is perfect for foundation, 401 is a great multi-tasking brush and I love the other two for highlighting or blending.

I just bought the Artist Essentials Brush Set (one featured in this post) and think it’s a great addition to my current lineup. They’re soft and gentle on the skin but effective in picking up product. I also picked up another Concealer Brush because it’s one of the best I have tried and super versatile for both concealer or cream eyeshadow.

For beauty sponges the Elf Blending Sponge is hands down the best drugstore sponge I’ve tried!

Best Drugstore Beauty Tools Elf and Real Techniques

Cute Stocking Stuffers

Elf Bite Size Palettes

Elf Bite Size Palettes make for super cute stocking stuffers! I think they’re super cute – the Bite Size Eyeshadow Palettes have 4 shades for a complete look and I bought a few extras to keep for myself. The Bite Size Face Duos have a mini blush and highlighter in the same size compact in easy to wear colors.

Best Nail Care Picks

Best Budget Beauty Gift Ideas

Cute Nail Gift Ideas Tweezerman OPI

For nail care Tweezerman makes the some of the best nail tools. I swear by their Pushy Nail Cleaner to push back cuticles and also their Cuticle Clippers. This Mini Manicure Kit is a great buy – they have a few variations and I think they’re one of the most underrated accessories.

OPI nail polishes are perfect for any beauty lover. Out of all the gifts I’ve given, any OPI nail polish seems to get more excitement than anything else! I’ll sometimes put together a mini nail kit basket or tie a couple up in a cello bag for gifting. A few of my favorite neutrals swatched below.

L’Occitane makes some of the best hand creams and their Intensive Hand Balm is available in a mini size now! There are also lots of cute boxed sets which make for easy effortless stocking stuffers. A cute Silk Mittens Hand Trio popped up online for MAC and I am ordering this today!

There are lots of cute mini makeup palettes available at Sephora, Ulta and Walmart. I’ve heard great things about the Lawless Eyeshadow Minis so I plan on ordering a couple to try. You can find affordable minis from Tarte, Too Faced, Elf and more (linked below in the carousel).

Molton Brown has some of the most exquisite scents and gift sets. I love their Holiday Shower Gel Baubles ($15 each, available in a few scents) and Holiday Crackers ($25 each with 4 shower gels). This Mini Hand Wash and Hand Lotion Set is also a good one!

Another great brand to look for skincare sets is Fresh. I am 100% obsessed with their lip balms and love that they have different variations at different price points. I linked the ones Under $25 in this post but they have a wide range of sets to choose from.

The BEST shower creams are from Sol de Janeiro. The Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel is available in a mini in their Carnival Flight Set. There is also another variation in their Coco Cabana Jet Set which I also love. I think these are a good deal ($33 value for $25 each) and an easy win for anyone!

I’m kicking off the holiday season with my first Holiday Gift Guide! Today’s edit has a roundup of cozy gifts for the home. I’ve included a lot of my personal favorites to put on your radar. There are a few things I’ve bookmarked myself to keep an eye out for sales.

A cozy blanket or cashmere scarf are two things you can’t go wrong with (no matter how picky the person is!). Long time readers know I LIVE for our Barefoot Dreams. These are blankets we use all the time and I’m 100% obsessed. We love the classic CozyChic Throw Blanket the best for the softest option. I also really love the In the Wild Prints. I have the Everlane Cashmere Rib Beanie, Scarf and Throw on my radar for the season. I linked a few more cute options below!

Fuzzy slippers are on my wishlist this year. I have so many on my radar and bookmarked a ton of cute ones to keep an eye out for sales. I already ordered these mule slippers from Naked Cashmere and these from Sherpa Scuff ones from Madewell so far. I am hoping the others will be on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday – although I have to admit they are already in my online shopping carts. If you have tried any or have favorites please let me know in the comments.

The best cozy scents I’ve tried are Diptyque Santal or Le Labo Santal. I also think Byredo Bibliotheque is one of the most unique warm cozy scents I’ve ever smelled – it makes the prettiest luxe gift. For those who prefer room sprays both Andrew and I love the ones from Diptyque for the strongest throw. They come in a few variations and every single one is amazing. This year they launched a Best of Baies Trio set that has a mini Baies room spray.

For coffee lovers I have done a few highlights on my Instagram Stories (also saved in my Highlights under HOME if you want to see some demos). I’ve had the Nespresso Pixie from the day it launched and loved it for YEARS! A few years ago I stopped drinking espresso because it was too strong for me but I recently bought the Vertuo Next because it makes BOTH coffee and espresso. I 100% recommend it! Stores like Bloomingdale’s, Williams-Sonoma and even the Nespresso website have incredible deals during the holidays – this is the best time to buy one! (Currently on sale online at 30% off at the Nespresso website!).

A few other favorites I have include the Slip Silk hair ties, love the cute holiday set. They won’t pull or snag the hair. I also think Aesop makes lovely cozy home sets. I love their Resurrection Hand Wash Duo. I think The Seasoned Wayfarer Set is a really nice one to give as a gift. We’ve tried everything in the set which has a full size hand wash, mini room spray and deodorizing toilet drops (they work!).

Favorite Fancy Candles for the Holidays

December 18, 2019

Best Fancy Candles from Diptyque, Cire Trudon and Byredo

There’s nothing quite like a good bougie candle to make your home feel extra fancy, warm and cozy all at the same time. By popular request I have an updated favorites roundup for the holiday season! My tried and true favorites remain the same with my top three favorite brands being Diptyque, Byredo and Cire Trudon. Many of these I started burning in late fall and will continue using many of these through early spring.

Diptyque

Best Diptyque Candles

1. Diptyque Baies is in my top three favorites and this one is my most burned, repurchased and recommended candle ever! It has notes of rose and blackcurrant, it smells like berries and rose to me. I’ve bought this in almost all the different sizes. If you are new to Diptyque this is the one I recommend to everyone.

2. Diptyque Feu de Bois is one of the best firewood smokey scents. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it always feels like Christmas to me! It smells warm and cozy.

3. Diptyque Vanille is a smokey vanilla. It’s not your typical sweet gourmand vanilla. It’s almost like a leather smokey kind of vanilla that has a warm vibe.

4. Diptyque Ambre is my favorite amber scent. It has the perfect mix of wood, vetiver and patchouli with a hint of spice. It’s another warm one – I bought the large colored glass version a few years ago and found it a lot more potent than the standard size (which is still very good).

5. Diptyque Santal is the best sandalwood candle. It’s not too strong or spicy and is perfect year round.

I bought the Mini Carousel Set and standard size Lucky Charm carousels last year and love them! They usually have them out only during the holiday season. Both are still available right now at Nordstrom.

Cire Trudon

Cire Trudon Christmas

6. Cire Trudon Ernesto is the best candle of all time to me. It’s a magical mix of leather and tobacco – but I find it hard to describe. I have yet to try all the Cire Trudon candles (I have also tried minis of Positano and Rose Poivree which were lovely!). They’re the most expensive candle splurge I’ve made for the home in past years. Every Christmas they launch special edition packaging for a selection of scents. The Cire Trudon team was generous enough to send this year’s for review and it’s GLORIOUS! I have the Classic size but it also comes in two larger options.

7 / 8 / 9 Cire Trudon Gabriel, Nazareth and Fir have been on my radar for years but every time I’ve decided to buy one I always go back to Ernesto. They have a beautiful Odeurs D’Hiver Christmas Trio which is boxed in the most beautiful packaging I have ever seen. Every candle in the box is carefully packed with inserts around the edges and also in the top to protect the wick/wax. Gabriel is glorious mix of leather, chestnut and wood. Nazareth is a mix of clove, oranges and cinnamon (smells like Christmas!). I’ve always been more of a pine lover for Christmas scents but Cire Trudon Fir is so unique and sweet while still being very green.

Byredo

Best Byredo Candles

10. Byredo Tree House is my favorite one from the line. When I first smelled it years ago I actually did not like the way it smelled straight out of the jar. It wasn’t until I smelled it burning in their New York store that I decided to give it a try. It has the most amazing mix of cedar, bamboo, sandalwood, guaiac wood, hay, spice, myrrh and labdanum. It’s warm and cozy with wood and spice mix.

11. Byredo Bibliotheque is almost like a smoky candle version of Bal D’Afrique perfume to me. It’s not as sweet but to me it has a similar vibe that is so unique and unlike anything else I’ve tried. Even the little one has amazing throw.

Room Sprays

Aesop Room Spray Trio Set

12. Aesop Room Sprays – For those who cannot burn candles room sprays are a great alternative. I’m completely obsessed with all the Aesop Room Sprays and was thrilled to find they launched a mini trio this holiday! I’ve also loved Diptyque Baies and 34 Boulevard St. Germain sprays as well for our home. I’ve been dying to try one from Byredo but haven’t yet.

Holiday Gift Guide: Luxury Splurges to Treat Yourself

December 16, 2019

Holiday Gift Guide Treat Yourself

1 body oil / 2 hand cream / 3 hand cream / 4 glow balm / 5 face palette / 6 sheet mask  / 7 eye cream / 8 sheet mask skin set / 9 beige sunnies / 10 comfy sneakers / 11 liquid liner / 12 mini crossbody / 13 hand wash / 14 card case / 15 lip glow / 16 celine / 17 face mask minis / 18 lip balm / 19 lip balm / 20 crossbody

Today I have a holiday gift guide featuring luxury splurges to treat a loved one or yourself! This one has a mix of different things I’ve loved this year. I have some accessory and fashion finds included.

The Chanel Fresh Body Cream has been a staple for me for years so when they launched a Gentle Oil Huile Douce* version I could not be more thrilled. It’s a gentle lightweight oil with a super light fresh scent to it and I’m 100% obsessed. It leaves the body smooth, hydrated and very soft. Their Hand Creams have also been a huge obsession of mine since they launch and I’ve collected every formula. I love the regular La Creme Main because it dries down to a velvety finish. This year they added the Le Lift La Creme Main and I find it is a lot more hydrating.

If you treat yourself to a lip balm, the best of the best is By Terry’s Baume de Rose. I love both the original Baume de Rose (pot version) and the stick + applicator option. I always keep one in my purse these days. It is heavily scented with a rose fragrance but it’s a nice one in my opinion! Other loves include the NARS Afterglow Lip Balm and of course Dior Addict Lip Glow. I’m so bummed that Bite is reformulating their Agave Lip Masks – but I have high hopes the new formula is going to be just as good.

For fashion finds I found mini bags were the way to go for me this year. I fell in love with the Tory Burch Perry Bombe Bag that Andrew bought for me for my birthday. It’s reviewed here and worn here. It’s quite tiny but I have 2 colors and use them all the time. I later bought the Gemini Link Mini version which has a bigger opening and I also loved that one all summer/fall. Since going with smaller bags I found I had to buy a smaller wallet. I had sold most of my bags and accessories in a few blog sales to make room for new things and realized I no longer had any card cases. I love the Gucci Card Case (I actually had it in a different pattern before) – it works for everything I need!

The sunglasses I get asked about the most are my Celine Round Sunglasses (worn here) and my brown or beige Raybans (brown ones worn here). I love them both. For me Rayban is a great line – I love the round style in the havana brown and dark brown too. Quality is great and they stay on the nose better than a lot of other brands for me.

The best sheet masks I’ve had in rotation this year are from 111Skin. If I had to use 2 sheet masks the rest of my life it would be the 111Skin Bio Cellulose or the Rose Gold Brightening. I scored a few of the sets on Black Friday for a killer deal. I would still pay full price to replenish. You can buy individual sheets if you don’t want to commit to the full box set. The Subzero De-Puffing Eye Mask is among my favorites for the under eye area. I’m contemplating the Energizing Bag Set for myself.

For a great mask set, I love this one from Fresh Beauty.

If you’ve had your eye on the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette Ghost Unlocked version I suggest you act fast. It’s sold out nearly everywhere but I was able to order it from Beautylish and it has also restocked at Hourglass. My review of last year’s Unlocked which looks the same as Ghost Unlocked here.

Last but not least I’ve fallen in love with APL and if you want to truly treat yourself I think these are 100% worth splurge. I’ve tried a few styles now and like the Techloom Breeze and Techloom Pro the best. I also love their Slides for wearing around the house or to the beach. I ordered some for Andrew and he’s even hooked! If you use this referral link you can save $20 off a purchase of $140 or more.

I’m doing another giveaway! One person will be selected via the widget below to win:

Away Mini Pink Suitcase (note this is a backup I have from last year’s variation) filled with minis including the Laura Mercier Glow Set, Laura Mercier Red Velvet Lip Liner, Glossier Balm dot Com Berry, Glossier Pro Tip Liner, NARS Rita Lipstick, NARS Mini Balm Duo, By Terry Mini Baume de Rose, By Terry Mini Rose Hand Cream, 1 Joanna Vargas Sheet Mask, Mini Bum Bum Cream.

Open internationally but you must be 18 years or older to qualify. To enter simply use the widget and complete at least 1 of the steps. The more steps you complete the more entries you receive. Will run through 12/18/2019 and ends 11:45 PM EST. I’ll select a winner within 24 hours and email them. Winner must respond within 24 hours or another winner will be selected in their place. Prizes ship within 1 week. Not sponsored or affiliated.
