Tom Ford Beauty Winter Soleil Eye and Cheek Palettes and Lip Foil Picks – Holiday 2016

Tom Ford Winter Soleil 2016 - The Beauty Look Book

The Tom Ford Beauty Winter Soleil collection has been on my radar for weeks now and I finally caved and splurged on the Soleil Eye and Cheek Palettes in Warm and Cool ($155 each for 0.45 oz / 12.8 g) and four of the Lip Foils ($53 each for 0.1 oz / 3 g). I’m getting this post up quickly for those who are Sephora VIBs in case you want swatches to help you decide on purchasing decisions for the sale so I haven’t been able to do extensive testing. This is going to be more of a first impressions post but having used Tom Ford beauty products for years I can pretty much tell how they will perform right away. Everything is cased in the white and gold packaging with a glowy shimmery feel for holiday.

Up first are the Lip Foils which are ultra shimmery lipsticks. They have ultra fine mica to give them a reflective look and feel making them almost like foil. If you don’t like frost I’d recommend you try to see if you can swatch before buying sight unseen as these are pricey. I find adding a clear gloss or balm on top helps soften the foiled look (I do it with a lot of MAC Frost Lipsticks). I swatched these at the counter and wanted all six of the colors but limited myself to four.

Private Life is stunning warm gold foil, Spanish Flame is a peachy metallic, Venus Rising is a cool pink frost, Seadragon is the most stunning metallic plum I’ve ever seen. Pigment is excellent and smooth with easy to build color. Texture is smooth but since these are very metallic they look frosty on the lips. They have a comforting smooth feel on the lips and while they aren’t hydrating they don’t dry out the lips. My heart belongs to Venus Rising and Seadragon but as I know shimmer might not be your thing these won’t be everyone.

Up next are the Soleil Eye and Cheek Palettes which I completely love – 100%! It’s hard to pick a favorite as both are very good. The texture of the blush and highlighters are silky smooth and buttery soft. The blushes have a lovely natural looking glow on the complexion while I find the highlighters to be more shimmery. The pigment is soft but impressive. Eyeshadows have a mix of shimmer and glitters and are also incredibly soft and well pigmented. They apply on the lids effortlessly for a lovely glow. Both are on the glowy shimmery side.

Both are cased in white and gold rectangular compacts that have an almost clutch-like look to them. They are well made even though they are plastic and have a magnetic closure – for some reason I really like the way the compacts close.

The Soleil Eye and Cheek Palette in Cool has a cool pink blush, cool light pink highlighter, glitter light pink, glitter light lilac, shimmery violet grey, deep plum shimmer. If I were forced to pick just one I would pick this one which surprised me as I usually prefer warmer tones.

The Soleil Eye and Cheek Palette in Warm is simply stunning. It only has 1 glitter eyeshadow color. Shades in this are a yellow gold, warm tan gold glitter, soft sandy champagne tan, satiny brown and a soft champagne highlighter.

As many of you might be wondering how the shadows in these holiday palettes might compare to existing Tom Ford Eye Color Quads I pulled three to compare including Orchid Haze, Seductive Rose and Nude Dip.

Tom Ford Orchid Haze, Soleil Eye/Cheek Cool, Seductive Rose, Soleil Warm, Nude Dip

All of these made a significant dent in my wallet but I’m thrilled with everything. If I had to narrow down my picks I would skip two of the lip foils in Private Life and Spanish Flame simply because I have similar shimmery colors in my current stash.

I think both palettes are must haves but I am a die hard Tom Ford Beauty fan and love all things glowy that come in pretty packages. These fulfill all of my makeup dreams in terms of palettes and while I do think they should be priced at lower price points, given the price tag of their quads I think it does make sense. I think my readers are split in how they feel about shimmer. I do think everything in this collection is more on the shimmery and glowy side, but I really love the palettes and the lip foils can be toned down easily with clear gloss.

There are a few more items in the Winter Soleil Collection including 2 more Lip Foils in Creme Conque (gorgeous light pink) and Aperture (stunning bronze), Soleil Blanc Dry Oil Spray, Face Protect Broad Spectrum SPF 50 and a Soleil Brush Kit. All are very spendy and as I already have the Soleil Blanc perfume I decided to stick with it (although I haven’t tried the spray, I forgot to check at the counter).

The Winter Soleil collection is limited-edition. You can find all items at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Net-A-Porter, Sephora, Selfridges and other Tom Ford Beauty locations. If you’re a Sephora VIB don’t forget you can save 20% off your orders with code 20VIB through 11/14.

These have been out for a few weeks now, did you check out anything yet?

I think the lipstick is called Seadragon, not Snapdragon. Swatches are beautiful!

    • Sabrina November 13, 2016 at 1:43 am

Hi Rob, thank you so much for letting me know! OOPS! Updated the labels 🙂

  • SJ Sellers November 12, 2016 at 11:53 pm

after seeing your post, i'm now tempted to splurge on the Cool Palette and SnapDragon as well.

i think Private Life is VERRRRRY pretty on you Sabrina.

thank you as always for your informative post and gorgeous swatches.

I think Venus Rising is such a YOU color, it's so so pretty! Thanks for always being so sweet 🙂

  • Medina Santos November 13, 2016 at 12:47 am

Hello! Thank you for your wonderful review! I played with the warm palette today, at my local Neiman Marcus, and while I was impressed with the pigmentation and beauty of the shades, as always with Tom Ford's blushes and eyeshadows, I couldn't help but wonder if they are just too similar to those in previous offerings. It seems that the blush in them warm palette is very similar to "Love Lust," and the brown eyeshadow resembles the brown shade in the Nude Dip palette. What are you thoughts? I don't want to waste money, just because it's an all-in-one piece.

    • Sabrina November 13, 2016 at 1:48 am

Hi Medina, this is a tough one on the blush note because apparently TF reformulated their blushes, I have two variations of Love Lust. The original was deeper/brighter with more shimmer while the new one is more nude/lighter:

A few others confirmed that colors like Wicked have changed but I have not checked all current the blushes as I purchased mine a long time ago and they have lasted FOREVER.

Either way, the Warm palette blush does have a similar vibe to the original Love Lust blush. I did not have time to swatch them side by side.

I think the Warm palette deep brown is deeper than the darkest color in Nude Dip.

My thoughts are the palette is different enough to justify, but if you're unsure and already own similar colors then I'd say pass and find something you REALLY love.

I really love it, I can see myself taking it with me on vacations and getting regular use out of it, but I am a die hard TF fan.

    • SJ Sellers November 14, 2016 at 2:29 am

hi Medina – to add to what Sabrina said, i want to point out that the gold color (top left eyeshadow color) is verrry different than any color in Nude Dip. i LOVE it, but you will have to decide if that will attract you or not, dependent on your skin tone and what else you have in your collection. also – all the colors seem deeper than those in Nude Dip. Nude Dip is creates a softer, sweeter look overall. while the eye shades in the new pallette are more dramatic.

      hope this helps!

    • Tracey E. November 14, 2016 at 7:44 pm

Hi Medina, I was intrigued by your question about the blushes. When I swatched Love Lust and the blush shade in the warm palette, there were clear differences. On my light-medium skintone Love Lust comes off as a deep orange/coral with orange and golden shimmer, and a sheen finish. The blush in the palette is a brighter, lighter orange with a noticeable pink hue, and a matte finish. I like them both and they're different enough to own both without duplication.

Oh my life, your photography is too beautiful to cope with!! I love the way these lipsticks look on you and how shimmery they are. I don't own [and have never owned] anything Tom Ford, but bloody hell, it looks pretty!!

You're too kind! You need to treat yourself to something TF! New lips and boys colors are coming out soon – I think it's a great place to start with the line 🙂

  • Courtney Merritt November 13, 2016 at 2:52 am

I LOVE THIS POST! Thank you so much for sharing! I bought the cool palette, venus rising, and private life lip foils.

  • Courtney Merritt November 13, 2016 at 2:55 am

OH P.S. I love the shimmer glowy colors!!

  • Anonymous November 13, 2016 at 3:10 am

    Hi Sabrina

Do you think Venus Rising is similar to Summer Fling from a couple summers ago?

    Thanks for your great post!!

  • Tracey E. November 13, 2016 at 3:20 am

Hi Sabrina, thank you for the informative and timely review. I picked out the warm palette and Seadragon. On me, Seadragon looks like a deep metallic plum and I love it! I adore the gold shade in the warm palette. It alone, along with the blush and highlighter justify the palette. The deep shade looks more dark purple than brown on my lighter complexion. I am over the moon with this palette and plan to pick up another lip foil. I adore the metallic look. Thank again for your swatch comparisons and a reminder of TF palettes on my wish list.

    • SJ Sellers November 14, 2016 at 2:31 am

i totally agree with you Tracey! i can't stop staring at my own eyelids when i wear the gold shade LOL!

    • Tracey E. November 14, 2016 at 7:46 pm

I'm loving the shade below the gold, too. I also can't stop looking at my eyelids. Ha!!!

I just received my Warm and Cool palettes. When I opened them, I literally gasped at how beautiful they are. As always, TF doesn't skimp when it comes to quantity. You definitely get your money's worth and, if they are colors you'll wear often, they actually become bargains. The darkest eyeshadow in each palette is deep enough to use as a liner and so the only thing you need to complete a look, is mascara and lipstick. These are definitely a luxury purchase but what better time to treat yourself than during the holidays? Of course you can cobble together a similar look from products you already have, but if you are in the market for a beautifully integrated set, Cool and Warm are sure to fill the bill. As for the lipsticks, I gave those a miss. Their metallic finish simply wasn't very flattering on my old lips.

    • M CABLES November 13, 2016 at 8:06 pm

I agree with you on the lipsticks I am not a fan of the metallic finish I don't find it very flattering.

  • ROSE LYN November 13, 2016 at 2:50 pm

Hi Sabrina, which palette do you think would look better on deeper skin tones (e.g. MAC NC44)? Thanks for posting this.

  • M CABLES November 13, 2016 at 3:06 pm

Hi Sabrina, Thank you for such a thorough review. I would like to know if the highlighter in the cool palette is the same in Bi-Coastal palette? I own so many palettes from Tom Ford which I love and between all of them it looks like there are many similarities with the shadows, blushes and highlighter's.

  • Anonymous November 13, 2016 at 5:01 pm

Hi Sabrina – long time reader, first time commenting! I got both of the palettes even though I originally intended to just get the warm. Haven't used them yet but am interested to know how the blushes compare to Love Lust and Wicked. I didn't know TF reformulated the blushes…I have to say I'm a little disappointed to hear that because I own 5 out of the 6 in the original formula and I wouldn't change a single thing about them. Another blogger said that the shadows in the warm palette were the same formula as Nude Dip but I think she's probably mistaken? They certainly don't look the same in the pan…thanks for the great blog!

  • Mari November 13, 2016 at 7:03 pm

Thanks for very informative review with great swatches!! Soleil Palette Warm looks too gorgeous <3 (despite the price 😉 Love warm shimmer shades but is this highlighter as good also (not dry/powdery, more like wet/metallic finish)? + One matte crease shade would make it perfect travel palette too..

  • M CABLES November 13, 2016 at 8:05 pm

I just ordered the warm on saks.com using a 20% off that I had. I like both but I don't like that three of the shadows in the cool look very very sparkly frosty which I am not a big fan of if there was one sparkle shadow I probably would of purchased both but I am still curious to know if the highlighter in the Cool palette is similar to the highlighter in the Bi-Coastal palette it looks very close to me. I wish Tom Ford would not duplicate a lot of his beauty items it is redundant and very expensive to purchase the same over and over. I still haven't put a dent into most of his palettes.

  • Kierra November 14, 2016 at 1:06 am

I have no need for any of these but the packaging alone is to dieeeeeeeee for! That white lipsticks look amazing!

  • Lea November 14, 2016 at 2:35 am

They may have been referring to the actual formula of Nude Dip, not the color. Nude Dip is a gel powder hybrid, and only a few of his products come in that formulation – Nude Dip, AW16 duo, Moodlight and either Disco Dust or Honeymoon.

The Bi-Coastal shade isn't what's included in the cool palette; but I wouldn't consider Bi-Coastal to have a highlight shade – the lighter shade being more peac. The cool palette is a true highlighter, in my opinion but it would depend on skin tones as well.

    • jonirae November 16, 2016 at 4:19 am

wait, the eyeshadow quads aren’t all the same formula?? that makes sense, actually… but I wish they would make the difference more clear; I’m trying to figure out which to buy next, and that’s good to know! 🙂

  • Medina Santos November 14, 2016 at 7:02 am

Thanks so much for your detailed reply, Sabrina! You are awesome! ❤️

  • bella November 15, 2016 at 5:49 pm

I love your analysis; very through. All of them scream summer, and I would love to buy all of the lip foils as I love metallic/frost on my lips. I just think they look better on me, but the Sephora Vib sell just ended and I bought a bunch of things that I use all the time. TF is just out of my price range and I think it would definitely be "down-the-rabbit-hole!" LOL
All of the lip colors look gorgeous on you!

  • jaime November 16, 2016 at 5:24 am

Seriously SUCH a gorgeous collection! Those Lip Foils look incredible on you!!
