Tom Ford Lip Color: Spanish Pink 01

September 25, 2011

Tom Ford’s Spanish Pink 01 Lip Color is a richly pigmented light peachy-pink with a very slight hint of sparkle. On my lips it pulls more peachy than pink and the shimmer is not detectable. The lipstick goes on very smoothly blending naturally with your lips with full coverage. There is a soft delicious vanilla scent. Initially I was worried it would be too pale but this one has enough color to not wash me out. (For skintone reference, right now I’m Chanel Beige 30 in Vitalumiere Aqua and testing out the new Beige 30 Perfection Lumiere and Dolce & Gabbana’s Creamy Foundation in #144 Bronze.) Spanish Pink was previously featured and swatched with a number of other shades from Tom Ford earlier this month here (shown next to Pink Dusk, Sable Smoke, Nude Vanille etc.). Below are a few more close-ups and swatches.

Per request, here are a few comparisons. Tom Ford’s Spanish Pink is a peachy-pink hybrid. Burberry’s Delicate Rose is a pink version. Burberry Cameo is very similar but lighter, sheerer with slightly less pink. Chanel Chintz is the most coral in undertone.

Overall I love this color. It’s light, brightening, easy to wear and versatile. Lasting power of Tom Ford Lipsticks is a bit better than the average lipstick in my experience. The pigment is amazing, texture is to die for, and the scent is absolutely delicious. Are these really worth $48? This is a tough one. I’m inclined to say no lipstick is worth more than $30 even though many have reached the $32 level, prices are still increasing and I’ve been sucked into the hype. The formula of the Tom Ford is amazing and the lipsticks almost melt into the lip so I feel the purchase was worthwhile, but I’m still grumbling at the cost.

*Update* Also check it out on Tali at The Gloss Goss (so happy she’s back!!).

Le Métier de Beauté Ken Downing’s Bodacious Bordeaux Lip and Nail Duo

September 11, 2011

This fall Neiman Marcus Senior Vice President and Fashion Director Ken Downing worked with Le Métier de Beauté to create three matching lip and nail sets in rich, bold and romantic shades ($49 each). I was hoping to be able to purchase the nail polishes separately since I rarely wear reds or dark shades on the lips but decided to try something new and picked out the Bordacious Bordeaux/Wine on the Vine duo which has the softest lip color out of all three sets.

Bordacious Bordeaux Nail Lacquer is a deep wine magenta that layers into a deep wine cream. The texture is fairly thin making the color slightly transparent. It required three coats for full coverage. I love that Bordacious Bordeaux is the perfect medium wine shade – not too vampy, not too red, not too brown. The thin texture took a bit of work for me to get an even application. Three coats evens out everything nicely.

Wine on the Vine Moisture Lipstain is a shimmering reddish pink stain. The texture is that of a soft lipstain and molds well to the lips so you can barely feel anything on. On the hands it looks like a soft red without any visible shimmer. On the lips it goes on quite a bit brighter for me. I don’t know that it will look this red on most women, anything with fuschia or bright red shimmer tends to pull very bright on me for some reason. Being a stain formula I find these last longer than the average lipstick. Here it is softly swiped on my lips.

Here they are swatched on the arm side by side.

All three sets are beautiful and classic for fall. Even neutral lovers like myself will find that they are fun and nice for something different. The lips are all darker than I’m used to but the colors are lovely for evenings out or special occasions. Best Things in Beauty has a few other shades swatched and reviewed that I recommend you check out as well. I like these sets but my heart still belongs to their eyeshadows and lipglosses which I feel have some of the most gorgeous complex eye-catching shimmers that are wonderful for layering. The upside of these lip/nail duos is that they require little tweaking. They work well just as they are.

Tom Ford Lipstick Swatches: Pinks & Nudes

September 2, 2011
The new shades: Spanish Pink, Pink Adobe, Indian Rose, Nude Vanille, Adobe Smoke

New and original: Sable Smoke, Nude Vanille, Vanilla Suede (to be discontinued), Indian Rose, Pink Adobe, Pink Dusk (original packaging), Spanish Pink

The new pinks are very similar. They are lovely with slight variations in their undertone and base. You definitely do not need them all. Had I seen them in person first I would have just picked out one of the new pink shades. See Best Things in Beauty’s take on the pinks she picked out.
  • Spanish Pink is a peachy pink, upon closer inspection, I noticed this one has a bit of shimmer
  • Pink Dusk is a neutral rose pink (the lightest of the rose-pinks)
  • Pink Adobe is a more brown version of Pink Dusk
  • Indian Rose is a slightly deeper mauvey version of Pink Dusk with slight shimmer

The nudes seem to be variations of the originals as well. I do not have Blush Nude, but I suspect it’s very similar to Nude Vanille. I really wish they had kept Vanilla Suede, it has a beautiful shimmer texture I think is unique for a highly pigmented nude.
  • Vanilla Suede is a gorgeous pale golden beige shimmer
  • Nude Vanille is a pale peach cream
  • Adobe Smoke is a caramel nude

Swatches with different angles and lighting, all richly pigmented and smooth. They apply softly but not too soft. The new shades appear to have the same formulas as the original shades. They have a natural sheen you can see in the sunlight. The shimmer is only visible with Vanilla Suede.

A First Look at Tom Ford’s New Lip Colors

August 31, 2011
Tom Ford’s newest lipstick shades have arrived online at Saks.com. See the full lineup of the new shades here (plus what’s being phased out and what’s staying). I eagerly ordered some neutrals sight-unseen in Spanish Pink 01, Pink Adobe 02, Indian Rose 04, Nude Vanille 12 and Sable Smoke 14 ($48 each for 0.1 oz/3g). There are a few changes in packaging. The lipsticks still come in a heavy weight rectangular twist-up tube but now come in a dark mahogany & gold finish (rather than the white). Without direct light shining on the tubes, they appear to be pure black. Another change is in the engraved lettering on the top. They now say TF instead of Tom Ford. I was able to order two of the original shades online at Saks.com last week – if you’ve delayed your purchasing on the older packaging and shades, act fast! It looks like they will be pulled very soon.

White original packaging versus the new dark mahogany packaging:

*Update* One shot for Amy to compare the Tom Ford packaging to Edward Bess, Chanel, Burberry.

I have not yet had a chance to swatch or play with these. Upon opening all 5 you can tell that they have the same wonderful vanilla scent as the original shades. All the new ones I picked out are cremes with the exception of Indian Rose which appears to have a slight shimmery sheen to the tube. My first thoughts were to wonder if I had lost my mind in ordering so many neutrals all at once sight-unseen. I suspect that Nude Vanille will be a challenge to work with simply because it’s on the lighter side. At this point in time I’m not sure whether I should just leave it untouched to re-gift it or take a risk and swipe it to see if it will work. Given the luck I’ve had with Pink Dusk, I suspect the others will work well with my coloring. I will need to play with these in the next week or so to see.

I apologize I don’t have swatches yet but I’ve been a bit short on swatching time. I haven’t compared any of these to other shades (Pink Dusk included) so I can’t give any assessment at this time. They literally just arrived and I wanted to give a little sneak peek of these in hopes that it will help you know what to expect with the new neutrals!

Sneak Peek: Upcoming Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color Collection

August 22, 2011
Those who have experienced the luxury of Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color will be excited to learn that Tom Ford’s upcoming makeup line will be expanded to include new shades of lipstick. I received a preview card of the upcoming shades and am already creating a wishlist. Some existing colors have been mixed together to create new ones which means a few will be discontinued. Also, the new shades will all come in the dark mahogany colored packaging instead of the white. I’ve been told Neimans expects the release to be sometime in October. I apologize the scan of the card I received is a bit blurry but here is the new lineup.

New shades: Nude Vanille, Sable Smoke, Pink Adboe, Coco Ravish, Deep Mink, Spanish Pink, Indian Rose, Casablanca, Flamingo, Violet Fatale, Wild Ginger, Scarlet Rouge, Crimson Noir

Original shades that are staying: Black Orchid, Blush Nude, Cherry Lush, Pink Dusk, True Coral

Original shades that will be phased out: Bruised Plum, Ginger Fawn, Moroccan Rouge, Pure Pink, Smoke Red, Vanilla Suede, Warm Sable

Beaut.ie: The Irish Beauty Blog gives us a first look at beautiful real life preview photos and BellaSugar has some promotional photos as well. Of the existing shades, I adore Pink Dusk (a highly pigmented nude pink, aka perfection in a tube) and I’ve been eager to try more but none of the other shades have really spoken to me. I look forward to seeing the new colors. If you’ve fallen in love with any particular shade, I recommend you check to see if it’s on the new lineup – now might be the time to stock up if it’s going to be discontinued.

Dolce & Gabbana Almond Lipstick

August 4, 2011

Dolce & Gabbana Almond wraps up my review of the items I picked out from fall collection for 2011. Almond lipstick is a luminous richly pigmented warm caramel nude infused with a gold shimmer. It gives full coverage with a hint of shimmer (no frost). There is a natural glossy sheen with the signature soft Dolce & Gabbana rose scent. The texture is smooth and feels natural even though the coverage is full. The color instantly warms up the skin giving me perfect nude-caramel lips. Pure love.

This color might look familiar to you. I found quite a few similar shades, but none had the same rich pigment and depth. Left to right: Dolce & Gabbana Sparkling Shine Lipstick, Dolce & Gabbana Almond Shine Lipstick, NARS Cafe Con Leche, Chanel Secret Rouge Coco, Bobbi Brown Beige Lipstick, Dolce & Gabbana Glossy Gloss

It’s quite similar to Glossy lipgloss in the tubes. However, as you can see from the swatches, Glossy has a slightly transparent quality with more visible gold shimmer making it lighter. Almond appears more tan/almondy. I think these 2 will layer nicely together although these days I prefer to wear either lipstick or lipgloss.

Dior Blue Tie for Fall 2011: Blue Tie Palette & Serum de Rouge Crystal

July 29, 2011

Dior’s Fall Collection this year is called Blue Tie with a heavy emphasis on deep rich navy blues for eyes and nails. The look featured for Dior is quite dramatic with an intense smokey eye and soft pink lips. The collection launched several weeks ago and I initially decided to pass on the entire collection. I can’t pull off navy on the eyes and I was already smitten with Chanel Blue Satin for the nails. The colors for lips are amazing (there are some amazing pinks and nudes) but did not seem like must-haves for me.
So how did I end up with items from this collection? Well, after I played at the counter and passed, I saw Karla Sugar’s Blue Tie swatches and knew I had to go back. The Serum de Rouge formula is among my favorites (I’m not sure why I haven’t written about them before) for lipsticks. They are truly moisturizing and make the lips glow and feel hydrated without having too much slip. The colors work well to enhance the lips while making them look completely luscious. I picked out Primrose Crystal 215 and Tea Rose Crystal 455.
The Blue Tie Palette in Smoking Blue 001 was kindly sent to me by Dior (a lovely surprise!). I would not have purchased this on my own since navy looks too sharp on my skin and especially given the reports of sheerness and chalky textures on KarlaSugar, Temptalia and  Beauty Moogle. The packaging is indeed stunning in a heavy silver mirrored compact complete with applicators and a swivel lid to protect the lip product from shadow debris. I was a bit weary of how this would perform, but a few beautiful look reviews gave me hope, especially from The RAEviewer, Lipstick Musings and Tiffany’s Makeup Story. Photos first and then my review at the bottom of this post.

My thoughts:
The Blue Tie Palette in Smoking Blue 001 has a quad of smoky colors in sheer matte navy-black, deep denim blue shimmer, deep charcoal with silver flecks and a metallic smoky grey. The lipgloss seems to be a lipstick-lipgloss hybrid and is a sheer petal pink without shimmer. When swatched on the back of my hand, the shadows barely showed up. The texture is indeed rather dry. I layered a primer (UDPP) on the arm and then swatched the shadows as heavily as I could with the sponge tip applicators. As you can see, they are still fairly sheer, especially the top left matte shade. I applied this on the eyes following the tips from the other vlogs and blogs. I was pleasantly surprised to find the color shows up better on the eyes (but only over a  well primed eye.) Still, the product looks so much prettier in the palette. The result for me was a soft smokey eye. If you’re scared of over-doing a smokey eye, then sheer-darks are the way to go because it will be virtually impossible for you to mess up your eye makeup. The colors are layerable for a medium-intense smoky eye. Still, the colors aren’t really me, I would not have purchased this palette on my own. It’s workable, but takes more effort than your average eyeshadow palette to get a decent application.

Primrose Crystal is a nude pink-beige and Tea Rose Crystal is a sheer brighter pink. I picked the most neutral of the options but really all of the colors in this collection are lovely. The colors I picked look sheer when swatched but they work well with your natural lip color to enhance the lips and they do show up. Karla’s swatches are a better representation of the true color (in my opinion). These are pricey at $32 but completely worth every penny. I love the twist-up and click feature. Makes these easy to use and non-messy. They are your easy swipe-and-go kind of lipstick and require no extra tweaking.

Did you try anything from the Blue Tie Collection? What were your likes/dislikes?
