I have another mascara + primer roundup today! As much as I love and swear by waterproof formulas like Chanel Le Volume Waterproof, L’Oreal Lash Paradise Waterproof and Tom Ford Waterproof Extreme (sold out everywhere!), so many of you prefer regular formulas because they’re easier to take off. I have straight lashes and live in a city that has high humidity so I really prefer waterproof most of the time so it’s beach-proof and sweat-proof. For me it’s worth the extra time and effort to remove every evening. Still I understand it’s a total pain to remove which makes it not worth it for everyone (I swear by these Almay pads to remove the most stubborn of waterproof makeup, make sure you pick the waterproof remover version). The good news is there are a lot of new formulas that launched I think you might want to check out. A couple of these aren’t entirely brand new but new to me.
Home decor / style note details at the bottom of the post, but for all those asking my nail polish is OPI Another Ramen-tic Evening.

Pat McGrath cannot do wrong in my eyes and she launched the new FetishEyes Mascara earlier this month. I received an early sneak peek and have been testing it for a couple months now. It’s a great non-clumping, defining mascara. It adds length and doesn’t smudge. For me it doesn’t quite add as much volume or drama as other formulas do but it’s a solid one and I truly appreciate that there is zero clumping. Curl holding is not the best, but also not the worst. If you don’t have issues with straight lashes I think you will have no problem with this formula. If you haven’t tried anything from her FetishEyes Collection I highly recommend her Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner (the two available in the Xtreme Duo bundle on her website).

Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara has been raved about my SO many of you. You’ve told me it’s your HOLY GRAIL. I bought the pink packaging one at Sephora and really love it. The regular formula does not smudge but we have had a cold winter here (it has been down to 40s/50s) and even though it’s warming up the humidity isn’t what it normally is. I am worried it will smudge with the humidity so I’m going to investigate in the waterproof version soon. This one adds the most volume that I’ve tried for a non-waterproof formula. It will hold the curl too.

Marc Jacobs launched a Velvet Primer to go with their Velvet Noir Mascara. I feel like most primers have done little for my lashes except the L’Oreal Lash Paradise Primer which is great, but not necessary. Even most high-end ones just didn’t do enough to wow me so I had low expectations for this Marc Jacobs Velvet Primer. It exceeded every expectation I had. Paired with the Velvet Noir Mascara it helps the mascara adhere SO much better and makes the mascara look much better. I haven’t tried it with other formulas but am going to. For now I’m thoroughly impressed. I think it’s worth checking out.

The YSL Faux Cils Volume Effect in The Curler just came on my radar. I don’t know how new it is (or if it’s really is new). It’s described as a “curling mascara featuring a unique hybrid brush that dramatically curls and defines lashes for an unparalleled full fan effect.” The description alone plus all near 5-star reviews sold me. It didn’t work for me or knock my socks off. It doesn’t hold the curl or curl my lashes. I really do love the brush and how it’s curved and has rubber bristles. It just didn’t live up to the description for me. I like that there’s no clumping, it defines nicely and doesn’t smudge. I just don’t see enough volume and for me there is no curling effect or hold.

Last but not least is the Sisley So Volume Mascara. For some reason I did not think this was new but the press email I received says it is. I’ve tried a few other formulas from Sisley and they’re all ridiculously expensive. This one has a thick chubby wand with bristles and does indeed add serious volume. It has ingredients to soften the lashes which is nice. Once applied it doesn’t have that crunchy feel most mascaras have but it stays put. I haven’t used it long enough to see if it is indeed strengthening but I don’t know that I would be able to tell with any formula. I like this because it adds volume with one stroke. It doesn’t hold the curl as well as waterproof formulas but doesn’t make mine go straight immediately. It’s also included in the Rachel Goodwin x Les Stars Collection bundle.

I hope you found this roundup helpful! I think mascara is always tricky for me to write about because even with reviews it’s hard to tell how one may or may not work for you. We all have different lash lengths, density and eye shapes. I’ve tried so many that worked for others that didn’t for me so I know it can be the case for you as well. I still really prefer waterproof formulas so they’ll hold the curl for me. I end up with raccoon eyes most of the time so I’m surprised I found some non-waterproof formulas that didn’t smudge this round.
A few notes on other items featured in the post. On the nails is OPI Another Ramen-tic Evening, Mirrored Trays here, Coffee table here, my favorite eyelash curler is from MAC. Flat zip pouches in the Marc Jacobs photo are from The Daily Edited.
What’s your favorite non-waterproof mascara formula? Always love reading about your recommendations!
Press samples from Sisley, Marc Jacobs and Pat McGrath.

The Sisley mascara is overpriced, but I love their formulas. I love the Chanel waterproof with the Chanel primer. It works for me.
I have tried so many expensive mascaras and in general I am a makeup snob, but amazingly my fave mascara is L’oreal Voluminous Superstar mascara. I love it! It lengthens, it lasts, it’s amazing.
Glad you have a holy grail!
These are beautiful but I generally stick to drugstore. I cannot justify the cost when there are so many good ones that are less expensive.
I love the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara. Lancome makes the best mascara, in my opinion. I am a die-hard fan of their Definicils Mascara. But, Sabrina, the burning question is…what nail polish color are you wearing?!
Lol!
Thanks! It’s linked in the post – OPI Another Ramentic Evening, part of their Tokyo Collection 🙂
Really helpful review. I can pass on the Pat McGrath based on your review. I also appreciate your tip about wiping the wand clean after each use. Doing this when the tube starts to dry out greatly enhances performance and also helps to use up the tube so it gets replaced more often. Thank you!
Glad you liked the review! Also glad the tube wiping helps. I actually don’t wipe clean after every use, more like 1x per week or whenever it starts to feel clumpy 🙂
I couldn’t agree more with that Marc Jacobs Velvet Primer! I have tried so many mascara primers and they are a waste of money but this I love! It pairs really well with other mascaras too.
Yay! Glad you loved the Primer as well 🙂
I love Lancome’s Cils Booster and have used it for many years with my choice of mascara. I love Monsieur Big and Chanel le volume and have been interested in trying Pat Mcgrath’s as I love her products
Nice picks!
Sisley makes incredible mascaras, but ouch! The price! Since I toss my mascara out every three months without fail, it pains me to shell out so much money for a product that I’ll have for such a short time 🙁 During the holiday season, though, when there is so much entertaining going on, I’ll splurge because Sisley’s mascara really is transformative.
The mascara that I’ve been using on a daily basis for the past two years is Bobbi Brown’s Smoky Eye Mascara. It wears beautifully on me without flaking, fading, or creating raccoon eyes. I have quite long, black eyelashes that have a slight curl so I want an easily removed mascara that will fan them out and hold them up.
I think Sisley makes so many wonderful things but yes the PRICE! EEEPS. I’m really bad at throwing out mascara right at the three month mark. I should be more diligent. The BB Smoky Eye is among my favorite classic formulas 🙂
I am disappointed that you didn’t review Glossier Lash Slick. It is wonderful in my opinion…I just ordered my 3rd tube as a backup. Glossy, no clumps, lengthening…doesn’t reallybthicken, but I don’t care for that look…always looks clumpy to me. You need to try it!
I already reviewed the Glossier when it launched! It’s a good one 🙂 You must have missed it!

I forgot! Glad you liked it…
I’m with you on waterproof mascara! Rarely does a reg formula hold the curl for me.
Funny enough, I actually prefer the original Monsiuer Big Mascara to the waterproof; the waterproof transfers while the original doesn’t!

Oh interesting about the Lancome formulas! Thanks for letting me know 🙂
I’m currently using Clarins mascara. Have you tried it?

Do you apply mascara right after the primer, or do you let the primer dry before applying mascara?
You can do either. For the L’Oreal primer it works if I apply when still wet. For the MJB primer I tried both ways, either one works for me.
I really want to try out the MJ lash primer, I feel like the packaging is so pretty.
Perfect Shade of Mauve
I agree!
My favorite mascara at the moment is Big Tease by Buxom. It’s beyond amazing❤️

Sounds great!
For years I was a die hard fan of Roller Lash, but last year I wound up with a few travel size Monsieur Big and YSL The Shock, and am no longer in a committed mascara relationship as a result.
Great round-up! My lashes, decent thickness, straight, and short. I just purchased Mother’s mascara and MJ’s primer ~ LOVE them together. In the past I have used Guerlain Maxi Lash as a primer while trying different mascaras for curl, length, and volume (in that order). Wish I could find everything in one ~ Mother’s mascara is amazing, velvet black pigment, NO clumping, great volume, but I have to work at getting the length I want (false lash length). So I am using MJ primer, one coat of Guerlain Maxi Lash, and 2-3 coats on Pat McGrath. This is as close to lash perfection I have got with mascara products. P.S. prior to this I was using Hour Glass Extreme Caution, which gave more length but less volume and it clumps on me. Might have to try it with the MJ primer and see if it makes a difference. And lastly I love the scent of Pat McGrath mascara!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll try the PMG mascara with the MJ primer, sounds like a perfect combo! I loved the Guerlain waterproof mascara for years, just haven’t used the line in a long long time.
Great round-up Sabrina! I, too, have found lash primers to be underwhelming. I have used both the Chanel and Lash Paradise versions. I will try the Marc Jacobs per your review. After trying many, many mascaras, the best one I’ve found is MAC Haute&Naughty. It’s excellent, and comes in waterproof as well. There are two different options for lashes in the tube – a more “natural” look, and one that’s more dramatic. Simply an excellent product on every level. I encourage you to try it!
Ahh good to know I’m not the only one who feels primers didn’t work. I love MAC formulas, they’re so under-rated!
For years I was a die hard fan of Roller Lash, but last year I wound up with a few travel size Monsieur Big and YSL The Shock, and am no longer in a committed mascara relationship as a result.
YSL The Shock is the best YSL mascara I’ve tried. I keep trying other formulas because they make them sound SO good, but The Shock really tops them all.
So glad I read this post before purchasing the YSL curler mascara. I have clients who are always asking my advice on the best high end mascara’s and this has been on my radar for little while now but I haven’t tried it. There are so many others I love (especially Lancome!) that I’ll pass on YSL for now. Great round-up! Thanks.
Glad you liked the roundup!!
Hope to hear more update from Marc Jacobs primer and Lancome big mascara!
