On My Radar / New in Beauty

June 19, 2014

I hope everyone is having a great week so far. Some new things in beauty on my radar.

There will be nine limited edition shades of nail polish in a 3.1 Phillip Lim for NARS Nail Collection. One of the shades, Insidious, will be a NARS Boutique exclusive. In addition a canvas nail pochette will be released. These will be available July 15, 2014 at NARS boutiques and narscosmetics.com; August 1, 2014 at Sephora and Dept./Specialty stores.

Bobbi Brown has a second summer release called Surf and Sand, some items have started to trickle in online. There are two eyeshadow palettes in Surf (aqua and pastels) and Sand (earthy neutrals), two Long-Wear Eye Pencils, two Brightening Blushes, three Sheer Lip Colors.

Frédéric Malle and Carlos Benaïm have created a new fragrance Eau de Magnolia that launches this month. I haven’t checked it out yet but I’m hoping to soon. It sounds absolutely divine. Some details on Kafkaesque Blog.

Chanel Fall Beauty has arrived online Chanel.com and Bloomingdales. I have yet to check out the collection in person but reports on Twitter and Instagram indicate it has arrived at some counters. I ordered the three nail polishes in Secret, Orage and Atmosphere online and expect them this week. I’m eyeing the glossimer and liquid eye liners but undecided on most of the collection. Several have e-mailed me that this is a see-before-you-buy kind of collection. If you’ve checked it out, please share in the comments.

Burberry has two new eyeshadows out in Storm Grey No. 27 and Graphite No. 28. Thanks to Café Makeup for letting me know about these. I called the counter in San Francisco and found they aren’t with any full collection but were two new colors released. I’ll have a review soon. In the meantime check out the swatches on Gummy Vision.

NudeStix is a new line of natural and nude pencils, exclusive to Space NK (or Space NK via Bloomingdales). All the products are in pencil/stick form. The Eye Pencils look like they have quite a few lovely neutral shimmers. The Lip and Cheek Pencils have a wider range of colors from light to dramatic. I think a trip to Space NK is in order soon.
What’s on your radar this week?

Lipstick Queen Jungle Queen Lipstick and Open Secret Oxymoron

April 23, 2014

Lipstick Queen has released two new lip products this month for spring/summer. Jungle Queen Lipstick ($22 at SpaceNK) is a vibrant coral designed to coordinate with bold animal prints. Open Secret ($24 now at Lipstick Queen, launching soon at SpaceNK) is the latest color in the Oxymoron lip/cheek formula, it’s a soft baby peony pink with a pop of color. Lipstick Queen sent these brighter shades for review – they aren’t colors normally what I gravitate towards but they are easy to wear brights. While I’m a huge fan of neutral lips, I get numerous requests to review items that are bolder in color. Here are two that are definitely bold.

Jungle Queen Lipstick is Poppy King’s modern twist on a classic red. Jungle Queen is a bold coral cream. It has a moisturizing feel but semi-matte finish. It’s rich in coverage and pigment which requires precise application (mine photographed below is a bit messy). I found the formula to stay put for several hours without any bleeding, but if you’re like me and don’t always apply lipstick precisely (one reason I like sheers), you may want to add a liner first. This is one of those universally flattering shades I suspect is like Viva Glam Rihanna (if you like bold lips). It’s rich enough to cover the most pigmented lips. I have it shown applied straight from the tube and then blotted to show it will fade.

Open Secret Oxymoron is a lip/cheek stain in a mirrored compact. This is my first time trying their stains. I found it to be fully matte with full coverage. I do think you need to moisturize the lips first. It’s not drying but the texture is matte so it will highlight/emphasize and flakes or creases. Open Secret is a pale pink with a pop. It’s not too pale so it washes me out and has a bit of coral undertone to prevent it from looking blue. I tried this on the cheeks and found it difficult to blend with my fingers – I’m open to suggestions on how to apply if you’ve tried these. It photographs well on the lips. On the cheeks it shows up as well but doesn’t photograph well (at least on me). Lasting power is quite impressive on the lips but the matte finish made it feel a bit dry (it didn’t dry out my lips though, it just felt dry).

Comparisons to show how vibrant these new colors from Lipstick Queen are: NARS Torres del Paine (swatch here), Tom Ford Sweet Spot (swatches here), NARS Lodhi, NARS Anguila Matte Multiple, NARS Laos Matte Multiple, Chanel Magnolia Rouge Coco and Chanel Jersey Rose Rouge Coco (discontinued).

Both are rich full coverage colors. I like both colors but don’t know that I am brave enough to wear Jungle Queen everyday. Open Secret works well for the color but I tend to prefer shades with a bit of a sheen. This can be fixed by adding a bit of gloss on top. I wouldn’t have picked out either shade on my own but it’s nice to explore shades and textures out of my comfort zone and discover new items.
Both Jungle Queen ($22) and Open Secret ($24) launch this month. Jungle Queen is available exclusively at SpaceNK and Lipstick Queen. Open Secret is available at Lipstick Queen now and should launch at SpaceNK soon. (PS Don’t forget, The Beauty Look Book readers still have access to a SpaceNK online promotion through the 25th with code LOOKBOOK20, details here.)
Do you have any Lipstick Queen favorites? I know there are many die-hard fans of her line. I haven’t explored it recently but would love to hear about what you’ve tried.

Rococo Nail Apparel Nude Wardrobe Collection

September 18, 2011

Earlier this year A Model Recommends gave us all a preview/sneak peek of a new collection in the works from Rococo Nail Apparel called the Nude Wardrobe Collection. Six nude nail colors have finally been released to SpaceNK and select Bloomingdales SpaceNK stores in sheer gloss, satin and full pigmented cream finishes. These retail for $16.50 each for 14 ml / 0.5 fl oz.

Following a season of loud and proud nails, this autumn/winter takes a turn for the subtle with nude nails firmly back on the style agenda. Inspired by the catwalk collections Rococo Nail Apparel have created a wearable wardrobe of six nude nail colours each designed to perfect and flatter – whatever the outfit, skin tone or mood. Rococo Nail Apparel have been quietly building a cult underground following since the brand launched two years ago and today continues to predict trends rather than follow the crowd. Commenting on the Nude Wardrobe sisters and co-founders Ange and Vernice Walker say, “The aim was to create an I-want-them-all collection of nudes that each delivers a highly polished and chic finish. We definitely predict nude as the new black this autumn/winter.”

The Rococo Nail Apparel Nude Wardrobe collection includes the following shades (shown L to R below):

  • LAB Nude 1.0 Sheer Gloss – a sheer transparent white gloss
  • LAB Nude 3.0 Sheer Gloss – a sheer transparent cream nude beige, used backstage by Ange & Vernice Walker at the Roland Mouret A/W show during Paris Fashion Week
  • LAB Nude 6.0 Satin Crème – an opaque pale neutral mixture of pale pink & beige & grey
  • LAB Nude 8.0 Sheer Gloss – a transparent warm nude beige
  • LAB Nude 8.8 Crème – a full pigment tan caramel nude beige
  • LAB Nude 9.0 Crème – a soft brown cream, it’s borderline taupe, but not quite

Rococo Nail Apparel succeeded in generating the “I want them all” bug. When I saw these at SpaceNK Bloomingdales in San Francisco I thought that they all looked divine. I’m a sucker for nudes and couldn’t wait to put these on. I’ve applied one on each finger all with 2 coats. The Sheer Gloss finish shades 1.0, 3.0 and 8.0 all seemed a bit streaky with my unsteady hand. Applying 3 coats evened everything out. At the nail salon, a perfect smooth application was achieved with only 2 coats (your mileage may vary) for 3.0.

Here are more swatches on nail wheels (thanks to Cafe Makeup who helped me find these). It was a bit of a challenge to have 1.0 (the sheer white) show up on a white nail wheel since it’s very sheer.

I’ve pulled a few other nudes, beiges and taupes to compare for you. Included are Dior Sienna, MAC Blissed Out, MAC Abalone Shell, Chanel Inattendu, Dior Nude Chic 219 (d/c), Dolce & Gabbana Nude, Chanel Beige Petale, Chanel Particuliere, Chanel Khaki Rose and Dior Camel. (Past available reviews have been linked if you want more detail.)

While 3.0 and 8.0 looked almost identical in the bottles, on the nails 3.0 is paler and 8.0 is more peachy. I had 3.0 applied early last week on the nails and the lasting power was amazing. It lasted a full week without any chipping or tipwear. If my nails hadn’t grown so fast I think I could have worn this past a full week. While the sheer beiges might not be extremely unique and easily dupeable, I found these to be easy to wear and naturally flattering and the quality excellent.
I can see myself getting regular use out of each and every shade. They are all beautiful and easy to incorporate into your weekly wardrobe since they are so neutral, it shouldn’t be hard to coordinate your look with your clothing. I love them all. 1.0 might be a bit of work, but sheer whites can be a challenge to wear on nails anyways. With so many options I can’t decide which one to wear next although I think I have my eye on 9.0 (it looks like a softer lighter version of Chanel’s Particuliere).
One more shot of the collection, all lined up:

Have you checked out the Rococo Nail Apparel new nude shades yet? Thoughts? Did you buy any or did you decide you already had similar shades in your stash? What’s your favorite “nude” nail polish? For a full list of availability, check out Space.NK.Apothecary.com.

Rococo Nail Apparel: Stone Cold Karma

April 29, 2010
Rococo Nail Apparel has released a few new shades for spring and Stone Cold Karma caught my eye from SpaceNK. I ordered this online along with a few other shades (will be featured soon). Stone Cold Karma is a grey-mauve cream with a subtle pearl finish that you can only see when you look closely. This is an odd shade because sometimes it looks mauve, sometimes it looks more grey depending on the lighting which you’ll be able to see in the photo swatches below. In this way it reminds me of Chanel Particuliere – it looks brown in the bottle, but on the toes, sometimes it pulls more mauve, sometimes straight grey, sometimes a mushroom brown. Perhaps my eyes are just playing tricks on me.

Rococo Nail Apparel Stone Cold Karma (3 coats):

Manicure: Rococo Nail Apparel Stone Cold Karma
Pedicure: Chanel Particuliere

Rococo Nail Apparel Stone Cold Karma compared to:
Rescue Beauty Lounge Grunge
OPI Tickle My Francey
Chanel Particuliere

I had 3 coats applied to get full coverage. It’s lovely, but I think I’m just not really used to greys on my fingers. It’s in the same color family as RBL Grunge and OPI Tickle My Francey. In the bottles, they look really similar, but as you can see in the swatches, they are very different once applied on the nails. Compared to RBL Grunge, Rococo Stone Cold Karma’s sparkles are more visible giving it more depth so it’s not so flat-looking.

Rococo Nail Apparel Nail Polishes retail for $16 each. I found the line at SpaceNK.
