NARS Afterglow Sweet Sensations Collection

NARS launched their Sweet Sensations Collection for spring with new shade extensions in their Afterglow Collection lineup. They have a new Afterglow Irresistible Eyeshadow Palette ($60), six new Afterglow Sensual Shine Lipsticks ($32 each), and three new shades of Afterglow Liquid Blush ($32). I have swatches of the entire collection. Everything has launched at Nordstrom, NARS, Ulta Beauty and Sephora.

Afterglow Irresistible Eyeshadow Palette

The Afterglow Irresistible Eyeshadow Palette has 12 shades with a rosy theme. It has a good mix of mattes, soft shimmers and sparkles. Texture and pigment of shades is consistently good among all shades. Mattes are soft, easy to blend, smooth. Shimmers have a subtle sheen. Sparkles are really finely milled glitter toppers with a pretty finish that isn’t too sparkly or chunky.

The color theme has a similar vibe to many previous palettes so I don’t know that I’d call it a must-have based on the colors, but it performs well. It pulls very warm – there are a lot of rose or brown tones.

Afterglow Sensual Shine Lipsticks

The standouts in the collection are the Afterglow Sensual Shine Lipsticks. I love this formula for the pigment, texture and feel. I already own most of the shades from the initial launch (review + swatches here) and still use them on a regular basis. The new spring shades are STUNNING! I think they have the perfect pop of color and are wearable even for neutral lip lovers. I am all about a natural lip, but I’m loving the tones of these spring shades. Three of the shades are similar in the brownish/reddish family but have differences in the undertone.

Voyeur is a peachy brown
High Gear is a coral red brown
Aragon is a brown red chestnut
Wild Ride is burgundy red with slight berry tones
No Inhibitions is a beautiful bright raspberry pink
All In is a pretty berry plum

Afterglow Liquid Blush

There are three new shades of Afterglow Liquid Blush. The formula is a lightweight almost gel-like liquid. These blend out to a sheer medium finish. The deeper shades like the new spring colors have more color payoff than the lighter colors but blend out to a more natural finish. (Swatches of other shades here.)

Aragon is a chestnut brown, Orgasm Rush is a brown with a subtle gold shimmer, Secret Lover is a watermelon pink. I love the pink one, I think it’s the perfect shade for spring.

Lasting power is very good, once they set they stay put and look fresh for hours without sliding off the face. I really like these for a liquid blush, but in general powder blush is still my formula of choice for cheek makeup.

Winter Skin Care Essentials – Body Care Loves

It’s been a dry winter this year in Florida and colder than usual although I suspect it’s usually very cold and dry for most of you in the winter. I’ve had a few things in rotation I’ve been loving that I wanted to share to combat dry skin focusing on body care. I have picks at multiple price points.

Body Lotion and Creams

There are so many great body creams and lotions on the market but scent is something I am so picky about that I feel like I am missing out on a lot of great formulas. I usually prefer something unscented or very lightly scented when it comes to body moisturizers. I also need something to feel smooth and not sticky so anything “balmy” is usually a no-go for me.

My favorite body cream right now is the Herbivore Botanicals Cloud Milk Firming Body Cream ($40, at Herbivore, Sephora and Nordstrom). It’s what I wanted the Kopari Ultra Restore Body Butter ($36) to be which felt a little too thick and smelled too sweet for my taste. The one from Herbivore Botanicals has a soft cushiony velvety creamy texture hat melts into the skin. It’s scented with coconut and vanilla but isn’t too strong. Has a very hydrating feel that absorbs well and doesn’t pill.

Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion ($14.99) is a great budget-friendly option that is fragrance free, semi-thick but doesn’t feel greasy. It does take a little work to massage into the skin fully but I really like it. I brought the travel size with me on a trip.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Body Cream ($30 – $65, also in this Duo Bundle Set) is one of the more expensive options I’ve tried. If you like the Magic Cream for the face I think you’ll like this one. I love both. It has a super luxurious feel and texture. There is a subtle scent like face version but it’s light and fresh. It has shea butter and is very soothing. Also has a smoothing effect. I do think it’s incredibly overpriced but I think the formula is really good.

Prequel Barrier Therapy Skin Protectant Cream ($18) is a soothing body cream with 1% colloidal oatmeal. It’s what I wanted the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream to be in body lotion form, although in looking at their website I just found out they actually do have an Ultra Repair Body Lotion ($38) that seems to be exclusive to their website. The Prequel Barrier Cream worked to help calm down some dry skin flare ups I’ve had this winter season. Some areas of my hands and arms became so dry they started to crack and turn red and burn to the point I couldn’t sleep. A mix of Vaseline and the Prequel cream helped calm everything down and restore moisture. On normal days I love this on the body just by itself.

A number of you recommended Osea, in particular the Anti-Aging Body Balm and Body Butter. I had a mini sample of the Anti-Aging Body Balm to try and the formula is incredible! It is on the balmy side with some slip in the finish so it doesn’t really have much of a dry down. I am trying to decide if I can wear this even with the balmy texture because it feels incredible but I don’t like sticking to my clothes. I think I may order their Glow to Go Starter ($32) set to try a few other things.

Body Oils

I love a good body oil but this is another category where I am really particular with scents and texture. Thick ones will most likely help hydrate the best but I prefer ones that are not thick or sticky.

The Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil ($120, available at Tata Harper, Bluemercury, Nordstrom and Sephora) came highly recommended by over a dozen of you in a poll I did over the holidays. It is heavily scented but in a pleasant way. It smells like a spa treatment – green, fresh and definitely revitalizing. Absorbs beautifully into the skin and hydrates. I plan on trying the Resurfacing Body Serum or Smoothing Scrub next.

Celine Huile Celeste ($195) was quite the splurge but I love it mainly for the scent. It’s one of three new additions to the Celine perfume lineup in the Cologne Celeste scent. It’s a beautiful fresh citrus, notes include ANGELICA, SWEET LEMON ESSENCE, PETITGRAIN, NEROLI ACCORD, AMBRETTE BUTTER AND ORRIS BUTTER. This is a pour out style kind of bottle and I wish it had a stopper or spray. I managed to get an extra spritzer cap for the top in store although I don’t know how long it will work as it’s designed for the cologne. Texture is dreamy and beautiful. Just like you’d expect of a massage oil. I bought this for the scent which is very light compared to the cologne, but I really love it and will use every last drop. I don’t think I will repurchase due to the price but it was a beautiful splurge.

Chanel L’Huile Vanille ($230) is another splurge that I think was 100% worth it. The Chanel Body Massage Oils come in four scents for now and I would love to own them all but Vanille is my favorite. It smells just like the Sublimage Skincare line which is very unique. It has the most beautiful texture with a soft scent. I love the way it feels and absorbs into the skin. The only downside is the large glass packaging. It’s so beautiful and very substantial but a bit difficult to hold because of the size. Also the top has no stopper so it’s a pour style so you have to be careful not to pour too much out. Formula is 10/10 though.

Shower Care

For the bath and shower there are three I’ve been loving lately. Saltair has a great lineup of affordable body and hair care items. I really loved their Golden Hour Oil-Infused Nourishing Body Wash ($15). It has a pineapple + coconut scent that is sweet but isn’t too sweet. It has a gel like texture for a body wash. Moisturizing level is medium, not as hydrating as an oil, but more than a regular shower gel. I really liked the texture and formula.

Bioderma Atoderm Body Cleansing Oil ($29.99) is great for soft hydrated skin. Works wonders on dry skin and leaves the skin feeling silky smooth. I do wish the packaging was a bit more aesthetically pleasing but the formula is great. They also have it in a small 3.4 fl oz travel size which is nice to try before you buy the full size.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel ($26 to $56) is probably my most repurchased shower cream. It is very strong in the scent but I love it. It’s a cream shower product that really does hydrate the skin well without leaving any film or residue. After going through this so much we decided to start buying the Value Size 33.1 oz which comes with a pump. They also make this in a large refill pack now.

I love a good body scrub but I haven’t found anything I really love right now. Most are either a little too gritty or the oil-based scrubs leave the skin feeling too oily if that makes sense. For now I’ve been just using a good wash cloth to exfoliate.

Hand and Cuticle Care

I used up a bunch of hand creams and cuticle oils over the past few months and right now have been sticking to my tried and true. I love the Chanel La Crème Main ($55) or Le Lift La Crème Main ($70) because they have the best dry down and are not sticky. For me they have the perfect amount of moisture.

For ultra dry hands/skin I think L’Occitane is the best. I just placed an order to restock the Shea Butter Hand Cream ($13, new packaging looks great!) and the Cuticle Oil ($22).

For the cuticles I finished up the OPI ProSpa Cuticle Oil which I really loved. I will probably repurchase. Right now I am working my way through my second bottle of the Hermes Nail Oil which I really love but is almost always out of stock. Chanel’s L’Huile Camelia ($32) is another luxury option which is quite the splurge but incredibly nourishing and works. I bought the Dior Huile Abricot ($30) which has been repackaged. I used to really love it, I still like it but not as much as the OPI or Chanel because I don’t find it as hydrating.

Bronzer + Blush Lips

Valentino Beauty Eye2Cheek 03 Rosa Emozione + Satin Lipstick 100R Roman Grace

I have a mini review today featuring two things I bought recently. Valentino Beauty launched a few items in white and gold limited-edition packaging and I picked them up over the past few months. I picked up the Rosso Valentino Satin Lipstick in 100R Roman Grace ($45) and Eye2Cheek Blush + Shadow in 03 Rosa Emozione ($52). Both shades are part of the permanent lineup so if you can’t find the white packaging edition know they are still available in the classic red + gold.

Eye2Cheek Blush

It’s been a while since I’ve played with Valentino Beauty (review + swatches from several years ago when the line first launched here). Over the holiday I started playing with some of the Eye2Cheek shades in 04 and 08 which many of you really loved. I forgot how silky smooth they are! You can use them on both the eyes and cheeks, but since I have mostly pink and coral shades I’ve been using them as blush.

These have a very fine soft powdery texture. They’re so soft and silky they almost feel creamy to the touch. Finish has a very fine pearl sheen to most of them, but a few have a more noticeable shimmer. Shade 03 Rosa Emozione is a beautiful baby pink with gold shimmer. It can double as a highlighter since it’s shimmery. I think it’s beautiful!

Rosso Valentino Satin Lipstick

I bought the Rosso Valentino Satin Lipstick in 100R (shade in permanent packaging here) a few months ago while traveling and it’s the perfect neutral nude mauve pink for me. It has a satin finish so it has a little bit of a sheen to it. I think I tried this in a mini several years ago and I’m not sure why I didn’t wear it more often. I really love it now. The case is refillable for both the red and white packaging.

I did a few swatch comparisons below which I will say look a little off but I suspect it’s because my body has completely lost its tan. These rose mauve lips all look so darker on lighter skin tones because of any brown or mauve undertone they may have. On my face/lips they don’t look as dark.

Overall really love. I think the Valentino Beauty line is really under-rated and I suspect it’s because of the packaging. So may of you have told me the packaging colors are a bit clashy looking and the plastic has a cheap look and feel. I have to say I agree. The packaging is actually well-constructed and sturdy but there’s something about the plastic in red that makes it kinda unappealing. The white plastic is the same material but somehow looks more elevated. That being said the actual products perform really well.

Makeup By Mario SuperSatin Lipstick

There’s a new lipstick launch from Makeup By Mario called the SuperSatin Lipstick ($28 each). They just launched at Sephora in 18 shades and the formula is beautiful! I was fortunate to receive them in PR so I’ve swatched them all.

Formula is super creamy and opaque with full coverage. Texture is super smooth and while they’re called “satin” they pull more on the slightly creamy/glossy side in finish. They feel a little thick when you swipe them on but not heavy. Color adheres really well and has good lasting power as long as your lips don’t touch anything. Since it’s more of a traditional lipstick it’s not transferproof but I have been really impressed with the lasting power. The glossy/creamy finish makes them feel conformable on the lips and slightly hydrating. There is a subtle vanilla scent but it’s very subtle to me.

On the nails: Shade 175 Skieuse

Color range is pretty good with a mix of neutrals, reds, bolds. I do think the neutrals are a bit tricky to know how they’ll pull on your complexion until you try them. I loved the way so many of his Ultra Suede Lipsticks looked in the tube and swatched on the arm but most of them pulled a lot lighter on my lips. For me most of the new SuperSatin tones are easier for me to pull off although there are definitely a few that did not work for my skin tone.

Quick note that some of the tones looked warmer in the tube but on my lips they pulled a lot cooler/neutral. Most of you already know that I have a darker natural lip tone that almost looks purple sometimes. If you have a more pink or lighter lip color I think most of the light tones will look a lot better on you than they do on me.

South Shore is a nude pink (a bit deeper than Midtown)
Bronx Baby is a neutral-cool light brown pink

Harlem is a classic red

West Village is a fuchsia pink
Broadway is a cool-toned pink

Rockefeller is a classic bold brick red
Forest Hills is a plum brown
Central Park is a deeper brown
Downtown Girl is an even deeper brown

Overall I really like these. Formula gets a solid A+ but not all the colors work for me which is expected. I think it’s rare that anyone would love every single shade in a lipstick launch. I think they have a great range. I would love to see some of the MoistureGlow Lip Serums or Plumping Lip Colors in this kind of full coverage longer wearing formula.

My favorite is Soho. I also really like (917) and I think I can make South Shore work sometimes even though it’s pale, I may need to add a liner. According to many of you Rockefeller is THE winning shade, I didn’t swatch it for the blog but you can check it out on my Reel. I agree it’s a really beautiful classic kind of bold lip with the perfect undertone.

Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump Shimmer Glass

Tarte launched a shimmery version of their viral Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump – Shimmer Glass ($24) and as a huge fan of the formula and shimmery lips I ordered nearly all the shades to try. There are 12 shades total available at Tarte Cosmetics and 8 are available at Sephora. (I picked up all the colors except for the purple one.)

After testing the colors I will say the shimmer is quite intense but there is no texture/gritty feel. They’re very smooth just like the other Maracuja Juicy Lips. Feedback from many of you based on my Lip Swatches here are very mixed. Some of you are LIVING for these 90s shimmer vibes. Some of you absolutely hate it.

I liked some of the shades – mainly the warmer ones or bolder colors. The cooler tones ended up looking significantly more frosty on my lips (almost blue) but I suspect that is mainly because my lip tone is on the deeper side. Colors I tried:

Pearl Shimmer Glass is a white frosty pearl, this one is the most contrasted with my natural lip for an icy white finish.
Soft Pink Shimmer Glass is a beautiful pale champagne pink with some violet/blue flashes, this one pulled very cool toned on my lips.
Peach Shimmer Glass is one of my favorites, it’s a soft pale peach champagne, similar to Soft Pink, but warmer so this one was more flattering on my lips.
Sunflower Shimmer Glass is a yellow shimmer, just like a sunflower, I feel like the stock promo photos with this shade are misleading and don’t match up among all the photos. Most of the stock photos show a very pale yellow shimmer, in real life it’s a true sunny looking yellow.
Coral Shimmer Glass is a beautiful bright coral shade, but this one pulls very frosty. I think I would love it in a non-shimmer version.
Pink Shimmer Glass is a cool baby pink, also very blue on my skin tone, not flattering, but it’s so pretty in the tube.
Rose Shimmer Glass is a beautiful soft pink rose.
Rosy Copper Shimmer Glass was one of the shades in their holiday sets, this is a very pretty coppery shade.
Rosy Mauve Shimmer Glass is a cool-toned mauve, it’s cool but not too cool, I really like this color.
Berry Shimmer Glass is a stunning plum red. Reminds me of MAC Sophisto with a bit more shimmer.
Ruby Shimmer Glass is another pretty one, it’s a soft red shimmer, not too deep, not too warm, just right.

I have all of them swatched on the lips in this Reel. I photographed my favorites along with one I didn’t love (the Pink one) to show how cool-toned it is.

Overall I’ve found a few I really like and have been keeping in my purse the last few weeks. I don’t think they’ll be for everyone – the shimmer is a bit intense, but for some of the shades the shimmer is only intense if you’re in direct sunlight or studio lights.

Top 3 favorites are: Rosy Copper, Peach and Berry. I’m undecided on this level of shimmer/frost. I didn’t like them in the most recent Dior Addict Lip Maximizers or the Chantecaille Holiday lip. I think it depends on the color and how the tones pull on your complexion.

This was a very basic year for me in skincare. I pretty much stuck with my tried and true staples. This year I hope to be a little more adventurous.

Best Spot Treatment: Bliss Clear Genius Acne Gel (Andrew loves this too, it’s strong enough to work as a good acid acne spot treatment but doesn’t leave red marks on the skin)

Best Smoothing/Resurfacing Treatment: Sunday Riley Good Genes

Best Cleanser Splurge: Chanel Sublimage L’Huile Cleansing Oil (feels so soft and smooth, this is the one I repurchase over and over again)

Best Thing To Keep Skin Clear/Smooth: Eve Lom Muslin Cloths (any muslin cloth will work) but using this helps ensure all the dirt, oil and any cleanser residue are removed

Best Body Products: Chanel L’Huile is the best body oil I’ve tried (I love Vanille) and the Prequel Barrier Therapy Skin Protectant Body Cream has been a life saver for dry skin flare ups.

Best New Try: Botox! I did it for the first time in May and I really loved the results. We went to @marissathepa in Boca Raton (she’s great!) I got 40 units for the first time and it lasted for a good 3.5 months. I fully intended to do it again but didn’t plan far enough in advance and when we were in Miami in December they were fully booked. Debating whether to find someone local or wait until we’re back (I think I’m going to wait).

Best Hair Tool: ghd Platinum+ Styler is my go-to for smooth sleek hair or soft waves. I love this one because it turns off automatically, it’s set to a single temperature, plates have sensors to maintain a constant temperature, the edges of the plates don’t touch the skin so I never burn myself with this. Most Used Hair Care: Oribe Gold Lust Shampoo + Conditioner – I use these so much I ended up buying the liter pump bottles and have since repurchased the liter refills, definitely a huge OUCH to the wallet, but the formulas are my favorite

Essential Hair Styling Product: R&Co Dart Stick for my baby flyaways as my hair is going through regrowth this year, I usually order from Neimans or Amazon, it’s small enough to keep in my purse.

Miscellaneous

Best Launch of the Year: Chanel Code Couleur Mirrors, Nail Files, Brush Sets were so fun, I wish I had bought all of the colors, I hope they do something like this again! These sold out almost instantly, review here.

Most Worn Polish: Olive and June Quick Dry Nail Polish in Sandy (this is the best sheer baby pink that dries quickly and the one that got the most compliments this year). Many shades are available at Target but it seems this one is only available at Olive and June.
