Diptyque Rosa Mundi Candle 2017 Launch

January 18, 2017

Diptyque Rosa Mundi Candle Review | The Beauty Look Book

It’s a tradition for Diptyque to launch a special limited-edition rose-themed candle for Valentine’s Day every year and this year they’ve brought back Rosa Mundi. It comes in a Standard Candle ($68 for 6.5 oz), a Mini Candle ($35 for 2.4 oz) and a Scented Oval ($50). I look forward to each release for the whimsical designs of the jars as they create something beautiful and special every year. Rosa Mundi was last launched in 2014 in a white glass jar and pink tinted wax. This particular year Diptyque partnered with Antoinette Poisson, a creator and restorer of domino paper. The design has a thick label sticker as the exterior. As one who is usually really skeptical about sticker labels in general I have to say that I was pleased with the quality and placement of the labels. They are placed firmly on the jar without any visible bubbles and the paper feels like a high quality thick texture almost like wall paper.

Close up below of the mini versus standard. For those not familiar with Diptyque sizing you can see all the details like burn time and comparison for them in this post here. My personal candle care tips in this post here.

For those new to Rosa Mundi, this year’s is similar to previous launches (it has been launched twice before). It has excellent throw and the scent will fill up the rooms in my home within minutes just from opening the box. This one has a mix of damascena, the damask rose, and centifolia, the May rose. Additional notes include currant, bergamot, lychee and geranium. To me it smells like a young bright sweet rose. It’s very girly and I absolutely adore it. I haven’t kept every single used up candle jar I’ve burned although I do try my best to keep the special edition jars. I like to recycle them and keep them to store makeup brushes, pens, flowers, Q-tips, mini perfumes, rollerball perfumes, tiny skincare samples – basically anything. For those who just started getting into or noticing Diptyque, previous Valentine’s Day candles I have reviewed:

  • 2014 Rosa Mundi shown below (reviewed here)
  • 2015 Rosafolia (review here)
  • 2016 Rosaviola (reviewed here)

Bottom line love. By the time this post is going live I’ve already burned through a mini one. As always with these I recommend going with the bigger one even though they are more expensive. The recycle options are more versatile versus the minis. If you’re looking for a way to treat yourself either of these are great options. For those curious about the scented ovals – I’ve been gifted a few over the past years. They make lovely decorative pieces but the scent doesn’t last quite as long as I had hoped. They are also fragile – we have docile animals and they’ve knocked over quite a few things and the ovals did not survive the fall. If you have carpet they probably won’t break.

I bought mine from Nordstrom. You can also find the Rosa Mundi at Neiman Marcus, Space NK, Barneys New York, Selfridges, and Diptyque. Have you tried this one yet? If not do you have a favorite rose candle?

It sounds and looks lovely! Do you know if the scent is likely/similar to their perfume eau rose (which I adore) since it has some similar notes?

I always adore your presentation / home decor style.

Hi Freya – I don’t have Eau Rose, I smelled it years ago but cannot remember what it smells like! Sorry 🙁

      I die for Diptyque packaging!

  • Alix January 18, 2017 at 8:19 am

Hmm, I’m conflicted now! You review gives high marks to the paper decor of the candle, but reviews on Nordstrom claim the paper was so thin/cheap the buyers returned them. Not available in-store where I live, so I’d have to take a chance ordering online. Thoughts?

    • BeautyLookBook January 18, 2017 at 11:26 am

Hi Alix – I think “cheap” is a bit harsh but I can definitely see that it would be off-putting to some. I actually really hate it when brands stick on sticker adhesive labels instead of making the design part of the packaging like into the glass or embossing the plastic. This one was not a deal breaker for me. Still it is a paper adhesive so it’s not going to be as sturdy as regular glass or a lacquered label if that makes sense. Also being paper it is going to be prone to smudges if you touch it with dirty fingers.

If you are able to order sight unseen from Nordstrom – they have a great return policy if that helps. I know it can be a hassle if you end up not liking it. Maybe google for some other blog reviews?

Ordered mine online through Nordstrom and received yesterday. I personally preferred Rosamundi to past fragrances, so I was thrilled to see this one come back. My favorite candle design, however, was Olympia Le Tan. This year’s is very pretty though. As always, this Diptyque addict is sold! 🙂

    • BeautyLookBook January 18, 2017 at 11:22 am

Hi Amy! Glad one of your favorites is back and glad to hear that you are also a Diptyque addict!! On the design I think Rosaviola x Olympia Le Tan was definitely the BEST so far!

  • Nikoleta January 18, 2017 at 9:38 am

Definitely I wanna order these candles, they look amazing!

How often do you burn your Diptyque candles? I find that the scent stays in the air even a few hours after I stop burning it. I live in a small-ish apartment so if I burn it for more than 1-2 hours, the smell can get quite overwhelming. I ordered this right away on the day it launched, LOVE!

    • BeautyLookBook January 18, 2017 at 11:21 am

Hi Sheila, I burn some kind of candle almost everyday. Before it used to be almost always Diptyque but these days I mix it up with others like Byredo, Henri Bendel, Elizabeth and James, Antica Farmacista etc. I can see how some smells can be overwhelming in a small apartment! The minis have less throw in my experience.

I’m literally in love with the packaging, I need this candle in my life.

My fave was always Geranium Rosa by Diptyque, but I’m looking forward to acquiring this one! Still sore about missing out on rosaviola!

Awww … I know how that feels, I missed out on that pretty Rose Duet years ago!

  • Cadie Campbell January 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

After reading this post I went to my local diptyque (upper east side NYC), picked one up and it’s such an amazing rose scent! Thanks for the recommendation!

The Rosamundi scent equals pure joy 🙂

  • msh111 January 22, 2017 at 3:05 am

I am saving my pennies for this candle. I saw it at Nordstrom last week but the scent wasn’t that strong- perhaps because it was a demo and had been on display. I do know however is that the magic which is Dyptique is released once you’ve burned the first two hours as suggested by Dyptique as the scent is pure Love!
Sabrina your site has me addicted to Dyptique candles. My first was Baies which I have re-bought several times, then I tried Ambre, the three Christmas scents, and Oud, which I adore! I read your review of Oud a few years ago and its scent is truly wonderful. I purchased directly from Dyptique in November and received a lovely GWP with a Gardenia & Santal votive included as well as a sample of a perfume I have been using sparingly – Phyto-something lol.
I have Pomander on the way to me in the mail and am hoping it will delivered today to burn over the weekend.
I must agree with you in the larger standard size candle is the best choice to purchase as that size guarantees a wide throw. I have purchased the smaller size as well as the votive but none compare to the standard size as even though it costs more, it’s a better value in my opinion.
Next on my list to try are Vanille, Nosetier, and Lavender. I prefer spicy scents but Baies is truly a favorite.
Thanks for this review! I love the label on this candle as well.

Hi msh111 – so glad to hear you’ve found some Diptyque loves, I agree Baies is the BEST!!!!

    ooooo those look lovely!

Do you think this jar will be easy to clean out after it’s used up? I love the design of the paper but have concerns of either getting it dirty when I touch it or when at the end of it’s life I want to clean the jar and reuse it for brushes. Not sure if the paper will hold up? Thoughts?

    • BeautyLookBook January 25, 2017 at 6:35 pm

Hi! I’ve burned through one but haven’t attempted to clean it. It’s on my to-do list and I’ll report back here this weekend 🙂

      • shyusized January 26, 2017 at 6:16 am

That would be awesome! Thank you 🙂

      • shyusized January 31, 2017 at 6:16 am

Hi! Just wondering if you’ve had time to clean the jar out yet/what’s your thought on that?

      • Aviva A February 8, 2017 at 7:53 am

        Hi Sabrina,
have you had any luck cleaning your candle out? I want to purchase one, but I am worried the label will look worn and dirty once I am finished!

See response at top of this thread 🙂

  • Daniela January 26, 2017 at 12:32 pm

Thanks for the review and the beautiful pics – as always. I just ordered the standard size and some lining paper.
Today I had the chance to visit the new Berlin boutique. Beautiful setting, nice and friendly staff. I bought the exclusive Berlin-candle. It is lime-blossom, which is typical for Berlin in spring, and is lightly green. I’m really looking forward to burn this in a couple of weeks as soon as I have burned the christmas ones.

  • shyusized February 7, 2017 at 8:02 am

Hi! Just wanted to check in and see if you were able to try to clean the jar yet and how it went with the paper? Thanks!

    • BeautyLookBook February 8, 2017 at 8:43 am

Cleaning went fine without issue. I did get water on it to test how durable it was, a little bit won’t hurt but to be safe I just wouldn’t soak the exterior in water. If you’re cleaning only get water on the inside. Mine had a really clean burn so as long as you burn it properly you should be fine recycling!

Awesome thank you! This is very helpful 🙂
