Tom Ford Nude Dip Eye Color Quad | Fall 2014

September 2, 2014

Tom Ford Nude Dip Eye Color Quad ($79 for .21 oz/6 g, made in Italy) is a stunning palette of shimmery pearlized neutrals. The colors are suitable for everyday and also for evening. I find the color combination and texture pure genius. I think The Non-Blonde put it perfectly when she described the finish as “modern semi-metallics.” Café Makeup also has a really lovely review. The shadows are very smooth but they have a unique texture which gives each color dimension. The colors are shimmery but in a super wearable way. This is a quad that is a bit hard to track down. It sold out online within a few days so I ordered mine over the phone.

Some have asked me if I think this really is a must-have or if I thought it would just be a must-have for die hard Tom Ford fans. Based on my testing and counter visits, I haven’t loved all of the Tom Ford quads. Many of the palettes have this high shine glitter which I’m not super comfortable pulling off. I purchased a couple when the line initially launched and ended up selling them used because I couldn’t wear the glitter. More recent quad releases with Orchid Haze and Seductive Rose have given us more options with texture and more shimmer that I find easier to wear for the conservative makeup lover. Nude Dip falls into the category of love. It has a similar texture to the limited-edition Enchanted Quad from last fall (now discontinued). So yes, I do think Nude Dip is a must-have for the season.

The colors in Nude Dip are timeless neutrals. Each color layers beautifully over each other. In many softer light neutral quads, you end up getting at least 2-3 shades that look exactly the same once applied on the skin. With Nude Dip, each color has enough variation to give a good layered look. There is a soft champagne, a medium peach, a soft taupe grey and a satiny brown.

On my eyes it pulls more neutral and slightly cool. On fairer skins or those with pink undertones this will pull more neutral-warm. You can see it pulls warm on The Non-Blonde and more neutral on Café Makeup. Each color is multi-dimensional with different colored pearl pigments. In some light you will see more cool-tones due to the reflection. In others you’ll see more of the base which is warmer.

Close ups:

Some swatched comparisons: Chanel Tisse Mademoiselle is cooler and more subtle, Tom Ford Enchanted (discontinued) is significantly cooler and more pink, Dior Iridescent Leather (discontinued) has been added for another comparison.

Nude Dip is pure love. It’s easy to wear with a nice pearlized texture which adds dimension to the eyes without being too frosty. I purchased mine from a Saks store over the phone. It’s currently sold out online in the US, but keep checking Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus and Tom Ford – they might restock.  Update – thanks to my readers for letting me know as of 8:00 PM PST it’s up online at Nordstrom! Second update at 9:25 PM, sold out online. As of May 2015, it’s been re-introduced and added to the permanent lineup.

Did you pick up Nude Dip? What did you think? You can find it at select Tom Ford counters. Online at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Sephora.

  • This looks VERRRY pretty on you Sabrina! I love your application and am going to try that placement when I get mine (mine should be here by end of week!!!)

I was extremely worried about the shimmer when I first saw it. But I had the SA apply it and I was very pleasantly surprised. It definitely isn't matte – but it is much more subtle and elegant than I thought it would be. It is like a glow almost. One of my favorite aspects of this quad is that the colors are so blendable. I'm a blending novice and even I could make the color transitions look seamless when I played around with it in store.

    • Thank you! Glad you liked it too 🙂 I agree blending it is very easy 🙂 It's a nice one to mix with a matte palette like the Urban Decay Naked Basics (1 or 2).

I have this and love it as well. It is gorgeous. I love your eye swatch – very tastefully done. What brush are you using to apply it Sabrina? This and the new Rouge Bunny Rouge palette (which I have ordered) are the two must have eye shadow products of the season.

    • Hi Jo! I use a few different brushes, for this one I used Tom Ford's Eyeshadow Brush (the large fluffy one) for the all over shades, Chanel #19 (black one) for the darker shades to blend and the Laura Mercier's Smudge brush for the darkest shade to pack on the lash line. I then used MAC 217 to blend.

  • Looks great on you Sabrina. To me shades of Nude Dip is better than Enchanted (then again I am not really fond of plum undertones). I love Nude Dip. I could not stop taking pictures of it for my post. It changes and shimmers so beautifully under the sun. Love! One can say it is frosty but it is not. I agree that it has a semi metallic finish with micro adult shimmer in it. Over all any TF connoisseur should have Nude Dip Quad in their collection (like She Wolf!). XO 🙂

    • BTW, preview of Tom Ford collection for the holidays is out. Just reposted on Instagram. 6 new matte lipsticks and looks like 2 new cream eye shadows. 🙂 XO

  • So lovely, I think your review clinched it for me! Just called my local counter here in Toronto, Canada, the collection launches here Sept. 11th…they have an extensive wait list already and she told me that if you prepay then you're have a guarantee you'll receive one….LOL She also mentioned they have 2 shipments coming in though she can't confirm the number of quads they'll receive.

    Cheers, Lisa

    • I hope you can get your hands on one!

  • So easy to wear. The shimmer is so subtle and elegant even on older eyes. Enchanted remains my favourite but this is a very close second and I am delighted with mine. Susan, London.

    Dear Sabrina,
Thank you for the long awaited post! As anticipated, it looks gorgeous on you and I really love the way you use it on your lids — only wish you would do a tutorial even if it's just screen shots with "step 1, step 2, etc" listed. Nude Dip looks lovely on you — so much so that I wonder if you bought yourself a back up – lol!

Your past TF palettes that you sold…did you have a blog sale that I somehow missed? I would have loved to have purchased them from you!
Thanks for the lovely post and the wonderful swatches.

I was wondering, do you find that as a warm toned person cooler toned shadows work better for you? Just curious as we have similar coloring and I get more compliments when I wear cooler toned shadows.

    Thanks, again!

    • Hi Ava, glad you liked the post! At this time I don't have extra time to do tutorials. Each post takes me anywhere from 2-4 hours to complete for photographing, editing and writing. This doesn't even cover review/testing time.

I did have a blog sale a couple years ago. It was a total disruption to my life, I got rid of a lot of older things to other makeup lovers, but I had to take two days off work and shipped almost 100 packages. It was pure insanity and not something I ever want to do again, lol.

I don't think there is a right or wrong for cool vs warm. I actually prefer warmer shades or neutral ones, but it really depends on the color.

  • This is amazing! Completely love all the shades, they all look lovely on you. Will have to have a good look at these, great post! x

  • Wow, I'm so surprised at how similar it is to Mademoiselle in your swatches. I've had the hardest time with the texture of the new Chanel quads – Mademoiselle looks muddy on me and doesn't apply smooth. Could I trouble you to share if the texture is similar to Nude Dip? My wallet would appreciate your feedback 🙂 I'm a sucker for neutrals!

    • Hmmm, on my screen Mademoiselle looks completely different from Nude Dip, although I do see some similarities in a couple of the shades.

Nude Dip is way better. I suspect Mademoiselle might be a color that won't show up well on medium to darker skintones. I also need a dewy base underneath and start with the medium colors first (rather than layer from light to dark).

The texture of Nude Dip is way more pigmented and textured but not chunky if that makes sense. If you can track down Nude Dip, I highly recommend it.

  • Sabrina, this is so pretty on you! I've been on the fence with this palette but now I think I'll get it. I do love neutrals and though I'm not usually into too shimmery a shadow I am glad to know you think it's more subtle. You think it's must have so I am going to get it. Great review as always!

  • HI Sabrina,

The colors in Tom Ford Nude Dip look stunning on your arm swatches and in the look you created! The shades here wear so well on you!

I am surprised at how much shine Tom Ford has packed into these shades — seems almost to the extent of Urban Decay shadows. I guess the brand always has a way to make things pop 🙂

  • I absolutely love my 'Enchanted' and use it often. I am pale/cool toned with light brown eyes…not sure if 'Nude Dip' would suit me. I do love a soft neutral look though and it seems these limited quads are a buttery quality and much nicer than the standard issue palettes. Guess I can hunt one and see if it works on me. 🙂

  • So gorgeous! I am looking to invest in my first Tom Ford eye quad after being amazed at their product quality and I think this will one will be it. Thank you for the review and swatches!

    • I hope you can track one down, it's really lovely!

  • So, how many nude palettes does a woman need in her stash? In the case of Nude Dip, you need at least this one 🙂 I received my Nude Dip almost two weeks ago (Big thanks to Neiman Marcus San Francisco!) and have really enjoyed exploring its possibilities. Yes, most women probably do have similar colors, but Nude Dip's texture, finish, and depth are hard to beat. The gleam of modern metallics as opposed to the glitter and frost we've seen elsewhere, made this a must have for me. Although I'm 70, my eyes have aged well and so I can still wear shimmer when grounded with a matte shade. I've been using TF's Cocoa Mirage and the two compliment each other beautifully. Whether I'm doing a more contoured, sculpted look or going for a gradation of color similar to Sabrina's look, Nude Dip is simply stunning. Even though this year has seen some extraordinary eyeshadows collections, Nude Dip is a real stand out.

    • As usual so well put Eileen! What a great idea to combine it with Cocoa Mirage, I will have to try that this weekend 🙂 It sounds really lovely!

  • I want Nude Dip so badly! I have my name on a wait list at Holt Renfrew (I'm no. 72 and the SA told me they're only getting 22 palettes so far!). I'm not holding my breath, but hey, I tried!

  • Beautiful palette! I have to get this.

I just checked nordstrom and they have it online finally. I'm glad I was able to get one. Thanks for your great swatches and comparisons. They are great as always!

    • Bought mine from Selfridges last nite.

  • This literally just launched on Nordstrom's website….. RUN!!! (I have been stalking the site for weeks!!! **nude palette lover**

  • It sold out already on nordstrom's website

    • Thx for letting me know, that was fast!

  • I thought the Chanel Tissé Mademoiselle was beautiful until I saw this…

  • That look absolutely gorgeous….I think I need to track that one down 🙂

  • Just got mine yesterday! I'm so excited to start using it, I just have to take tons of photos first haha.

It's still available from Harrods and they ship all over Europe, to the US and Australia to name a few. It's pretty expensive there though, they go for over 100usd.

  • Heads up, it pops back periodically on Nordstrom. Keep refreshing. I managed to snag one today because of it.

I got it! So pleased I managed to catch it!

I was not lucky enough to find Tom Ford's nude dip online and called pretty much every store that possibly had it in stock with no luck.

I just did live chat with a Neiman Marcus associate and she said that it is completely sold out storewide, but there is a shipment coming in on 9/16/14 and she let me pre-order online with free s/h.

I read that NM has been stocking it online sporadically but it always sells out super fast. So if you are still looking for one, I suggest you live chat with a NM associate. I do not know how many they have available, so I would hurry.

Hi Sabrina! Thanks for the review. I found that the Nude Dip is very similar to Chanel Poesie. ..what do you think? I actually prefer to Nude Dip a tad more.

    Dear Sabrina,

Thank you so much for your wonderful swatches and review!
I had to preorder the whole fall collection and wait because here it wasn't sold before the VFNO. So I was admiring your photos until I was finally able to get my hands on it. Now that I have it, I absolutely love this palette!!! I think you are totally right – it is a must have and I love the look you created with it.
    Many greetings from Germany
    xxx Stephanie

P.S. By the way – the Chanel nail polish "Sweet Star" from VFNO is just as stunning as "Black Cherry" from Tom Ford – it was a very successfull VFNO for me 😉

  • What a gorgeous palette. This is definitely going on my wishlist! Thanks for the beautiful swatches. 🙂
