Are You On Twitter?

August 8, 2011
Good morning readers!  After a few recent e-mails from readers discussing something that was soon to be released, I realized not all of my readers are social media users. I had assumed one of my readers had seen news of upcoming releases because the info had been tweeted by others. After a few discussions, I then realized not everyone is on Twitter. Oops! So I want to ask my readers, are you on Twitter? I am and my twitter account is @BeautyLookBook which you can see below (my most recent Tweet is actually a re-tweet of Paul & Joe Beaute’s picture of their new Autumn Collection at Bergdorfs).

For the longest time, I had an inactive Twitter account because I did not know how to use it. I had to ask Josie and Karla for Tweet help because I didn’t know what all these acronyms stood for. I had resisted for a long time for a slew of reasons: I don’t have time, I can’t figure out what Tweets are, how will I manage all this noise?

It’s all still a learning process. As many have noted, the biggest challenge is how to scan for the relevant information. I’m more of a passive follower than active Tweeter. I check my blog reads and Twitter feed via my iPhone every few hours while at work during the week and given my schedule I just can’t always manage it during the day during a busy work week. Here are some of the reasons why you should join Twitter!
  • You discover new things: I’ve discovered new blogs and vlogs. People I follow will often re-tweet content they find interesting to spread the word. I find these extremely helpful (most of the time). I’ve also discovered new blogs from people following me and tweeting interesting news.
  • You can keep track of what’s up and coming: I’ve learned new things from various store or brand Tweets such as upcoming releases, events and apperances.
  • Meet new people: There are brand managers, editors, artists, designers, company founders on Twitter. It’s interesting to read what they are loving right now!
  • Track the brands you love: If you are a Sprinkles Cupcakes fan like me, you can find out where their SprinklesMobile is headed next by following them on Twitter @sprinklesmobile!
  • Get advice fast: Several months ago, my dog ate my NARS Angelika Multiple and I freaked (after all, a NARS multiple is like the equivalent of maybe 4 full sized lipsticks?). I called the vet who assured me it was ok as long as she didn’t eat any of the plastic. Still in major panic mode while on the phone, I tweeted this to see if anyone else had a dog who ate their makeup. Sure enough people tweeted me back to reassure me I had no need to worry.

I don't like Twitter because for all the gems of knowledge you get, you have to sort through soooo much. Plus it reinforces the trend toward fragmented thought, which I really detest.

  • I don't use Twitter because I feel like I'm already glued to my phone enough–I don't wear a watch, so it is my timepiece, and I also usually send and receive a few texts a day. I don't want to be looking at my phone much more than I already do…I have considered signing up and just checking it on my netbook though. I would prefer to read blog posts, articles, and look at swatches on a larger screen.

  • Twitter really is such a valuable resource! You get up to the minute updates on so many wonderful things. Twitter is often the first place I hear of not only beauty related tidbits, but also breaking news around the world. I've developed closer bonds with so many of my fellow bloggers and others around the world through our instant communication!

I'm so glad you found my tweet amusing πŸ˜‰ Luckily that didn't turn into as big a mess as I'd imagined!

  • At first, I also didn't know how to operate twitter. However I've come to find this as an extremely useful tool to communicate with fellow beauty bloggers and enthusiasts. A lot of the time people would do quick tweets about new collection release dates or snap images of what they see at the counters. These types of tweets are invaluable since most bloggers will not write an entire post on something they just discovered.

I have one, but I don't use it. I never check it either. And if I want to find a certain comment someone made, it's hard to find it. I personally find Twitter to be a headache and a pain.

  • Hi, Sabrina! Long time, no post!

I'm a non-Twitterer, as well … I already spend far too much time on FB, and that's pretty much all I need in order to keep up with who/what I want. Plus, how many social networks does the average Joe like me need?

    Just me & my $0.02.

I tried to follow you on Twitter, but seems your tweets are locked.

  • I had a Twitter account for a long time but never used it and only recently began reading and posting a bit. It's fun to take a look during my breaks at work and see what kind of chatter is going on. It's a great way to keep up with my favorite bloggers' latest posts. I have too many in my Google Reader and don't check it as often πŸ™‚

  • Love it for keeping in touch with people who share my interest, chat with Make-Up Artist, learn great tips and find out latest news in the beauty industry.
I also like chatting about films/books/travelling etc occasionally.

No I don't use twitter because I miss the days when people only had home phones so I actually had an excuse to not answer–not just that I was wanting to be left alone. I like my time to detach and twitter is just too much connection for me. Not to mention how very misconstrued communication can become via electronic devices. I miss the old days of having a real conversation with someone–twitter is just another chance to chip away at the art of conversation πŸ™

I have to carry a phone with me at work and I've found it makes it more the norm for my brain to develop choppy thought patterns and I lose my productivity. In my free time I'd prefer to work my brain back into (something) functional (high hopes for that one).

  • Amy

I follow other peoples' twitter accounts on my Google Reader, but don't have an account myself. Thank you for the suggestions of who to follow! I've added them now as well. Makeup and beauty themed posts are overtaking my feed…and I couldn't be happier about it!

  • I adore Twitter. It's the quickest way to find out information about new makeup. I resisted for a long time because I honestly thought it was all celebrity gossip. LOL I still don't follow Aston Kutcher even though he's got a cute little hiney.

But the interaction between bloggers and cosmetic ethusiasts just makes my day. I love talking to like minded people, as we all do.

The bloggers I've met on Twitter, many of them in this thread, have all been so helpful with different issues, blogs, photography, locating an item. If I'm out running errands all day, I sometimes feel like I miss a lot not talking to my tweeps.

  • I have 2 Twitter accounts, @daly_beauty for my blog & fun tweeting, and business account that is so busy I needed to take a break. Nice to see you finding your way around Twitter! I did all the Social Media training re Twitter & Facebook for my office and it really is fun and easy once you figure it out πŸ™‚

  • I have a Twitter account – it is fun and it helps me to keep up with news.
I am not so much into FB… have it, use it but like Twitter much more.

  • Eileen

I find that most B-e-a-U-t-Y tweets are just marketing ploys like so-called exclusives and limited editions. They're designed to stir up mass interest and "lemmings" so that we rush out to buy so that we feel like we're in, cool, hip, or whatever. Besides the excruciatingly obvious marketing take-over of Twitter, I basically dislike disjointed, fragmented, self-serving, repetitious bites of information tossed out in an inpersonal voice. Twitter's for the birds πŸ˜›

  • I have an account but I really use it to post my latest blog entry. I just learned what #FF means…I'm sure there's a whole world of acronyms I need to learn but I feel too old to catch up. The benefit of Twitter – it appeals to my A.D.D.

  • Yes I am a Twitter uses but answered other since I maybe remember to log in once every few month I answered other.

  • So after you found out the dog was okay…how peeved were you about the multiple?

  • Wow! Thank you everyone for voting and sharing your thoughts on Twitter!

Anonymous – I also find it a challenge to sort through all the randomness. It's still fun once you get used to it.

Agmini – LOL. Tweets on the phone are a tough one. I stopped wearing a watch as well and use my iPhone for time πŸ™‚

PerilouslyPale – I heart your tweets πŸ™‚ Funny we both had a lag time from blogging to telling others.

Kristie – Thank you for pointing out the value of quick tweets! So true.

LipstickChick – Oh my! Long time no chat – lol, I remember our discussion on Twitter long ago. I don't spend a lot of time on FB, but I can see how too much social networking can be an overload.

    Anon-Louise – I've unlocked them now πŸ™‚

Makeup Magpie – I'm so glad you're on Twitter, I don't want to miss anything you write about!

  • Marina – thank you for your support πŸ™‚ I love discovering new artists and industry insiders as well.

Sophia1105 – You bring up very good points. Technology can sometimes be annoying. I too sometimes wish I could be "unreachable" at certain times. I do agree the art of conversation and communication is being lost, but at the same time it allows me to connect with so many people I would have never been able to meet (so to speak) before. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

Amy – thank you for stopping by πŸ™‚ I'm glad you like my posts, feedback is always appreciated.

Polarbelle – this made me smile πŸ™‚ Hugs!!!

Daly Beauty – interesting that you're able to manage 2 twitter accounts! I can barely manage 1, lol!

Andreea – Yes, twitter is fun πŸ™‚ thanks for stopping by.

Lexi, Heidi and Eileen – thank you for sharing your thoughts. I need to remind myself not to get carried away with Twitter. I forget that not everyone is on Twitter (as the survey results show). I will try to keep that in mind and be sure that I don't forget to share information through other media.

Randy Jackson – I was more "peeved" at myself for being so dumb to leave makeup on the floor where my dog (who eats everything) could get to it. If I had human kids (instead of pet kids) then I'd be classified as an unfit parent. So I suppose it's a good thing I don't have kids πŸ™‚ I was sad about the multiple (RIP) but I have others to keep me busy.

  • DRTVrMoi

I opened a Twitter account to support a friend. Within a week, I was bored by this time-sucker. I have a Facebook alias that I use for contests & coupons. I'm committed to a streamlined life and social media will not have a place there.

  • I love Twitter because my favourite beauty bloggers will tweet everytime the have a new post up and that saves me alot of time! especially when I'm on the go: Twitter automatically opens a mobile version of the site, saving me alot of time πŸ™‚

That aside, hello Sabrina! I enjoyed your blog so much, but this is the first time I've commented >_< Cheers!

  • i love twitter – i think it really complements a blog, because i find out a little more about other blogger and it's the 2nd fastest way to find out about upcoming collections and also touch base with designers/magazines/fav websites. it must've been super *exciting* seeing P&J re-tweet your picture =DDD last week the editor of australia Marie Claire asked responded to a tweet and i though it was lovely she was so interactive with her readers and i won a designer handbag just for following australian Instyle magazine. Ahhh the magic of twitter x
