I swatched all of the new Aerin Beauty Rose Balm Lipsticks a couple of days ago here. Today I’ll show you my picks along with lip swatches. Aerin Beauty Rose Balm Lipsticks ($30 each for 0.14 oz/4g). These are buildable lipsticks with a moisturizing feel. There is a very soft rose scent which I find similar to the Rose Hand and Body Cream. It’s a sweet soft rose that fades after a few minutes. For reference it’s not as strong as the rose scent in some Chanel lipsticks. The Rose Balm Lipsticks have a soft shine to them which makes them look like a shiny balm but they have the pigment of a lipstick (meaning more coverage on the lips than the MAC Lustre formula). Coverage is quite good from medium to full coverage. They apply better on the lips versus the hand or arms. You do need a smooth lip to apply. If you have any flakies, I recommend prepping your lips with a balm first for about 5 minutes or so to smooth them out. Since the colors adhere well to the lips they can enhance anything that is chapped or peeling.
I tried Poppy in store and photographed it on the lips before it faded. I purchased Coral Sand, Liebling, Pretty and Wild Lilac for myself. I bought Geranium for my mother as a Valentine’s Day gift so it is not swatched below.
Swatches without flash:
Swatches with flash highlight the shine factor:
Close ups and lip swatches shown below of each shade I bought. Here is Poppy which I tested in store but did not purchase. If I remember correctly Poppy may have had a tiny bit of shimmer in the tube but on the lips the shimmer does not show up.
Coral Sand is a fresh peachy shade. The Aerin rep in San Francisco was wearing this color and it brightened her whole face (she had light skin and dark brown hair). I think this one would be flattering on almost anyone. It’s the perfect shade of peach for the transition into spring.
Liebling is a cool mauve. It looks darker in the tube than it applies on the lips. On me it pulled very blue-toned due to my olive skin. I saw it on some cooler-toned lighter skinned women at the counter and it looked amazing on them. I like this one but it’s a bit too cool-toned for my taste – but I usually have a hard time wearing anything mauve on the lips.
Pretty is the perfect pink in my mind. It’s a neutral soft pink that doesn’t wash out the skin. This one is my favorite out of the collection.
Wild Lilac is a dark vampy wine color in the tube. Similar to Clinique’s classic Black Honey, this translates into a brighter wine on the lips. On me it pulls cool-toned however on the hands it swatched more red. The color on your lips will probably depend on your skintone. I swiped it twice a bit unevenly before I photographed it. If I had pressed my lips together to blend a bit it wouldn’t have been quite as blotchy.
Geranium is a stunning brighter rose pink cream. It’s the kind of color my mother loves. She’s a loyal Estee Lauder and Chanel fan and likes anything bright. I thought this new lipstick would be right up her alley.
One last photo:
Overall thumbs up. If you’re an Estee Lauder fan you will love these as well. The overall feel of Aerin’s line is like an updated modern version of Estee Lauder. My heart still belongs to Chanel, Tom Ford and Edward Bess for lipsticks, but Aerin’s Rose Balm Lipsticks are close behind as a new favorite. My must-have shade after testing these is Pretty although Perfect Nude is still calling my name. See all the lip colors swatched in this post.
The latest from Aerin Beauty includes 10 new shades of Rose Balm Lipstick ($30 each for 0.14 oz/4g). I’ve been impressed with the Aerin Beauty lipsticks but the new Rose Balm formula takes lipsticks to a whole new level. These are moisturizing, full pigment, cream colors with a natural sheen. For a slightly glossy-finish lipstick these are long lasting and have surprisingly good coverage. These come in a heavy weight gold tube. The packaging is sleek and has a simple classic design.
I played with these a couple weeks ago when I was in San Francisco and came home with Liebling (a cool rose). Last week I purchased a few more shades and have been thrilled with each color. It’s amazing that every single one of the colors is beautiful and naturally flattering. I will have lip swatches up this weekend of the colors I bought. For now here are all the shades hand swatched. I have my eye on the Perfect Nude shade because it really is a perfect nude. In my attempt to try colors I don’t usually go for, I skipped it for now.
Instore lighting, sorry for the bad quality, this was taken with my iPhone. Top Row: Whisper, Lady Beige, Cabana, Coral Sand, Pretty. Bottom Row: Liebling, Geranium, Perfect Nude, Poppy and Wild Lilac.
The shades described:
Whisper is a pale pink that has a slight sheen to it
Lady Beige is a transparent but pigmented flesh nude
Cabana is a peachy nude
Coral Sand is a coral peach
Pretty is the perfect natural pink
Liebling is a cool rose pink (this is the only one that has a slight hint of shimmer)
Geranium is a bright pink rose
Perfect Nude is a neutral cool nude pink
Poppy is a rose warm poppy shade
Wild Lilac is a cool wine-plum
Shades photographed at different angles. These were taken in the evening. Some of the photographs make the colors look shimmery but it’s really just the sheen/glossy finish that is reflecting.
I hope you find these swatches helpful if you don’t have an Aerin counter near you. Aerin Rose Balm Lipsticks are $30 each. You can find them at Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus and all Aerin Beauty counters now.
MAC released two new vibrant classic reds for their Viva Glam line with Rihanna. There is a Viva Glam Rihanna Lipstick ($16 for 3g / 0.1 US oz) and a Lipglass ($15 for 4.8 g / 0.17 US oz). The colors are bold with rich pigment. I rarely wear reds but could not resist these two. I’ve missed out on previous limited-edition Viva Glam shades, I did not want to miss out again.
The Viva Glam Rihanna Lipstick is a frost formula. It’s described as a blue-red but on me goes on much warmer without blue tones. It has a metallic warm red frost but on the lips it doesn’t appear too frosty like some MAC Frost formula lipsticks can. It’s a very pigmented bright red color – pigmented enough to cover the entire lip and show up true-to-tube on darker-toned lips. It’s a striking shade – something I’m not brave enough to wear everyday or to the office, although it’s a classic enough shade that I think one can.
The Viva Glam Rihanna Lipglass is a semi-sheer hot pink red infused with tiny red and fuschia micro sparkles. The base is a bit sheerish but layering with a brush will increase the pigment. When worn alone, it’s a bit transparent so you can see a bit of the lip underneath. When layered over lipsticks it adds sparkle and shine.
Both the lipstick and lipglass versions are fairly similar in color, they are almost an exact match. The lipglass flashes a bit more blueish due to the cool-toned sparkles. Swatches side by side:
I pulled a few other darker colors I have to compare. Most of my lipsticks are neutrals or peachy colors. As you can see the darker ones I have are still more on the neutral side. Below shown is MAC Viva Glam IV Lipstick, MAC Viva Glam VI Lipstick and Lipglass, MAC Astral Cremesheen Glass (discontinued), Chanel Pink Pulsion Glossimer (discontinued) and Burberry Mallow Pink Lip Gloss (swatched here).
Both are classic reds I think are truly universally flattering. I’m not sure that I think I could pull them off for everyday or for every occasion, but I do think I can wear them for more special occasions. The pigment of the lipstick is very impressive. I wish more MAC lipsticks had that kind of color payoff (although I am a huge fan of the sheers and lustres). Did you pick up the new Viva Glam Rihanna shades? What’s your favorite Viva Glam to date?
I ordered a couple Tom Ford Lip Color Sheers ($49 each for .1 oz/3g) online last week and then picked up several more shades at the Neiman Marcus counter in San Francisco (see swatches of all the new shades here). These new beauties from Tom Ford are called “Lip Color Sheers” although I would say they are really not all that sheer. Pigment is somewhere in between the Regular Lipsticks (full cream coverage) and the Lip Color Shines (see-thru but still pigmented and glossy). The Lip Color Sheers have this lovely natural sheen and impressive pigment. The shimmery shades are a bit more sheer while the creams are more pigmented. although they are not quite glossy. I found lasting power to be quite good. The lip colors adhered well to the lips and faded nicely after several hours of wear. I tested In the Buff yesterday afternoon and it lasted from noon until the time I ate later that afternoon at around 5:00 pm.
Summer Fling is a soft light pink with gold shimmer. The shimmer isn’t super visible on the lips although you can still tell it’s a shimmer. This one has impressive coverage if you swipe back and forth on the lips a few times. It layers quite well. I found Summer Fling to have a glossy finish.
In the Buff is a pale seashell nude shimmer. It’s what I wanted Blush Nude to look like on me (that one is like concealer lips for me). In the Buff has just enough shimmer and color to not wash me out completely. Pink Dune is similar but darker and has more of a swirly peachy pink shimmer to it. This one is also a lovely shade. Both these two are my top picks.
Sweet Spot is a brighter coral peach. It has a bit of shimmer but to me looks more like a cream on the lips. You can blend and sheer it out for lighter color but it’s still quite bright.
Paradiso is a hot pink. It’s a medium pink in the tube and swatched on the hands. On my lips the color really adheres to the lip and brightens up with a bit of layering. This one surprised me at how pigmented it is.
For the ingredient-conscious I managed to photograph the ingredient listings on the box before I tossed them (click to enlarge).
I’m a huge Tom Ford Beauty fan. Anyone who has tried his lipsticks can vouch that they are indeed best in class. They are a luxurious splurge and in my opinion – there’s just nothing you can compare. Still $50ish is still very difficult to justify for a lipstick. The spring/summer collection offers some gorgeous fresh shades for spring, all of which need no additional tweaking or added definition. I found the colors perfect as is, straight from the tube. The formula is long lasting and pigment is flawless. Given the number of bright options that have been released, you can definitely find a similar color from MAC or NARS. I’ll try to pull some comparisons later this week once the sun returns.
Tom Ford Lip Color Sheers are $49 each. The Spring/Summer shades are currently listed all as limited-edition. My top picks are the lightest shades in Summer Fling, In the Buff and Pink Dune. I can’t always pull off those gorgeous nudes or pales, and these are suitable with no extra work needed. Be sure to check out Makeup Magpie for her updated lip swatches.
Baby Pink is a soft peachy pink with shimmer. The shimmer shows up more on the lips than what you see in the tube, but it’s a natural kind of shimmer. It’s fairly pale on me due to the silvery flecks inside but still has enough color in the base to show up and not completely wash me out. I suspect fairer skin girls will love this. Medium-tan girls who love pale colors for more of a contrast will like this too as it will show up on the lips. I couldn’t detect any scent although I’m sick with a cold right now and traveling so you may want to try first. As far as I can recall, most of her regular lip glosses are without a noticeable scent. Lasting power is medium for a gloss. It’s better than Chanel Glossimers and Armani Flash Lacquers but I wouldn’t call it long lasting.
Pink Apricot Shimmer is just as the name implies. It’s a lovely pink apricot loaded with shimmer. The texture is fairly smooth for something with this much shimmer. It’s not frosty even though I find it very shimmery. There are a number of gorgeous shades it was hard to pick just one. I’m happy to report that these are a quite a bit sturdier than her last shimmer lipsticks (she’s reformulated them several times since her original ones). I had four shades of the older formula and found them so soft that all of them broke at the base. The new colors all appeared to be holding up well at the tester counter and they looked like they had been out a week or so to withstand some heavy testing.
Swatches side by side:
I highly recommend both. The shimmer lipsticks are definitely worth looking into – there’s a wide range of shades to choose from. I might have to go back and revisit to try one more.
Bobbi Brown Baby Pink Lipgloss and Pink Apricot Shimmer Lipstick are at all counters now. Online at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales.
Tom Ford Beauty fans: the Spring 2014 Beauty collection has arrived online at Nordstrom. The collection has new colors for lips and nails.
Nail Lacquers $32 each in Incandescent, Indiscretion, Coral Beach and Sugar Dune
Spring Lip Conditioners $49 each in Pink Dune, Paradiso, Bitter Sweet, Sweet Spot, Incorrigible, Summer Fling, In the Buff, Firecracker
I cannot wait for these to arrive in stores at counters. I am trying to resist the urge to order these online although I have all the nail polishes sitting in my cart right now. Plus Nordstrom has an online gift with purchase going on right now.
What has been your favorite spring collection released this year so far? I haven’t seen everything yet in stores so my favorite is still yet to be determined. This one just might be it.
NARS has four new Satin Lip Pencils ($25 each) with the latest Final Cut collection. The color theme is modern pinks and peaches. For those new to NARS, the Satin Lip Pencils are like large chubby stick lipsticks. They have a very lightweight airy texture but have full coverage with color. You need a smooth lip surface to wear these, if you have any flakies I recommend prepping your lips with a balm or smoothing base first. I find the Satin Lip Pencils to have a matte finish.
The four shades are Stourhead (a super pale powder pink), Villa Lante (a cool toned pink), Descanso (a soft peach-pink) and Torres del Paine (a straight apricot). I could only pull off the peach shades easily. The pinks turned to be too cool-toned for my pigmented lips and olive skintone. I suspect the pink colors are more flattering on paler skintones.
Stourhead was extremely difficult for me to apply smoothly. Below you can see with my pigmented lips the color looks blotchy and very pale. I’ve seen it on others who have fairer skin and it looks amazing on them.
Villa Lante and New Attitude
Villa Lante applied smoother with rich pigment. It turned a bit too blue on my skin with an almost Barbie-like look. If I had less olive in my skin it wouldn’t contrast so much and would be easier to pull off for me. For some reason Villa Lante looks warmer and more neutral in the pencil but on my skin it transform into a much cooler-toned color. I suspect I will have to do some layering with a gloss on top to make it less blueish.
Descanso and Love
These two are my favorites. Descanso is what I wanted Lodhi Pencil to be (which is lovely but very bright). I purchased a backup of Descanso because I can see myself wearing through this one quickly.
Torres del Paine and Final Cut
These come in close second to Descanso/Love. The peach color is bright enough to add brightness to the face but not too bright. In general I love peach shades.
For those who have other NARS Lip Pencils, I pulled some other shades to help you decide how close they are to previously released shades. As of now there are several different lip pencil formulas by NARS. I’ve also included a could Tom Ford lipsticks. In short:
Satin Lip Pencils (formula for the Final Cut) are full coverage pencils with a satiny finish, more on the matte side, but not quite 100% matte. They have a soft sheen making them look more natural.
Velvet Lip Matte Pencils are more matte in finish. They have full coverage as well with a more dramatic distinct finish.
Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils are my personal favorite, these have a thicker tacky finish with a gloss finish. They are long-wearing and some shades have shimmer. (Old lip swatches here, here and here.)
Left to right: NARS Bettina, Tom Ford Quiver, Tom Ford Smitten, NARS Stourhead, NARS Villa Lante, NARS Sex Machine, NARS Descanso, NARS Biscayne Park, NARS Torres del Paine, NARS Lodhi, NARS Happy Days.
I’m all over Descanso and Torres del Paine. Stourhead and Villa Lante are such gorgeous pinks in the pencil it’s a shame I can’t pull off those lovely pinks.
NARS Final Cut Satin lip pencils are currently exclusive in the US to Nordstrom and online at Nordstrom.com.
