There are new launches from By Terry and today I’m rounding up three of them including her two new Sun Designer Palettes in Hippy Chic + Happy Sun ($55 each for 15 g/0.53 oz) along with the new UV Base Sunscreen Cream SPF 50 ($55 for 1 fl oz/30 ml). After a few recent launches I felt were a bit meh, I’m thrilled to report these three items are excellent on all counts.
Up first are the two new Sun Designer Palettes. This is her third launch of these palettes previously reviewed here and here. The two options fall into the medium category – not too pale and not too deep. For me both are perfect for my complexion now and will work well into the summer when I become more tan. I purchased both sight unseen and I think these are easily the best ones she has launched yet. The pigment and color payoff is the same as previous palettes even though the price point has dropped drastically. The formula seems to have changed slightly and the powders have an almost creamy feel. The shimmers are very finely mixed pressed together. Since the pans are all close together it’s going to be nearly impossible to not mix shades – but that is how I apply them for the face. For more detailed color pick-up I use the Laura Mercier Fan Brush or Wayne Goss Air Brush.
Hippy Chic is the brighter more rosy option. It has a mix of shimmers and mattes.
Colors include:
- Shimmering pale pink
- Shimmering pink gold
- Pale baby pink
- Rosy coral matte
- Shimmering peachy orange
- Matte cool pink rose
Above also wearing Chanel Sublimage Le Teint in 40, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden, Hippy Chic Palette on the cheeks, Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad in Golden Mink, Tom Ford Waterproof Extreme Mascara, Pat McGrath Luxetrance Lipstick in Valetta + LUST: Gloss in Flesh Astral on top. Top from Free People. As you can see the colors can be blended out for a softer look. You can also layer them for more intensity but the overall finish is going to be more natural.
Happy Sun is like my dream neutral palette come true with tan and beige and soft warm gold tones.
Colors include:
- Shimmery sand champagne
- Shimmery medium tan
- Shimmering golden beige
- Matte brown tan
- Soft matte pink beige
- Soft matte warm neutral peach-tan

By Terry Happy Sun vs. Light and Tan Vibes:
Up next is the By Terry UV Base Sunscreen Cream with SPF50. I’ve been testing several face sunscreens this spring and this is one of them. Roundup to follow soon. This is described as an invisible sunscreen primer and it truly is that. It has a white almost gel-like texture and once blended disappears completely into the skin. When brands say their sunscreen is “invisible” I find around half the time they are not. Since I have tan skin most still leave a white cast. This one truly disappears 100%. It has no flash back in photographs. Active Ingredients are Avobenzone 3%, Octinoxate 6.8%, Octisalate 4.5%. Rest of ingredients listed here and here.
The sunscreen does have a fragrance to it which is hard to describe but it’s a soft floral non-sunscreen like scent. I want to say it smells a little like a floral almond but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s fairly strong but not irritating to the nose or skin. As one who is sensitive to sunscreens I found this did not irritate or clog my pores. It layered well over moisturizer without pilling and worked with a wide range of foundations.
Swatches below, left to right is straight from the tube, blended a little, then blended even more:
Items also shown in top photo and rest of the post: Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in 786, Laura Mercier Fan Brush, Wayne Goss Air Brush, Tory Burch Sienna Sandals (I’d recommend going up 1/2 a size from your normal Tory Burch sizing), sunglasses from J.Crew (old style), sun hat from Nordstrom (old style, similar here), By Terry Lash Expert Mascara (review here, I’ve made this work by layering it on top of a waterproof mascara), Byredo Blanche Perfume.
Overall thumbs up on all three new items. I’m happy with both of my palette purchases and was thrilled to get a sample of the new sunscreen. I highly recommend all three.
You can find By Terry online at Nordstrom, Space NK, Bloomingdale’s, Barneys New York, Beautylish.
Sunscreen is a press sample. Palettes purchased by me.

I would choose the Hippy Chic. Love pink 😉
Dear Sabrina,
Thank you for a wonderful review! Both look wonderful on you. I have the Hippy Chic and I love it. I’m a bit darker than you and you have always been my go to for information.
A question: How does the Happy sun compares to Les Beiges Healthy Glow Luminous Multi-Colour Powder in DEEP. Is the former darker, or is the Chanel darker. I’m trying to figure out which one to buy (or both?). I wear the Chanel les beiges Marinier 2 (from 2-3 years ago, I hope you have it) almost everyday, it shows very lightly on me and I like it. So I’m trying to figure out which one of these: if the Happy Sun or the new Chanel Les beiges is going to be as pretty and subtle as the old Marinier 2. You know, a nice healthy bronze, not too dark. In your photos the Happy sun looks wonderful in your skin tone!!!! (I have olive undertones), in your photo for the Chanel one it looks a bit more luminous?
I hope you understand my question, and can help me. Thank you
Thank you for the swatches and review. I got to try this on at a Space NK and it’s absolutely gorgeous!!! I love bronzers! I would love it if you reviewed the new Chantecaille La Sirena Bronzer Limited Edition please!!!
I have Hippy Chic and it is a wonderful palette! I’ve ordered Happy Sun, waiting for it to get here. I also have some of the older palettes and was so happy on the drastic price change. I heard that it’s due to the packaging change which is fine with me!
I love the Happy Sun palette! That sunscreen sounds lovely, though it’s a shame it has chemical actives instead of physical as I don’t go near those.
Happy Sun is tempting!
You look amazing with blushes! So glowy 🙂
I really like the “Hippy Chic” palette, probably because that coral color is so very pretty 🙂
By terry has the best designs. I love looking at that pan.
These palettes are so pretty! I wish it was easier to pick up individual colors.
Beautiful but I am holding out on Charlotte Tiburry. I heard there is a new cream blush/ highlight combo coming out.
A sunscreen that is actually invisible? Count me in!
Cute top!
Pretty colors
Love By Terry products! Happy Sun looks beautiful! Thanks for another great review!
The Happy Sun palette looks amazing! i would get a lot of use out of it!
Love these palettes so much!
The hippie chic palette looks pretty!
Hi Sabrina!! First – what a beautiful lay flat photo!!! Love! Second – thanks for this wonderful review! By Terry has been one of my favorite brands but I also found the last launch verrrry underwhelming. These look so pretty! Thanks for your awesome reviews! What would make up lovers do without you?? SJ
The UV base sunscreen sounds promising! I’m always in search of good sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast AND goes well with foundations. SPF 50 is a huge plus too. I’ll definitely check this one out!
the swatches are everything <3
Good to know about the sunscreen. My whole fam is darker complected so I am always on the lookout for ones that don’t leave a white cast. What’s your experience been with mineral sunscreens?
Such pretty palettes. Need to find where these are sold
Love these
Gorgeous!
both of those palettes are FAB!
I find that mexoryl based sunscreens are good
I want the happy sun palette so bad!
OMG, happy chic looks so pretty!
Thank you for a great post! I’m always trying to find a sunscreen that doesn’t leave a me looking like a ghost.
The white cast that sunscreens leave on my face really turn me off and therefore I rarely wear them! The By Terry UV Base Sunscreen Cream with SPF50 sounds like something I need though!
Thanks so much for the great reviews and swatches! I just ordered Happy Sun and can’t wait to get it, and I am always on the hunt for a face sunscreen that is not too white and does not turn my face into a shiny mess so I am going to try to get a sample of the BT.
Why do they always have the prettiest summer palettes!
I’ve always wanted to try one, but the price point prohibited me from doing so because I know I will only use about half the shades. It’s great that the price has been lowered on these new ones. I won’t feel so guilty purchasing it.
I really like the Hippy Chic palette. I had one of her palettes and really quite enjoyed it until my daughter decided to take it home with her. 🙂 The packaging works well with the design of product inside the palette.
Love the warmer palette and will be trying the new sunblock. 😍
Thanks for the review of the UV based sunscreen spf 50. I’m always looking for a new sunscreen and the older I get, the more I need it! I also love he palates. The happy sun one is my favorite of the two you reviewed.
Lovely Colors!
I have my eyes on By Terry palettes for the longest time but $82 is a lot of money so I’m happy that when they launched Hippy Chic at a more reasonable price. Good to know that it got your approval, will be buying it after this.
ps: Long time reader but first time commenter. You have been my go-to for foundations review because we are the same skin tone and your swatches helped me so much. xx
