Miami Beach Travel Diary via The Beauty Look Book

As promised I have another travel diary to share today! We did two back to back trips to Los Angeles on the West Coast for a wedding and then flew back to the East Coast to visit Miami for Art Basel. Miami has been on my list for over a year now and I couldn’t have been more excited for our trip. This was my first time there and we spent a total of four days in South Beach. We had an amazing time although Miami was extremely packed due to the crowds of people coming into town for the art shows, parties and events. We knew this would be the case but planned a trip anyways for a few events and to plan our last getaway before the end of the year. If you’re looking for a beautiful warm place to vacation put this on your list! This post is photo heavy so grab a cup of tea or coffee before reading. I’ve recapped most of everything we did!

South Beach Miami

Where We Stayed

Since everything tends to go up in price and get booked quickly when there are large events in town, I’d recommend planning your trip at least two months in advance if you go during busy times. We found even with advance planning most of the hotel rates were more than double their normal rates. We found a few good Airbnb options that had great reviews in Coconut Grove and around Miami, but we wanted to stay in Miami Beach. Andrew booked two hotels for our four day stay at the Royal Palm South Beach Miami and the Stiles Hotel. Both are located on Collins Avenue in South Beach near tons of cute restaurants, cafes and shops. During non-busy times their rates are fairly affordable and we had a pleasant stay at both of them. With some of the boutique hotels we were a bit worried as reviews are so mixed. We were so relieved to find both had clean rooms, excellent service and had great locations.

Royal Palm South Beach View

We would definitely consider staying at the Royal Palm South Beach again. The hotel rooms were cute and beds were super comfortable. There are cute restaurants inside the hotel, there’s a beautiful pool and outdoor bar. There are organized beach chairs and cabanas right along the beach in the hotel and they have rooms with an amazing view of the water. If you want a hotel that’s right along the beach that you can walk out and lounge around this one is a great one that’s affordable.

Royal Palm South Beach Miami Hotel, review

The Stiles Hotel is more of a budget hotel in a more simplistic way. It reminded both of us of some of the European hotels we’ve stayed at with the no-frills simple kind of approach. There’s no driveway to park the cars although they do offer valet services. The elevators are tiny and on the slow side much like some of the older boutique Parisian hotels. The staff was extremely friendly and courteous. They recommended a parking garage around the corner which they told us would be significantly cheaper to use than their valet service. While there isn’t anything luxurious about this one, sometimes all you need is a clean place to sleep while traveling and if you want an affordable option this is a great pick.

Where We Went

We had a few meetings, lunches and events on our agenda and then planned to take our time exploring in between. Since our hotels were near the beaches we spent a lot of time just walking around Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. There are lots of cute Art Deco style buildings which was fun to see.

One of our favorite things to do each time we visit a new place is go on the hop-on-hop-off bus tours. It’s a great way to see the city without having to worry about getting lost, hectic traffic and parking. Plus with the double-decker buses you can see a lot from the top. I’m not sure how we would have survived the heat if we tried this a month or two ago, but we did go on these in the heat of Europe and still had a lot of fun. Due to time restraints as we had meetings to get to we didn’t spend as much time as we would have liked on these. If you’re new to an area and don’t know exactly where you want to go these buses hit all the popular hot spots. It gives you a good idea of where everything is, then you can go back on your own later to the spots you want to spend more time at. We’ve tried a number of different ones, this time we did the Big Bus Tours.

Also on my list was the Museum of Ice Cream. Tickets had been sold out in LA and San Francisco and I had been dying to see this. We bought preview tickets before it opened to the public and it’s literally the most pink EVERYTHING that I have ever seen. I’d definitely recommend going. It does seem better suited to girls, if you have a girls trip planned it’s the perfect place for photos. Everything is perfectly designed for Instagram photos and they give you ice cream or candy in every room.

Shopping

The shopping is something I’d definitely go back for. There was so much on my list but we had to save it for another trip. We did go to Aventura Mall (for Nordstrom to pick up a few things).

Louboutin Beaute Aventura Nordstrom

We had a breakfast meeting in the Brickell District and there’s a new multi-story mall there with Diptyque and Sephora. The Saks store there is what all Saks stores should be like. I feel like they’ve lost their luster over the years but this one is amazing! The shoe department is heaven.

No trip is complete for me without a stop to a Sephora!

Not really shopping but we had breakfast at EAST Miami Brickell. The hotel space is lovely, I’d really love to stay here next time we visit Miami. Plus it’s connected to the mall!

The Design District had a lot of events, pop-ups and new store openings. We went to see the new Creed Boutique and Sisley-Paris store openings – both of which I was so excited to see!

Food Picks

There were so many restaurants we wanted to try but after some bad eating habits in LA we started to gain weight and tried to limit our junk food eating while in Miami. We stopped by a few casual eating places in Miami – thank you SO MUCH to each of you who gave me recommendations! I have a solid list of 50 spots to try on our next visit when we have more time to explore. We found this cute French sandwich shop where you order and eat at the counters. They have the biggest sandwiches I’ve ever tried. We liked it a lot.

La Sandwicherie Miami

Miami Eats

I didn’t get a photo of every place we ate. We tried coffee and pastries at Shepherd Artisan Coffee (cute but wouldn’t recommend), tacos at Taquiza (would definitely go back!), La Sandwicherie in Miami (so fun), Michael’s in the Design District (delicious), Bodega in Miami (best fish tacos we’ve ever had), Rosetta Bakery on Collins (sooooo cute!!).

If we were to do our trip over again we would have definitely picked another time to visit for our first trip together. Things during Art Basel week can get pretty hectic and busy. Traffic is pretty bad. We did go see exhibits at Art Basel although there were tons of installations and pop ups all around the city. I didn’t take any photos inside as I felt a little weird taking pictures of other people’s art – not sure why exactly, but it just didn’t feel right to me. We enjoyed a lot of people watching, walking along the beaches, enjoyed the sunshine and wished we had another week to just explore at our leisure. The good thing is we had a great last trip of the year and definitely plan on going back. We returned back home to St. Pete Beach which is a lot quieter and more laid back than Miami. If you’re looking for a warm beachy place to really kick back and relax, I’d recommend opting for the other side of Florida (our favorite Tampa Bay spots here). If you’re looking for something more cosmopolitan and energetic, Miami is the place to be.

Hope you enjoyed this Miami travel diary! I could have probably split this up into several posts. We definitely want to go back and see more. There’s a lot we didn’t get to. If you have any favorite Miami Beach spots you’ve been to let me know in the comments.

Beauty reviews coming soon on Laura Mercier, Tom Ford and NARS. I’ve been swatching away the past week and hope to have the posts up shortly.

His and Hers Fragrance Favorites of the Year

December 15, 2017

Fragrance Shelfie His and Hers | The Beauty Look Book

Doing a little his and hers shelfie today rounding up our fragrance favorites of the year. Looking back on my archives I haven’t done a scent roundup since early spring but quite a few have been on repeat for months. I used up several bottles year including Tom Ford Sole di Positano, Soleil Blanc, Creed Virgin Island Water and the Replica Glow Filter. Andrew has gone through several bottles of Creed Aventus and Chanel Bleu de Chanel. More details on our favorites below.

Best Colognes of the Year for Him

Best of Men's Fragrance Creed, Chanel, Dior, Viktor and Rolf

Andrew’s favorites: Andrew is probably like most men where he has 2-3 main go-to colognes depending on occasion. Ideally he wants a minimal and well edited grooming routine where he finds something he loves and sticks with it. This year he discovered Creed when I brought him back a couple mini vial samples from the Creed New York Boutique. He fell in love with Aventus and we both wondered why we had not discovered this sooner. If he had to pick one scent for the rest of his life it would be this one.

  • Creed Leather Atomizer Small ($175, holds 10 ml) is something Andrew asked me to buy him after he saw my small turquoise one (shown here). He likes to have something he can carry with him when we travel. We found one in Black and Silver at a local Neiman Marcus and he’s obsessed with it. It’s small, sturdy and easy to fit in a dopp kit without taking up a lot of space.
  • Creed Aventus ($375 for 75 ml) is the ultimate scent for men. It has a fresh but masculine mix that is suitable year round for any occasion. Both of us agree this is what a great fragrance smells like. Much to my wallet’s dismay he’s used up several bottles, but the Creed team kindly sent one for the holiday with their Engraved Medallion which they’re offering with any 75 ml bottle purchase on their website. (The engraving option is available on each fragrance page.) You can pick up to 3 letters that they’ll engrave on the back.
    • Aventus notes include Bergamot, blackcurrant leaves, apple, pineapple, pinkberries, birch, patchouli, jasmine, musk, oakmoss, ambergris and vanilla
    • Quick peek at the new Boutique in Miami here and here, their New York Boutique featured here
  • Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette ($74 to $145) has been on Andrew’s list since it launched. Since discovering Creed the Dior has moved down on his favorites, but it’s a great everyday scent that isn’t overpowering and light. His brother came over once and the two of them were going through his skincare and grooming routine. He smelled this and really liked it and asked us to buy him one for Christmas. They are complete opposites so I’d say the Dior is a good safe option that I think will appeal to most men.
  • Chanel Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum Set ($154) Andrew has tried pretty much all the Chanel men’s colognes and eau de toilettes and the Bleu de Chanel is his favorite. He actually prefers buying it in the Travel Spray atomizer because it’s easier to carry in places like his briefcase. I like that you can buy the refills separately as well on Chanel.com. He’s tried both the Parfum and Eau de Toilette versions. He prefers the Eau de Toilette because it has a more fresh and modern vibe but both are really good.
    • Bleu de Chanel Notes – I can’t find the exact list, but this is a woody citrus that’s clean but masculine
  • Molton Brown Russian Leather Eau de Toilette ($65 for 1.7 fl oz) was a new Molton Brown launch this year. It’s clearly masculine and does indeed have a rich leather vibe to it. It has a classic smoky but slightly modern feel to it. It’s different from the fresh scents Andrew gravitates towards. Lasting power on him is really good with this one. It’s not as universal as the other ones listed above, you will either love or hate it. We both love it.
    • Russian Leather notes include Elemi, Black tea, Purple Basil, Siberian Pine, Tobacco, Birch, Vetiver, Leather and Cade
  • Also shown, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate which is mine but he also uses it, Diptyque Chene candle recycled

Sabrina’s Favorite Perfumes of the Year

Best Luxury Perfumes of the Year | Beauty Look Book

My favorites this year have been from Tom Ford and Creed. I feel like I’ve lived in Sole di Positano, Soleil Blanc and Virgin Island Water (used up and not shown). Of course as usual my list is more extensive. I cannot stick to one perfume just like I cannot have just one or two nude lipsticks. I’m a true beauty junkie. I normally have liked scents with sandalwood or some kind of amber, but based on my list below it appears I’m really one who loves bergamot and scents that are more citrus based with some florals mixed in.

  • Byredo Hair Mist in Bal D’Afrique and Mojave Ghost ($62 each for 75 ml) are two I debated on for months and finally splurged. I love both as Bal D’Afrique is sweeter and Mojave Ghost is lighter and brighter. I already own the Bal D’Afrique perfume and love it. I’ve used up four mini vials of the Mojave Ghost and should just buy the full size perfume already. The hair mist has decent lasting power, even in Florida heat. It has a nice mist dispenser which sprays it evenly over the hair.
    • Notes for Bal D’Afrique include African Marigold, Bergamot, Bucchu, Lemon, Neroli, Cyclamen, Jasmin Petals, violet, Black Amber, Moroccan Cedarwood, Musk and Vetiver
    • Notes for Mojave Ghost include Ambrette, magnolia, sandalwood, violet, cedarwood, chantilly musk, crisp amber
  • Tom Ford Sole di Positano ($230 for 50 ml) was reviewed here in this post, one of the best bergamot scents I’ve tried! Used it up entirely and it’s on my wishlist to repurchase once I work my way down through other ones
    • Notes include Italian bergamot, petitgrain bigarade, lemon, mandarin leaves, shiso leaf
  • Tom Ford Soleil Blanc ($230 for 50 ml) probably my favorite scent ever, best white floral that smells like spring and summer and sunshine
    • Notes include bergamot, cardamom oil Orpur, pistachio accord, ylang ylang, benzoin extract Orpur, coco de mer accord
    • Also available in this gorgeous Travel Atomizer Set ($230 for 10 ml each)
  • Creed Leather Atomizer ($175) makes for such a beautiful gift – it comes with a funnel to make it easy to pour inside, these come in multiple colors, I have the aqua one and this silver one is so pretty for holiday!
  • Creed Love in White ($350 for 75 ml) is one of the scents most of you have recommended to me, I finally tried it and fell in love. The Creed sent one for holiday feature – this too comes with a complimentary engraved gold medallion for any 75 ml bottle or larger. This is such a beautiful feminine fresh scent, I will be wearing it for months to follow and probably will do so for years!
    • Notes include orange zest, Florentine iris, daffodils, magnolia, Bulgarian rose, Tonkin rice, vanilla, ambergris and Mysore sandalwood
  • Creed Virgin Island Water ($290 for 50 ml) not shown because I’ve used mine up, this is the ultimate vacation scent. Living in Florida it feels like I’m living in a permanent vacay state of mine with the weather so it’s fitting to wear it any time of year!
    • Notes include Sicilian white bergamot, Jamaican lime, Sicilian mandarin, hibiscus, ylang-ylang, Indian jasmine, Tonkin musk and tropical wood
  • Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt ($135 for 3.4 oz) is my favorite layering cologne. It’s one I can definitely wear alone to but it layers so nicely with other scents like Wild Bluebell and pretty much anything else. This is my year-round scent that I can wear no matter what the weather is like.
    • Notes include Bergamot, ambrette seeds, buchu leaves, sea salt, mineral accord, dry fruits, driftwood accord, guaiac wood, white musk, sage.
  • Atelier Cologne Coffret Collection ($275 customizable set) I discovered Atelier Cologne this fall in San Francisco. We passed by a boutique and I had such an amazing experience there. I bought a small travel spray of Bois Blonds and used it up within weeks. The store sent us home with tiny vial samples of a few others we liked and you can actually buy the Sampler Set for $35on their website which is genius! All fragrance brands should do something like this. I’ve since bought a few boxed sets from Sephora and also already used up an Orange Sanguine. On Atelier Cologne’s website you can make your own boxed sets. I ordered one and am so excited! A few thoughts on each one:
    • Clementine California is a bright citrus with clementine, juniper berries, pepper and sandalwood
    • Oolang Infini is one of the best calming scents with bergamot, neroli and freesia
    • Vanilla Insensee is one of two vanilla scents I’ve been able to wear, the vast majority of vanilla based scents are too sweet and too rich for me to wear, this one has coriander, jasmine and vetiver mixed in
    • Bois Blonds is a beautiful peppery wood scent with neroli and bergamot
    • Orange Sanguine is a blood orange with cedarwood, black pepper and jasmine
    • Also found at Sephora, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom if you have one near by to smell them in person (although they don’t have all the size options in stores, you’ll have to shop them online)
  • L’Artisan Mure et Musc ($96 for 1.7 oz) is the best berry scent I’ve tried. This brand unfortunately has become increasingly more difficult for me to find as I can only find it online at Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue (no stores near me). This is a classic I think everyone should try, it has the most beautiful mix of berry and musk without being too sweet.
    • Notes include lemon, orange, basil, lavendar, blackberry, jasmine, musks, patchouli and oakmoss
  • Replica Glow Filter ($55 for 1.7 oz) was initially reviewed here a while ago, this is a perfumed oil spray which can also be used as a primer for other fragrances. I like to wear it alone all over because it’s an oil I like it as a body moisturizer. I’ve since used up an entire bottle (this one is my second) and it smells like fresh clean warm skin to me.
  • Maison Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis Hair Mist ($65 for 70 ml) is an alcohol-free hair mist which is a light airy scent. It has a linen feel to it with the freshness, it has a combination of lily of the valley, mock orange, bergamot, lemon, and musky wood. Makes me feel like I’m walking on a cloud!

I hope you enjoyed our favorites roundup! As always let me know what your favorite scents were this year. I live to read about what other people wear. There are so many perfumes on the market it’s just overwhelming to decide where to look or what to try. I loved that dozens of you have commented and e-mailed me to recommend Creed Love in White.

Fragrance Favorites of the Year

If Andrew had to pick one favorite, you can guess it would be Creed Aventus hands down. If I had to pick one I would not be able to. But if I had to pick three I could narrow it down to Tom Ford Sole di Positano, Tom Ford Soleil Blanc and Creed Love in White. If I could add two more the next ones to follow would be Atelier Cologne Oolang Infini and Byredo Mojave Ghost.

Did you discover anything new in perfume this year? Or do you stick to your tried and true? Do you use hair perfume? Let me know which ones you’ve tried and love! I’ll be rounding up my favorites of the year in a few other categories in upcoming posts so stay tuned! Also working on review of the new NARS foundation, Tom Ford Eyeshadow Singles and Matte Lipsticks from Laura Mercier. Trying to get everything swatched and tested before the end of the year.

MAC Jade Jagger and MAC x Patrick Starrr Collections

MAC Jade Jagger and Patrick Starrr Collections Review + Swatches

There are two new MAC collections that launch today! I have both the MAC Jade Jagger and Patrick Starrr Collections reviewed with swatches and first impressions.Everything is limited-edition and I wanted to get these up as soon as I could before items sell out. Up first is the MAC Jade Jagger Collection which has a focus on MAC’s mineralize products in new shades. I’ve been a long time fan and collector of the Mineralize Skinfinish and Skinfinish Natural along with the blushes. I’ve found the eye and lip products can be hit or miss. Everything is beautiful in color and very wearable – but your preference for shimmer might make you pass on the shadows.

There are two Mineralize Eyeshadow Quads in Burning Nights (cool tones) and Golden Shine (warmer tones). Both quads are with the baked formula which makes the shadows harder and stiff. They are all on the shimmery/sparkly side true to what I’d envision someone like Jade Jagger to wear. I found they swatched poorly on the arms but applied better on the lids if I prime them. When I applied these they are prone to fallout – there’s quite a bit of sparkle so you will need to do some clean up on the cheeks. The good news for me is once I applied them they stayed put. There is also a gorgeous Mineralize Skinfinish with a shimmer and matte bronze called Satin Shimmer. This has medium-sheer pigment and looks natural on the skin. I adore this duo but found it similar to my favorite MSF in Global Glow (also swatched below).

I have two of the three new Mineralize Rich Lipsticks in Sunset Pearl (nude pink) and Rolling Red (deep red). Both are super smooth in texture and feel hydrating on the lips. In other shades I’ve tried the Mineralize Rich Lipsticks are sometimes on the sheer side. These are good in pigment with a pretty soft shine to them.

Swatches below:

Up next is the MAC x Patrick Starrr Collection which I absolutely love everything in. The Eyeshadow Quads have a lot of repeat shades but for some reason the formula in these quads feels a lot better than most of MAC’s single shadows. They’re smooth, buttery and rich. I think they’re just beautiful. There are two in Patrick Starrr Glam AF with Brule, OMIGAUD, Saddle and Embark and the GoalGetter has Soft Brown, Amber Lights, Swiss Chocolate and I’m Into It.

The Set Powder is something I’ve never tried before and I’m thoroughly impressed with this one. It looks translucent but there’s a soft beige tint to the powder which works perfectly for my medium skin tone. I’m ordering a few back ups of this one – I’ll have to investigate the other shades from their regular line as well. It is a soft matte without any white cast on my skin and lasts an impressive amount of time.

MAC Patrick Starrr Set Powder

Next are the lips which come in matching lipstick and lipglass shades. There are corresponding lipliners from the permanent lineup but they come in special-edition packaging. Lipsticks and Lipglasses come in the following shades: She Betta Werrrk is a pale but wearable pink, Mamastarrr is a perfect nude, Patrick Woo is a bright vibrant red. Lip Pencils come in Edge to Edge (pink), Mahogany (brown) and Brick (deep red). I really appreciate the fact that the pale pink shade is wearable even on my pigmented lips and olive skin tone.

MAC Jade Jagger and Patrick Starrr Review + swatches

Overall thoughts: I really like everything in the MAC Patrick Starrr collection. The shades are wearable, the quads are excellent in formula and I’m 100% obsessed with the setting powder. I do think the lipliners are ones you can skip. The colors are good and classics but they’re permanent (except for the special edition packaging) so there’s no rush to get them if you’re on your list. The Jade Jagger collection is really pretty – I love the colors and the Mineralize Skinfinish, but I still haven’t been super wowed by the other products in the Mineralize line. Out of the two quads I do like Burning Nights a lot more – pigment is better and it’s easier to apply on the eyes for me.

You can find both collections online now at MAC Cosmetics. I believe the Jade Jagger collection will be available only at select MAC stores (I called a few near me and neither of them said they were going to receive it). The MAC x Patrick Starrr Collection is also available at Nordstrom. Everything is limited-edition.

Fragrance Holiday Gift Guide Home / Interiors

Best Holiday Candles and Gifts for the Home

December 13, 2017

Best Holiday Candles to Give as Gifts | The Beauty Look Book

I’m a die hard lover of home scents and good candles. They help change the mood of a room and during the holiday there are all kinds of great seasonal options to make the house smell like Christmas. I’ve rounded a few picks of what I think are the best holiday candles and gifts for the home. If you have any favorites you like to burn during the holiday season let me know in the comments below!

The holiday season would not be complete for me without Diptyque. I’ve bought the seasonal pine scent each year and this is the first year I’ve felt their pine is a bit different with a minty green touch to the scent. They have three seasonal candles with colored wax, a black jar in a cosmic theme with gold magical creatures on the exterior. It’s really just so beautiful! I bought the Cosmic Seasonal Candle Trio ($105 to $210). You can also find these individually although the orange one has pretty much sold out everywhere. Unicorn Frosted Forest Scented Candle is fir with a hint of mint and hinoki, Feu d’Argumes/Fiery Orange Dragon is a warm smoky orange clove and Larmes d’Encens/Incense Tears Phoenix with incense, cinnamon and myrrh. All three are phenomenal this year.

Diptyque Cosmic Seasonal Candle Trio | The Beauty Look Book

There is also the 10 piece Mini Candle Collection ($150) which makes for the ultimate luxury home gift. It’s the best way to sample a lot of Diptyque in a more affordable way than buying each one individually. Burn time is quick on these but it’s long enough to get a good sense of what they smell like when burned.

Diptyque 10 Piece Mini Candle Collection

Antica Farmacista has some of the most elegant holiday sets. I just discovered them last year and love their diffusers. After writing about them last holiday I discovered that many of you have loved this line for years! Their Silver Cedar is a holiday release this year and it has everything I love for holidays: cypress, sandalwood, spruce and juniper in the most elegant combination ever. They’ve also brought back the Champagne Black Label which is the best sparkling sweet champagne scent I’ve ever tried. I have used this in the candle, room spray and diffuser and love it. All of their gift options here. You can find products directly from their website Antica Farmacista and also at Nordstrom. Shown below is the 100 ml Diffuser Trio ($64) with Silver Cedar, Champagne Black Label and Sandalwood Amber and their Candle Set with Silver Cedar, Champagne Black Label ($98) and a gorgeous wick trimmer. The diffusers are perfect for the guest bathrooms! They come beautifully boxed.

Antica Farmacista Diffuser Trio and Candle Set Holiday 2017

This year they also launched a gorgeous 12 Days of Antica Calendar ($175) with deluxe sized minis of their candles, diffusers, body products and a wick trimmer as well. I can’t think of a better luxury home gift than this set.

Antica Farmacista 12 Days of Antica

Molton Brown is also another favorite line. My favorite scent for any time of year is the Coco and Sandalwood 3 Wick Candle and Home and Linen Mist, but for the holiday they always have fun limited-edition launches. I was able to try the Vintage With Elderflower Candle and it’s such a lovely sweet holiday scent. It has grapefruit, mandarin, elderflower, petigrain, coriander, vetiver and ambergris. If you like something on the sweet side but not candy sweet this is a beautiful sweet citrus option. I’ve been burning it for the past few hours as I’ve been putting this post together and it’s definitely lifted my mood with a bit of energy. Other holiday scent options on their website as well including Fabled Juniper Berries and Lapp Pine along with their classic Festive Frankincense and Allspice.

Molton Brown Vintage Elderflower Candle Holiday 2017

That wraps up this year’s holiday gift guide for the best candles I’ve found. There are tons of great options and individual options from so many brands. I find that my top three brands year over year are Diptyque and Molton Brown, and Antica Farmacista has been added to the mix. If you’re looking for more affordable holiday options that still have amazing throw with a luxury vibe, Nest is a great line to check out. I also really like the Henri Bendel candles as well. One that isn’t new is Cire Trudon Ernesto which is probably the best luxury scent for the home, my husband smelled it for the first time right when we moved to Florida and said “that’s what we should burn all the time.” It really is phenomenal and I need to repurchase it at some point soon. There are a number of new ones out for holiday which I was really tempted to order, but given the price and the fact that I’m not that familiar with the entire line, I feel like they are something I need to smell first before buying – especially since part of me thinks it might not get better than Ernesto. I usually include something from Jo Malone and I do think their Pine and Eucalyptus Candle is a classic. This year they have a gorgeous one with a green label for holiday. I was debating whether or not to buy it (I usually do every year) but with the Florida sunshine combined with our travels this month I wasn’t sure I would have time to burn it before Christmas and I usually feel pine is best done in November/December. I skipped it this year.

Holiday Gifts for Girls Who Have Everything

I’m wrapping up my holiday gift guides this week! Today’s roundup includes gift ideas for girls who seem to have everything aka the hard-to-shop-for. If you have friends who are like me and seem like they have all the latest and greatest in makeup there are still plenty of options for gifts. Products like a nice hand cream, luxe lip balm, luxury candle or sheet masks are great ideas because they’ll get used and with winter weather their skin will appreciate it. Even if they already have them!

  1. Space NK x Nordstrom Holiday Heros Silver Edition ($99, valued at $225) great value set with Space NK’s classics, also available direct from Space NK in a different variation.
  2. By Terry Baume de Rose ($60) a classic balm that you really cannot go wrong with, it’s hydrating and luxurious with a super smooth feel. It also comes in a tube version but the pot gives you more product.
  3. Original Beauty Box Deluxe Size ($159) is one of my best beauty buys to organize my makeup, I own several of these although I only have one with me at the moment (the others are in storage). The image above is one filled with my own products to show height and what fits. You can see them displayed in my San Diego Home Loft Tour post as well to get a better idea of what other items will fit inside.
  4. Diptyque Mini Candle Collection ($150) has 10 miniature candles, this is the best way to sample multiple scents without having to buy the full size.
  5. Byredo Hand Cream ($35) comes in multiple scent options, it’s one of the most luxurious scented hand creams I’ve tried, my favorite of the moment is Mojave Ghost.
  6. Bobbi Brown Beauty Case ($160) a beautiful deep red beauty case, review here and last year’s shown here.
  7. Barefoot Dreams Cozy Chic Throw ($147) O-M-G this is the softest throw I’ve ever felt! I bought one and it was supposed to be a gift but after touching it I’ve decided to keep it. It’s so soft I want to wear it everywhere. Luckily they have an entire line of sweaters and I will be ordering some for myself.
  8. Boy Smells Candle Trio ($44) I’ve bought a few of the Boy Smells candles and they have incredible throw at a more affordable price compared to Diptyque, Byredo or Cire Trudon.
  9. Glamcor Riki Skinny Mirror from Beautylish ($195) is an amazing mirror that lights up with different light intensities with daylight lighting. It has a magnetic clip where you can mount a magnified mirror or iPhone holder. It’s large enough to see your entire face!
  10. Oribe Dry Styling Collection ($75) you can’t go wrong with this gift set, I think every girl I know would love this regardless of hair type or length, even if they already own these I’m sure they wouldn’t mind having a back up!
  11. Antica Farmacista 12 Days of Antica ($175) this is the best advent calendar I’ve seen this year, it’s already sold out at a number of places so I’d recommend you order soon if you are interested. Antica Farmacista is one of the most elegant home fragrance lines I’ve tried to date and EVERYTHING is beautiful. This one is still available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Barney’s New York.
  12. Chanel La Creme Main ($50) is one of the most uniquely packaged hand creams I’ve ever seen. It has a soft velvety finish so there’s no greasy feel. I like that it’s nicely hydrating but not heavy. Review on this one here.
  13. simplehuman Sensor Mirror Pro ($249.99) is the best mirror I’ve tried, the magnification and lighting is just phenomenal.
  14. Antica Farmacista Lush Palm Diffuser ($26) is one of the best fresh clean scents I’ve ever smelled, I’ve since used up a few of these over the past months and it’s a nice way to add home scents if you can’t burn candles where you are (ie traveling or in any building with restrictions).
  15. Tatcha Camellia Kisses Trio ($85) is a beautiful tinted lip balm trio in Red Camellia, Cherry Blossom Camellia, and Plum Blossom Camellia, review and swatches in this post here.
  16. Glamboxes Glamboard ($59.99) is a great display tray made of good quality acrylic. Each section expands or collapses so you can change the size depending on your counter space.

If you have someone super hard to shop for hope this gives you some ideas! For me when in doubt, I can never go wrong with any kind of face masks, sheet masks, hand creams or nice lip balms. Gift cards also work! What do you usually gift to those who are hard to shop for?

Press samples featured include the Glamcor Mirror, Antica Farmacista 12 Days of Antica, Tatcha Camellia Kisses Trio.

Weekend Los Angeles Travel Diary

Mr. C Beverly Hills Hotel Los Angeles Travel Diary | The Beauty Look Book

I have two travel diaries to share as we’ve spent a few weeks traveling this holiday from coast to coast! Two weekends ago Andrew and I flew to Los Angeles for my bestie’s wedding. We spent a few extra days in town to visit some of our favorite spots and meet up with some family as well. It’s been only 10 months since we left California and I can’t believe a lot has already changed in LA! Lots of new construction, new stores and massive mall renovations. We were in town for close to 3 days. This was a short trip and I wish we had been able to stay a full week but hopefully we will be able to travel back to the West Coast in the new year. Trip highlights and photo diary below!

Where we stayed: Mr. C Beverly Hills

For this trip Andrew and I stayed at Mr. C Beverly Hills and had an amazing stay. This was our second time staying at this hotel and it couldn’t be more perfect. I’ve stayed at a number of hotels in Los Angeles before and this one has been my favorite. The hotel has beautiful rooms, excellent service, amazing views and it’s also located in a great spot in Beverly Hills. It’s clean, modern, romantic and just lovely.

Travel beauty shelfie: let me know if you want the full beauty pack list and I’ll try to do a separate travel beauty post. In the meantime you can see my Travel Beauty Cases post here. What I packed on previous trips in my Dallas Travel Diary and San Francisco Pack List. I tend to repeat a lot of items. I traveled with the Dyson Supersonic Dryer for the first time and found it was absolutely essential for me. It will definitely be going on future trips! If you buy one make sure you find a good storage case for it. The one I have came with a pouch. I think the hard case version will probably be more ideal to protect it.

Sightseeing spots:

We’ve both been to Los Angeles a number of times so we picked a few sightseeing spots to visit. One of our favorite things to do is to look for night-time viewpoints. Since my brother is based in LA he has been able to show us some amazing view points! Places we stopped by:

Hollywood Sign Viewpoint Beachwood Drive

View of the Hollywood Sign from Beachwood Drive. If you’re driving along this street make sure you don’t keep going straight up into the hills! Turn off before you reach the hill otherwise you’ll get stuck like we did. The streets are narrow and windy and it took us forever to find our way back down!

Where we shopped:

Westfield Century City is a newly renovated mall and it’s amazing! There are still a lot of stores under construction with “coming soon” signs but there is a lot to find there. It’s especially great if you want a central location to shop with a lot to offer. The Nordstrom there has the most amazing beauty department I’ve seen in the US – they have Tom Ford, a Space NK wall, Atelier Cologne, Frederic Mall, a Natural Beauty section and so much more.

We also stopped by a few boutiques including Penhaligon’s and Aesop. The Aesop store is just so beautiful – all of them are! The staff is genuinely friendly, helpful, non-pushy and knowledgeable.

We made a quick stop inside Barneys New York on Rodeo Drive, I love this store 🙂

One evening we had dinner in Venice Beach on Abbott Kinney. I made a quick stop inside Hourglass store to see what was new. Anxiously waiting for spring launches!

Also on Abbot Kinney is an amazing Smashbox store! They have a lipstick bar and lipstick wall, it’s incredible. I highly recommend stopping by.

Where we ate:

Unfortunately I didn’t get many good food pics as the times we ate we were in dark restaurants or in a rush and didn’t get a photo! As a junk food junkie I’ve been dreaming about In-n-Out for months. I had been dieting for weeks beforehand to be able to eat junk food on our two recent trips. We ate at In-n-Out twice, had Mr. C room service a few times which was AMAZING (best burger I’ve ever had), dinner spots included Gjelina and Marino. Gjelina is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. In the event you aren’t able to get reservations and don’t want to wait for a table (dinner can get busy) there’s a take out Gjelina right next door.

What I packed and what I wore:

I packed an Away Carry-On with a few outfits, makeup, skincare and my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. I definitely over packed but didn’t quite pack the right clothing for the weather so I’ll share what I actually wore. I’ve also come to the realization that I need a wardrobe makeover for travel. Living in South Florida I’ve been living in super lightweight clothes, sandals, shorts, dresses because it is HOT here! For the rest of the country it’s really not warm enough to wear what I have right now. Funny how quick we can be to forget what real seasonal weather can be like. Although I do have to say I’ve always lived where it is sunny year round.

Weekend Packing for Beverly Hills

What I wore:

  • Tan leather jacket by Joie (older style, similar here, here and here)
  • Cotton floral sundress by Zara (old style)
  • Louis Vuitton Neverfull Tote MM size
  • Strapless navy floral dress by Majorelle
  • Black denim jeans from Paige (my favorite brand of jeans ever!)
  • Long sleeve sweater/tee by Rag and Bone/JEAN
  • Cotton button down shirt by Joie (old style, similar here, here and here)
  • Denim cut-off shorts from Blank NYC
  • Nude leather wallet on chain clutch by YSL
  • Black block-heeled sandals by Stuart Weitzman

Additional thoughts:

We had a lovely stay and it was great to be back on the West Coast. There were a few things we would have done differently if we could have a do-over on the trip.

  • If you plan visiting LA from out of town and are going to stay mainly in the Beverly Hills area I’d recommend you Uber instead of renting a car. Any hotel in the Beverly Hills area is going to have pretty high overnight parking fees and the traffic in LA is pretty stressful no matter where or when you’re driving. Not to mention finding street parking adds more stress. I’ve driven to LA from San Diego for events and weekend trips a number of times and my brother has recommended I take the train instead and Uber around the city to save time and stress from parking. That being said a lot of things are spread out in Southern California sometimes having a car is essential.
  • We probably would have booked 2 more days to be able to take our time, see more places and visit more with friends/family. I think if we had 4-5 full days it would have been plenty of time.
  • Shopping-wise I would have planned out my stops a little better. Abbot Kinney on Venice Beach has grown so much since I’ve last been there. I would have definitely allocated more time to walk the streets and browse. There are a lot of beauty boutiques there like Aesop, Caudalie, Hourglass, Smashbox and lot of clothing stores there. I think the Century City mall is quite amazing though.
  • We would have probably skipped visiting Santa Monica. I think it’s great to see once, but we’ve both been there so many times seeing it again was a bit redundant and it was pretty far from everything else we wanted to see.
  • Take some time to just sit back and do absolutely nothing! This is something we both need to work on. When we travel we tend to travel for adventure and I pack in a lot of things. Sometimes I need to remind myself to slow down and take a break.

Hope you enjoyed this travel diary! I’m working on my Miami trip post but probably won’t have it up until the end of the week or early next week. Stay tuned for more beauty posts soon!

Holiday Gift Guide Men's Grooming

Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts For the Guys

December 9, 2017

Best Holiday Gifts for Guys

It’s a countdown to Christmas which is just around the corner. I can’t believe how fast this holiday season has flown by! I have a few more gift guides to share before the shipping cut off times for Christmas delivery. Today’s gift guide is a roundup of gifts for the guys. For me the guys in my life are the easiest to shop for. They tend to be very loyal to a few small handful of brands in each category, so I know what skincare, body care or fragrance to look for. They don’t mind repeats because for grooming they prefer to stock up. On the flip side for those who don’t know what to try starter and travel sets are a great way to nudge the men in your life to up their grooming game without being too pushy.

I’ve already given these gifts to the guys in my life (Christmas came early for them). Cologne can be a tricky one to give. I feel like it’s something you should only give if you really know their taste or if that person is close to you. However Andrew has tested a number of colognes I’ve bought him and I do think the ones in this post are ones you cannot go wrong with.

  1. Kiehl’s First Class Essentials Collection $30 – this has a little bit of everything perfect for traveling and quick trips, there are a number of other men’s grooming sets to pick from as well
  2. Chanel Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette Set $123 – this one is is a classic for everyday wear
  3. Leica Sofort Compact Instant Camera $299 – such a fun gift and it works better than other instant print cameras I’ve tried
  4. Apple iPad Mini starts at $399 – perfect size for on-the-go
  5. Away Mini Suitcase $35 individually, sets start at $45 (see the inside and review here)
  6. Creed Aventus $375 for 75 ml, this holiday if you order direct from Creedboutique.com, with any 75 ml or larger purchase you receive complimentary engraving on a gold medallion which adds a personalized touch!
  7. Creed Travel Atomizer $175 is a perfect way to travel with colognes or perfumes
  8. Penhaligon’s Gentleman’s Fragrance Collection Gift Set $59 – something Andrew picked himself to sample as he’s a huge fan of the Blenheim Bouquet Shaving Cream (he says it’s THE best shaving cream he’s tried)
  9. malin+goetz Grooming Kit $40 – another great starter set with a little bit of everything to try, my brother really likes this line
  10. Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth Speaker $109 – I’ve bought Andrew multiple Bose speakers for his office, for his work space at home and this one is perfect for bringing along to the beach or if you’re outdoors
  11. Kiehl’s Age Defender Eye Repair $30 – this is what Andrew is currently using
  12. Viktor and Rolf Spicebomb Set $120, is a classic date night scent, also in a square gift box here
  13. Jack Black The Jack Pack Set $49 – they have the best men’s grooming body care, I also borrow the Jack Black items from Andrew
  14. Jack Black The Balm Squad Set $25 – a great manly looking lip balm option
  15. Ray-Ban Chris 54mm Gradient Lens Sunglasses $143 – not shown because I forgot to add them to the photo, but sunglasses are always a good idea and you can’t go wrong with Ray-Ban, I just bought these ones for Andrew which are a nice more trendy variation of classic aviators

That wraps up my Men’s Holiday gift guide! If you have any questions or need recommendations let me know, I’ve had both my husband and my brother test out a lot of product to see what works for them!
