Lips Roundup

Favorite Luxury Lipstick Formulas

July 29, 2016

It’s National Lipstick Day today so I’m rounding up some of my favorite luxury lipstick formulas. I think everyone has their favorites – many of you want to know what I think the best ones are and as always, I have to say it depends! It depends on color preference, formula, finish, coverage and packaging. I gravitate towards neutrals and nudes, often times I have duplicates of the same color – but there are so many nuances in undertone, shimmer, finish I think often times they are different enough to justify owning. I’ve split mine into formula categories.

Best Full Coverage

Best Matte

  • Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution (Very Victoria and Sexy Sienna shown) hands down best matte because it’s a luminous matte that also has a hydrating formula that won’t dry out the lips, swatches here and here

Favorite Classic Formulas

  • Edward Bess Ultra Slick Lip Color (Pure Impulse shown) my all time favorite in the top 3 lipstick formula, I will have a dedicated post swatching and reviewing all of his lipsticks soon, they are fig scented, creamy and just perfect in terms of pigment and coverage
  • Tom Ford Lip Colors (Guilty Pleasure shown) always a favorite, this is also in my top 3 for the ultimate luxury splurge, formulas have either a cream or shimmer finish, coverage is smooth with medium to full coverage, swatches here
  • Tom Ford Lips and Boys (Austin shown) perfect clutch-sized lip colors, multiple colors and shades reviewed and swatched here
  • Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G (Penelope Pink shown) review and swatches here and here
  • Chanel Rouge Coco (Marie shown) is a classic, they have a wide range of colors from neutral, pink, plum, reds and browns, eight shades reviewed + swatched here
  • MAC Lipstick (not shown but Sunblessed a Nordstrom exclusive featured in intro and final images) this has to be added to my favorites list because even though the formula makes my lips dry and peel a bit by day 2, I just can’t resist the classic and edgy colors, they wear really well all day long and I wear them frequently, I just have to add lip balm to my lips like crazy at night

Most Hydrating

  • Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo (Recit and Message shown) is the most hydrating and comfortable lipstick formula I’ve tried, I love the slim click up wand and the best thing about this one is it’s not just a one-way click (you can click it back down too), all the colors reviewed here

Best Sheer and Glossy Formulas

  • Louboutin Sheer Voile (Rose du Desert) is the most expensive lipstick on the market and comes with a hefty price tag, I will say that I don’t know that I think any lipstick is worth $90, but it doesn’t mean that I won’t buy one (or several), the Sheer Voile has a gorgeous glossy finish, it’s sheer but gives the lips a visible tint, review on these soon
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine (Boy shown) is what I think of as the epitome of classic beauty, Rouge Coco Shines have been a favorite for years, if you want a natural tint of effortless color, these are the way to go
  • YSL Rouge Volupte Shine (Shade 47 shown) are another favorite, they are similar to Rouge Coco Shines but the YSL is a bit more emollient and comes with a fruity mango scent (swatches of the latest Rouge Volupte Shine Oil in Stick eight shades here)

Best Liquid Lipstick Formulas

  • Too Faced Melted Chocolate are my favorites for liquid lipstick because these also have a chocolate scent! They come with a sponge tip applicator. Swatches of all the chocolate shades in this post here.
  • Anastasia Liquid Lipstick (Crush shown) come with a love-hate feeling from me. I love these because the color really does last all day long but I am not a fan of matte finish lipsticks. This one can be fixed by adding a bit of balm or clear gloss on top and then I have a lipstick that will last from morning to night and through snacks/lunch.
  • Chanel Rouge Double Intensite (shades shown Darling Pink, Bright Rose and Light Rose) is another one that will literally last all day on my lips. It’s a two step application process, first color, let dry, then top with the clear gloss on the other end. Bright Rose swatched here. Darling Pink is the best baby pink I’ve ever tried (I don’t think I’ve reviewed it) and Light Rose is a gorgeous pinky rose color too.
  • NARS Lip Cover (Get Dirty shown) is a liquid lipstick with a glossy finish. I have two shades in Get Dirty and Overheated. I believe these are limited-edition from summer, I hope NARS considers adding this formula to the permanent line because the formula is really really good. Both shades swatched on lips here.

That wraps up my lipstick favorites in honor of National Lipstick Day! What are your favorite lipstick formulas or colors?

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:26 pm

I have one of them and like it, but for me it's not love! There's only one color I like, which of course you can guess is the nude one.

  • Art Eleanore July 29, 2016 at 7:53 pm

Wait I can't read, what is your third top favorite lipstick? I see the Edward Bess, Tom Ford, as the top two?

My fave (both because of you might I add), are Tom Ford and YSL! Before i used to use the creamy liquid chanel lipsticks back in the day and Chantacaille lipsticks. I'm going to have to check out Edward Bess again!

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:27 pm

Hi Art – I didn't mention it in the post, but my third favorite is the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution.

    • Art Eleanore August 3, 2016 at 5:10 pm

      thank you for elaborating!!!

  • Liv July 29, 2016 at 8:12 pm

Funny, Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo is absolutely the most drying "lipstick" I've ever tried.
My favourite Lipstic formulas? Guerlain Rouge G and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet.

Too many faves to narrow it down! In addition to several you have listed, I'm partial to Rouge Bunny Rouge lippies. The best purchase I've made in years is a solid white, rotating lipstick tower that holds about 113 lippies and has a small footprint. I have mine organized into brands. I actually tried to load the tower with only my very favorites and I can't believe what a challenge that was! I have so many faves I'm thinking about getting another tower. Lipstick obsessed am I.

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:27 pm

      Yay for the lipstick obsessed!

  • Lexie B July 30, 2016 at 4:29 am

I love how in-depth you've gone with these! I haven't tried many high end lipsticks, just NARS πŸ™‚

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:27 pm

      Thanks Lexie!

  • Noirette Diary July 30, 2016 at 8:39 am

I love the YSL VoluptΓ© Shine lippies, specially because of that gorgeous packaging. I'm mostly into MAC Cremesheens. I also like the Nars Audacious Lipsticks for a matte finish, I get so much wear out of those. x

Looking forward to your Edward Bess lipsticks review. If you could possibly include the ingredients I would really appreciate it as I have so many allergies. Thanks for all you do!

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:29 pm

Yes I will definitely snap a pic of the box ingredients.

  • Dilara July 30, 2016 at 3:49 pm

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick is hands down the best liquid lipstick

  • Emmys Beauty Cave July 30, 2016 at 3:55 pm

I love the sound of the CT ones being matte but luminous at the same time. Im currently obsessed with the Urban Decay Vice Mega Matte Lipsticks, those bad boys last hours. I wore mine for 8 hours ate and drank and it didn't budge!

  • WHYNOTBLOG July 30, 2016 at 4:46 pm

I'm 100% going to have to pick some Bite Beauty bits up when I go to the states in December! I love the YSL ones too, I have a nude shade that I wear most days, perfect for dry lips πŸ™‚

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:29 pm

Yes you definitely need to try Bite Beauty!!

  • lildarlie July 30, 2016 at 6:03 pm

Thanks for all your lovely reviews! What do you recommend, as a formula/favorite, for a wedding day look, where you don't want to reapply often and it doesn't smear on the dress/husband/teeth? Thanks!

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:30 pm

I have yet to find one that is smudge-proof that you don't have to reapply. I would say the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks stay the longest on me and don't budge at all.

  • Emma Bought What July 30, 2016 at 8:15 pm

I really want to try the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks – they sound so good and I love matte lipsticks x

  • Eileen July 30, 2016 at 8:51 pm

With so many brands launching new lipstick lines, it is easy to get caught up in the hoopla and forget the classics. For me, those are Edwards Bess, ClΓ© de Peau, Guerlain Rouge G, and Tom Ford. And honorable mention should go to Tatcha because even though they are a skin care brand, they have created two stellar lipsticks that are the definition of what a luxury lipstick is all about–Kyoto Red and Sunrise: A Plum Blossom. For those of you who missed it or are in need of a backup, Kyoto Red is available again. It started out as a LE shade, but is so popular, Tatcha keeps restocking it. It's a gorgeous, velvety matte that leaves the lips looking smooth and soft.

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:31 pm

Thanks for sharing your favs! I hope Tatcha expands their lipstick line because both colors they launched were just so phenomenal!

  • GailInVA July 30, 2016 at 11:24 pm

I wanted to order from the Edward Bess web site earlier today but I did not see that it was secure (htpps) so I chickened out. Have you ordered from there before?

    • Eileen July 31, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Have you tried ordering via Neiman's, Bergdorff's, or QVC? I've only ordered EB from his site once and that was 7 or 8 years ago so I'm no help there. I usually order from Neiman's or QVC when there is a special promotion going on.

    • GailInVA August 1, 2016 at 12:11 am

They're almost all backordered on Neimans/Bergdorf, have not yet checked QVC tho. Thanks!

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:31 pm

Hi Gail – I have ordered from EB, I ordered a couple weeks ago and it went through just fine. I confirmed with EB that Neimans and Bergdorfs will restock soon. You may also want to check net-a-porter if you can't wait.

  • Kate Loves Makeup July 31, 2016 at 3:54 am

Oh my gosh, such a helpful post!! I love a lot of the ones you mentioned, so I will have to look into the ones that you mentioned that I have never tried. I really want to try the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo now!!

    • Sabrina August 2, 2016 at 11:32 pm

I really really love the Chanel Rouge Coco Stylos!

  • sarah July 31, 2016 at 11:07 am

I love the Chanel liquid lipstick shades you've picked, it's nice to see a non-red sometimes, since I can't rock that in the office without getting mad comments (barely anyone wears makeup…or if they do they go for the 'so natural they still look like they need makeup' look) I can get away with a mid pink without anyone asking if I'm going clubbing! Great post, really handy. Thanks! xoxo Sarah from Iheartcosmetics

  • Blushing Betta August 1, 2016 at 12:40 am

Great choices! I absolutely adore the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks, the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines are also some of my favs.

What a great roundup, some of my favourite lipstick formulas are on here. Surprised you didnt go with the Christian Louboutin Matte formula, it's so non-drying its ALMOST worth the price tag.
