Chanel Collection L.A. Sunrise for Spring 2016 – The Beauty Look Book Picks

January 3, 2016
Chanel Collection L.A. Sunrise

Spring beauty collections are usually my favorite of all the seasonal releases and the first one I’m reviewing this year is the Chanel Collection L.A. Sunrise launch for Spring 2016. I saw the collection a couple weeks ago in stores and picked up a few items. This one seems very different from the typical spring collection for Chanel – everything is very bright, vibrant and has a more summery vibe. I would say that at first glance most of it was not my cup of tea, but I think there are a couple stand outs that are not to be missed. The items I picked out:

Rouge Coco Shines in Shipshape, Mighty and Energy ($37)
Le Vernis Nail Gloss in Sunrise Trip ($28)
Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Purple Croc ($33)

Quick swatches of my picks and then more closeups and thoughts on each item:

Sunkiss Ribbon Blush is the star of the collection. It’s a stunning blush with a mix of five different shades. The surface is embossed in the most beautiful print, like a ribbon. I swatched the colors individually with a detail brush, but for the face, I just swirl a blush brush and apply to the cheeks. It’s a warm pink with coral on me – almost has a bronzed effect but in blush form if that makes sense. It adds life and warmth to the complexion with a subtle luminous glow. The powders do have shimmer but it’s not frosted and it’s finely milled. Texture is smooth and easy to blend. It’s pure love.

Many have asked how it compares to the Horizon Blush de Chanel from Spring 2012 – I miraculously still own it and swatch compared it below along with some other shades. The Spring 2012 is more pink while this year’s is more coral.

Blush Horizon de Chanel (discontinued)
Le Blush Creme de Chanel Affinite (discontinued, review here)
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Radiant Magenta (review here)
Tom Ford Blush in Wicked (review)
Chanel Blush in Tumulte (discontinued)
NARS Dual Intensity Blush in Panic

Rouge Coco Shines in Shipshape, Mighty and Energy ($37) are three bright but medium-sheer glossy lipsticks. I was immediately drawn to Mighty a cool pink. I decided to pick up the other two as well even though they are outside my comfort zone. They are bright but can be sheered out for a more wearable look. I like to apply these straight from the tube, but you can get more coverage and pigment if you apply with a lip brush. These are scent-free and taste-free. Lasting power is average – it has a glossy finish so it’s not super long lasting. At the same time it’s not one that will disappear within the hour (as long as you don’t drink or eat) but I don’t mind reapplying. They have a smooth luxurious feel and I find them moisturizing on the lips.

Swatches straight from the tube and then with a lip brush next to it:

On these lip swatches the colors are applied straight from the tube:

Le Vernis Nail Gloss in Sunrise Trip ($28) is a new formula of nail polish for Chanel. It’s called a Nail Gloss and it is indeed different from the regular Chanel polish. It looks almost navy black in the bottle but it has a jelly finish which applies as a bright gel-like color. It’s a bright but deep blue purple color. In some light it looks more purple, in others it appears more blue. It has a flawless smooth jelly finish that is streak free. I do get even coverage with two coats and the coverage is impressive for a jelly gel. You can still see a tiny bit of the nail underneath but there are no streaks.

Here it is with two coats and one coat of the Chanel Le Top Coat, but even without the top coat it has a very high-gloss finish that is very reflective, it’s so shiny it twinkles in direct sun as captured by the shot below:

Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Purple Croc ($33) it’s been a while since I’ve given anything a blatant thumbs down review. I am really picky with what I feature on this blog, and I am particular about what I purchase. If I’m going to share something with my readers I want it to be worth their while to read about. Even with items I am iffy about I try to review it with the thought that something that doesn’t appeal to me, might still appeal to someone else and try my best to be objective. I swatched this on my hand at the counter and it looked so pretty. It’s a unique metallic pencil with the prettiest bright violet shimmers. It’s possible mine could just be a dud, but I am really sad that this one is a complete fail.

Swatched with a very heavy hand:

The upside is that it’s smooth and glides onto the skin without any tugging. The downside is that it’s super sheer with one swipe, with several swipes back and forth I can build more color, but it’s very blotchy as a liner. Another downside is that it’s so creamy it never really set on my eyes which is strange because I’ve had such good experiences with other colors in this formula. I thought since the pencil acted more like a cream shadow I could smudge it on my eyes along the lash line as a cream shadow but once smudged the color just disappeared and it looks like a smokey mess. If you’ve tried any of the eyeliners in the spring collection please let me know your thoughts. I’ve tried several attempts to make this one work and so far it’s not going well.

There are some other items in the collection that I passed on. There are three Illusion D’Ombres and I thought I would fall in love with the Moonlight Pink shade – it’s a lovely nude pink, but when I swiped it on my hand it matched my skintone so I suspected it wouldn’t show up on the lids. It’s still calling my name so there’s a chance I might go back and try it again. The other two Griffith Green and Ocean Light were clearly outside of my comfort zone so I passed. There is also supposed to be a quad but I haven’t seen it anywhere yet – I’ve heard that it’s a bright one and that my local counters didn’t receive it but are expecting it to arrive any day. There are two other Stylo Yeux Pencils in a Blue and Green Shade, they looked super bright at the counter so I didn’t swatch them. The last item I passed on was the Rouge Double in Tender Beige. I’m not sure if this is a new color or a repromote – but I passed as well.

Overall, I think the winner is the Sunkiss Ribbon Blush. It’s so pretty and the pigment and texture are really good. It’s easy to blend and adds a nice glow to the skin. There’s enough color that it shows up but it’s not over the top bright. Sunrise Trip is a lovely color with a unique gel formula. I really like it but for right now it seems to have more of a summer vibe rather than spring. Still I do recommend it – I don’t own anything like it and do think it’s unique.

You can find Chanel spring at counters now. Online at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Chanel.com.

Did you pick up anything from the Collection LA Sunrise launch? If yes, what did you think?

Rachel, I have the blush. It's pretty but not special. I recommend you get either the CHANEL Vibration (if it's still available) or the new Guerlain Smile blush for spring. It's gorgeous.

    • I have Vibration which I love and was wondering whether I needed this blush.

    • Hi Rachel – I think the Spring Blush is a must-have in my opinion, it's wonderfully glowy and has such a great mix of colors!

I have left similar comments on other beauty blogs about this collection so here goes. I am horribly disappointed in CHANEL. Let me say first that I have been a CHANEL makeup devotee since birth–well, almost. My mom and my grandmother both wore CHANEL, makeup and clothes. When I first started seeing blog posts about the LA Sunrise Collection I was shocked at the vibrancy but still intended to buy. I was especially interested in the Tisse Beverly Hills eye quad. When the collection actually launched, there was no Tisse BH eye quad. In fact, there was only the old Tisse Camelia which I already had (I bought every new Tisse when they were launced). So I bought only the Sunrise Ribbon highlighter, thinking that the Tisse BH would come out later. It has not nor will it. Last week I contacted CHANEL via its online site. All that evening my husband & I sat with our mouths agape at the way we were lied to, deceived, made to feel like boobs, and treated in a condescending manner unfit for any business entity, especially one of the caliber of CHANEL. When I originally asked when the Tisse BH was coming out, they evaded my Q and told me the quad was on the site. No, I persisted, I want to know when the Tisse BH is coming out. Eventually I was communicating with at least 2 different CHANEL reps. I never received a straight answer. They told me all I had to do was click on the backorder button & the quad would be back-ordered for me. No go. The backorder button simply said there is no code for this product. Another rep told me to simply order the Tisse BH from the site. Sorry, it was not there. They called me they said to discuss this situation over the phone. No I said my phone has not rung. Turned out that although I had left my number in every email I had sent them that night they had used the wrong number. Eventually they left a message telling me to call them so that they could walk me through the order procedure. By that time I'd put my husband on the phone. And guess what? Everything they told him to do failed for them as it had for us. This is the company that came out recently with the Golden Sun blush, described it as new when it was not; the same company that launched the Tweed Pink blush as new, when it was not; that promoted the Rouge Noir polish for holiday & then subbed in Vamp; and now that there is no Tisse BH they subbed in Camelia for that. No more CHANEL for me. Lie to me, treat me like a moron, it's goodbye.

It's only make up. Chill out.

    • How frustrating. I understand why you are upset. The delay reminds me of what happened with Signe Particulier which followed the rest of the collection by over a month, and then was poorly formulated. I would guess they are having formulation issues yet again and for some reason hiding that. But giving people the runaround is ridiculous.

    • Sorry that you feel this way Nemo – but I understand your frustrations. I did a backorder on Chanel.com a few years ago, the order went through but the item did not arrive for a long time.

I wonder if the Tisse BH quad will arrive later like the one for holiday did.

    • Vamp is the american equivalent of Rouge Noir (Europe). They are exactly the same thing. This is the stping collection and it is only just December. Relax and you fill find it. As said above, it's only make up.

    • it's listed on the nordstrom website with a ship date of 2/5. not sure how accurate that is..doesn't change the fact that the people weren't helpful on the phone i guess

  • Such a gorgeous collection! The blush looks beautiful. x

    • Thanks Amy – yes the blush is stunning!

  • This blush is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!! Great review and swatches ๐Ÿ™‚

    New in Makeup

    • Glad you liked the swatches! Yes the blush is stunning!!!

  • I will get Sun Kissed Ribbon Palette and the Le Vernis which look spectacular in your photo. Rouge Coco Shine Energy looks amazing on you Sabrina. Nemo…..I am not surprised you are so unhappy with Chanel after that treatment. I have been saying for a while Chanel Beauty is losing it's way and needs a real kick up its elegant behind…….you can't even get samples in Selfridges of anything because Chanel are literally supplying 5 / 10 pieces with each product launch. Well they are going to waiting list clients, I mean a waiting list for a sample? Whoever heard of such a nonsense. I have been told that they are designing to appeal to Asia first and foremost as that is now their biggest market. There just seems to be real confusion in the brand at the moment.

    • Thank you Amanda! I think Energy is such a pretty vibrant but wearable coral pink red. I've been told that samples at the counter are super limited too. I like them to test newer skincare items but yes, they are hard to come by these days.

  • Happy New Year, Sabrina! I hope 2016 will be filled with all the blessings you could possibly desire–for you, your husband, your family, and everyone else you hold near and dear.

LA Sunrise? Nah! Not really. But, a rose by any other name. . . and Chanel has certainly come out with a bright and cheerful collection this year. When I went to see it at the counter, like Nemo, I was terribly disappointed to see that Tissรฉ Beverly Hills was not available. Tissรฉ Rhapsodie (last year's Asian exclusive) had been put in the display slot and the SA was very frustrated about the situation as she had had so many customer requests for the new quad. I can easily understand why. With the Tissรฉ formula it is easy to control the intensity of the colors and to blend them seamlessly. For the woman who is not drawn to the bold (and dare I say garish?) green and blue of the ID'O, the quad is a far more workable, yet still colorful, choice. Oh well, unless the quad makes a fast appearance, it will be forgotten once all the other spring collections start arriving on counter. Too bad, Chanel.

As for the blush, in the pan, it is to die for; swatched on my hand, it is gorgeous; swept on my cheeks, it is—orange! I was so disappointed because it looked beautiful on the two SAs who were wearing it ๐Ÿ™ But, although it didn't work for me, this lovely luminous combination of colors will be simply stunning on so many of you. Lucky you!

All I ended up purchasing was the RC Shine in Energy. Oh well, perhaps I'll have better luck with some of the other spring collections.

    • Nemo

Hi, Eileen! It is so GOOD to hear from you! The best of New Year blessings to you! What do you think's going on with CHANEL? I do agree that they are selling out the Americans to the Asians etc. They get the best and we loyal American customers get what Johnny shot at as my great grandmother would say!

    • No sooner did I say that perhaps I'd have better luck with other brands, than pictures of Tom Ford spring started to emerge on Chic Profile and I began to hyperventilate! LOL There are 8 new "patent finish" lipsticks in a pen-type format, 8 cream eyeshadows (lots of neutrals for you, Sabrina :-)), and 6 eyeliners. Woo-hoo!

    • Hi Eileen – I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well! I think the blush is indeed to die for, but I can see how it can pull orangey and warm on fair skins. On me I was surprised to see how warm it was which is why I described it more like a bronzer even though on the arms and swatches it doesn't appear so. On the face it does warm up!

Tom Ford Spring = amazing. I can't wait.

    • I have this and tried it with a very delicate hand because I am fair (more of a slightly warmish neutral) and can see how it could go orange. Definitely start slowly and see how the color builds. It's so pretty!

    • Hi Evelyn,
I'm fair, but my undertones are actually peach and I'm sure that's what contributed to the orange crush appearance when the blusher was applied to my cheeks. Whenever I fall in love with an intensely pigemented blusher (i.e. Tom Ford Wicked), I use a fan brush and that gives me the color without the intensity. Perhaps I'll take a clean fan to the counter and give it another try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained ๐Ÿ™‚

    Happy New Year!

I'm sorry that you're having such a bad time with the eyeliner- it was one of the 2 items (the nail polish being the other) that I picked up and I adore it. I wonder if this is like the Stylo Yeux Waterproofs of old- some batches ran really awful and others great? I haven't had the issues with the purple eyeliner that you have. It's a bit drier than, say, Perle de Lune, but workable for me.

    • Thanks for the input – based on the comments and feedback I've received it does appear there might have been inconsistencies with the production. I can't recall 100% what I thought when I swatched it at the counter, but I'm pretty sure it must have had a decent color payoff otherwise I can't imagine why I would have bought it.

I'm going to investigate and see if I can exchange it for another one to see if the formula of the one I bought is a dud.

I know in past collections others have reported the Stylo Yeuxs to be less than stellar while I've had no issues so I do suspect you're right!

  • Gail

Have to agree with Anonymous above Sabrina. I'm not having problems with the purple liner. I really like it on. Maybe exchange yours? In any case….Happy New Year! Hope you have a happy and healthy 2016!

    • Thank you Gail! I'm going to try and exchange it, will update the post if I find one that's better ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy New Year to you as well!

I live in Sydney, Australia and we always get the same collections as the northern hemisphere even though the seasons are out of whack, the Spring Collection is timely though for our mid-summer weather. Amazingly a Chanel boutique opened near me a year ago and I have just contacted them on the phone. LA Sunrise has not officially launched in Australia but they have already sold out of whatever Tisse Hollywood stock they had.
As to the earlier comment by Anon. Yes, it is only makeup but the reason we are on these blogs is that it is our obsession and hobby. I would think twice before discussing it with any of my friends for fear of coming across as too shallow.
Nemo, I'm impressed that you have such a supportive husband.
As to Chanel as an organisation I'm afraid their sales are so huge they don't really care when they stuff up and disappoint customers. They're like a bad boyfriend that one keeps going back to.
    Frances

Hi, Anonymous. Thanks for your comment about my wonderful husband. I am so blessed to have him. He is so kind and patient. He enjoys seeing me happy and likes to make me happy. A very humble and kind person. Plus, he is in charge of the credit card, not me. I am sure you can understand why!!!!!!!!!

    • Hi Frances – sorry to hear that Tisse quad sold out in Australia, so odd about the distribution/launch of this one!

  • Anonymous

I absolutely love the blush. I usually run my brush diagonally and it gives me such a healthy, glowy look. I also bought Mighty and Energy and in addition to loving their names as mantra for the new year, I also love the color. The color of Purple Choc is lovely, will need to wear it a few more times for a verdict. Hopefully, the quad will arrive soon.
    Best, Tanja

    • Great picks Tanja! Would love to hear your thoughts on the eyeliner ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi,

This is a partial response to Nemo. I have had the Golden Sun blush for years!!! I can't believe Chanel is out and out lying to their customers. It is extremely disingenuous, especially these days when at a click of a finger, the truth is right there for everyone to read. It appears that they really don't care about their customers. Nowadays, there are so many new and affordable lines, with so many new and exciting formulas, They can not afford to be so lackadaisical about not just the marketing, but also being honest. We can all understand if something is sold out or even if the product doesn't make it production. They need to communicate with us in an honest fashion. We understand that things can go wrong in the factory, but they should definitely inform us that way poor Nemo is not calling a million stores! I am not sure how long Chanel can try to get over on there customers. There is just too much money to lose!
On another note, Happy New Year!

  • Sandi

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had a bit of trouble with the Stylo Yeux. I was worried I just have had too heavy of a hand with them but after two bad runs with them lately, I'm starting to give them more of a squinty eye. Normally I only do liquid liner, but the Stylo always comes in such gorgeous shades I find myself being tempted. Oh well, as much as I love Chanel, I will find another brand for the dreamy pencil look! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Sandi – I think we might have gotten a bad batch. Hopefully you can exchange, I'm going to try to do the same with mine. I've had such a good experience with other Stylo Yeux Pencils.

  • Happy New Year Sabrina!
Such a vibrant and bright collection. Love your picks. I am waiting for the collection to launch here in India and play with it ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Happy New Year to you as well! Hope it will launch in India soon! The lip colors are very pretty and cheerful ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Oh my! The Sunkiss Ribbon Blush is soooo pretty. Great color combos that are really so perfect for my skin type. So excited to try one!

  • Kristina aka @cubicledweller

Beautiful post! I have the Purple Choc eyeliner and I'm not having any problems with it, plus, it stays on all day, which is typical of the stylo eyeliners. I'm sure you're using primer on the lid? I wonder if your pencil was a dud or something? Sorry that it is your experience!

    • Hi Kristina – thanks for the input! Yes I am a long-time stylo yeux user and haven't ever had issues. I think mine might be a dud.

  • Oooohhh this blush looks stunning! It may need to come home with me.
    The Beauty Bloss

    • Hope you can test it soon!

  • GORRRRGEOUS post!!!

  • Darn, I was going to pick up the eyeliner! What a bummer! Everything else looks amazing especially the nail color!

  • If it helps at all, Tissรฉ Beverly Hills is available in Canada at The Bay and Holt Renfrew. Maybe ordering is an option?

Thanks for the swatches. The purple eyeliner was one of the items that I ordered today. I hope that it works out.

    • R

Speaking of Canada, many stores that I've contacted locally (Vancouver) seem to be selling out of the Sunkiss Ribbon blush, so I decided to order on-line from The Bay. I was very surprised to notice that the blush is selling here for $57 CAD vs in the US at $70. With our low dollar, the Canadian price works out to about $40 USD! I'm assuming we have the same size/version as the US, right? Maybe I should purchase a back up!

  • I just got the Sunkiss Ribbon Blush today! All the swatches I've seen online (including your lovely, as always, swatches) have been gorgeous. I'm excited to try it! I also got the Griffith Green eyeshadow last week. I love greens, but I hope it's not too glittery…that irritates my eyes. I used to live in LA, so this is also kind of a nostalgic collection for me. I used to go biking in Griffith Park all the time. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hi Sabrina! Love your reviews as always, I decided to go for it with the blush based on your adoration and I'm SO glad I did, I adore it, reach for it everyday now. I'm curious to hear how your replacement eyeliner goes because I also got and love the purple eyeliner. I'm having no issues at all with it, in fact…I'm thinking of getting a backup I love it so much!

  • Jay

Nice colors! I will buy one for sure. Thanks for great recommendation.
