Neutral Creamy Shimmer Wash Eye Shadows | NARS, By Terry, Laura Mercier, RMS and Chanel

June 25, 2014
Lately I’ve been a fan of these swipe and go shimmery wash eyeshadows. I like a creamy texture so there’s no extra base needed for good pigment and blending. I like neutrals but have discovered a few non-nude shadows I find good for color, dimension and glow. Just add a simple black or bronze liner and mascara and you’re good to go (for lazy makeup days). I also find them good for touch ups if you’re transitioning from day to night to add a bit of depth to the eyes. The creamy textures mean you apply straight from the tube if it’s a twist up stick or right from the compact with your fingers and smudge/blend easily. My current favorite neutrals:
  • NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Iraklion ($25) is a mauve rose quartz taupe fawn shimmer. It blends out to a sheer finish but nicely contours the lids. You can layer for more color and it also works well as a base for powder shadows but won’t change the color.
  • Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Rose Gold ($26) is a shimmery gold with a slight hint of pink tones, on me it pulls more champagne gold but the pink prevents it from being a pure yellow gold. It’s on the creamy side so if you have oily lids you may need a matte base underneath.
  • By Terry Ombre Blackstar ($43 each) in Ombre Mercure (interesting oyster that flashes gold and a bit of green sparkle), Frozen Quartz (cool medium pink sparkle) and Misty Rock (plum pink) are all intense creamy shadows, I adore each of them alone on the lid with a simple liner. They are on the pricey side but the quality, texture and lasting power make these worth every penny.
  • RMS Cream Eyeshadow in Solar ($28) is something I use on a weekly basis, alone or as a base, there’s something so pretty about a rich gold shimmer for the eyes that warms up the complexion (review here)
  • Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Emerville ($36) is a classic champagne peach shimmer. I think it’s one neutral shimmer everyone should have in their beauty collection. It makes a lovely wash all over the lids.
  • NARS Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows ($29 each) in Europa and Andromeda (reviews here) are nice when layered together for that simple polished glow look for the eyes.

Swatched side by side you can see they look intense when swatched straight from the tube, the pigment is good and textures are super easy to blend and layer. They aren’t quite as frosty when you blend them out. My assessment for shimmer levels:
  • Most shimmery are the By Terry Ombre Blackstar sticks but if you’ve tried these you know they blend out really nicely but maintain the color. RMS Solar is on the shimmery side as well but the gold base blends well with my natural skintone almost like a contour.
  • Medium shimmers are Laura Mercier Rose Gold and Chanel Emerville.
  • Sheer shimmers are NARS Iraklion and Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows in Europa and Andromeda (most in this formula are intense, but I have the softest ones).

What are your favorite creamy shimmer shadows for an all over wash? Do you have any swipe and go kind of shadows you love? Or are you one who usually prefers to layer more color on the eyes?

  • I love using Chanel Convoitise as a simple wash over the lid. Also, while they're not cream eyeshadows, I'm a big fan of both MAC Ricepaper and Naked Lunch eyeshadows — they look gorgeous as a wash over the lids!

    • I love those colors too πŸ™‚ MAC Naked Lunch is such a classic no fuss shade!

  • Aw frozen quartz and rose gold are so beautiful! Thank you for this pretty post!

  • I just bought Chanel Emerveille after watching Lisa Eldridge's Sophie Dahl tutorial, and I really like it, though I'm still experimenting with how to best apply it. What's your favorite way?

    • I like applying Chanel Emerville all over the lids with my fingers, then using a neutral quad like Chanel Raffinement on top πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Sabrina! And thank you for your lovely reviews. Your blog is definitely one of my favorite beauty blogs!

  • Hi Sabrina,

What a lovely set of highlighting shades! I've been loving simple sheer shadows lately as well. I love the look of NARS Andromeda here – it's so brightening! I've been crushing on the NARS dual intensity shadow in Cassiopeia. It seems like another lovely swipe and go shade πŸ™‚

  • I'm dying to try a Chanel Illusion d'Ombre soooo bad, I always end up putting eyeshadow on top on cream products anyway πŸ™ lol!

    • Thank you for letting us all know!

  • I am obsessed with Misty Rock at moment! I love it with smokey dark brown eyeliner.

    • I agree – Misty Rock is pretty awesome πŸ™‚

I love the Mally Beauty Evercolor Shadow Sticks especially in bronze for an all over eye color. They last forever and are so easy to apply.

  • Aah By Terry! <3 They look so incredibly beautiful but insanely expensive! I have a couple of Chanel illusion d'ombre, ebloui and mirage and I love them! Solar looks really pretty but I have heard it creases a lot.. due to the coconut bas.. is that true?

  • All these colors look so nice! It's time I start looking for some rose gold shimmer eyeshadows.

  • Great post, I've been all about the creams and crayons lately too!! My picks are mostly bronze related though. I'm really enjoying Bobbi Brown Golden Bronze shadow pencil (great with her Sapphire gel eyeliner pencil!), Chanel New Moon and Initiation Illusion d "ombres, and quite the selection of Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks (Khaki, Sand Glow and Cocoa for example) and By Terry Ombre Blackstars (Misty Rock and bronze Moon are tops). Consider me addicted. The jury is still out on my Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Golden Quartz, though. It unexpectedly contains huge chunks of glitter, alas.

  • The By Terry sticks are so beautiful, and they just make me so curious about cream shadows. I've never used any cream shadows before, I always imagine they would just start creasing like crazy. So I was wondering how you use them? Do you set them with a powder or eyeshadow, or do you just roll out with just the cream?

  • Tom Ford's Pink Haze from last Summer is a winner for me but I use Emerveille a lot too. Looks great swiped over lid with a little pencil on the water line and mascara. Susan, London

  • Another Tom Ford Pink Haze fan here! I adore Pink Haze and Escapade from last summer's collection and find they work beautifully together to produce one of my favorite eye looks. I particularly like that they are pearly rather than sparkly which makes them better suited to day or office. I also have to give TF kudos for quality. I've had my cream shadows over a year and they have not dried out or pulled away from the jar. They're still smooth, creamy, and a breeze to blend. I also love ByTerry's Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon and Laura Mercier's Caviar Stick in Amethyst which isn't really amethyst at all πŸ™‚ I haven't had much luck with Chanel's Illusion D'Ombre. There is something about the formula which irritates my eyes πŸ™

  • I love By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Blonde, this year I'm loving Chanel Illusion D'Ombre in New Moon.

  • NARS Iraklion is beautiful. I must investigate! Off to Sephora, I go.

  • I have heard so many people talk about the By Terry Ombre Blackstar's! I want to try one so badly, they look so pretty! πŸ™‚

  • OMG!!! So many to choose from. I simply cannot pick the best ones for all of them are soooo pretty. I usually prefer these shades and kinda shimmery.

  • Your photographs are stunning! xx
