YSL Touche d’Or Highlighter & Colorama Palette

November 18, 2010

I’m slowly getting into YSL. It’s one brand I have long resisted but every once in a while something catches my eye. The holiday collection has the most beautiful highlighters this season with the new touche eclat-type highlighter and soft sparkling pink pressed shimmer powder.

I may be the one lone woman who doesn’t like the Touche Eclat from YSL, but I fell in love with the Touche d’Or Golden Touch Highlighter ($40) for holiday. It’s named “golden” but on my skin it went on more neutral-champagne than gold. It has a beautiful sparkle finish. I personally found it a bit too sparkly for every-day wear on the face, but it’s lovely on the eyes. If you’re looking for a glowy cream highlighter without too much sparkle opt for NARS Luxor Multiple or Edward Bess All Over Seduction in Sunlight or Afterglow.

The pressed Metallic Shimmer Powder in Colorama ($65) is absolutely stunning. It comes encased in a metallic leather compact which is similar in color to the Pink Gold Nail Color. The powder is finely milled and goes on a light pink shimmer. On my Chanel Shell Teint Innocence skintone it’s not too pale that it’s frosty. It has a lovely soft glowy finish on my cheeks. I’m not the biggest fan of the compact design but at least it’s sturdy. The product is just so gorgeous that I can overlook the flashy packaging and still love this. I find this similar in concept to Armani’s Blush #12 – in the compact and swatched on the hand it looks too light to be a blush, but on the cheeks it gives a wonderful soft glow. If Armani’s #12 worked on you, then chances are you’ll really like this highlighter. If Armani’s #12 didn’t work, then perhaps you might find this too subtle. I do think the YSL will serve as a more pigmented highlighter for darker/tan skintones though. The Armani is sheerer in finish which is why it might not show up so well on darker skins.

My local Bloomingdales had a national event with a lovely GWP which made the high price tag more justifiable. My favorite item out of all the goodies was the full-sized powder brush which I look forward to trying out soon.

I love this powder!! It's such a pretty highlighter shade. πŸ™‚

….Nice GWP too. That's a great size blush brush!

  • Connie – the GWP is no longer available, it was a one-day event last week and the sales associate threw in the brush as a one-off special. If you have a Nordstroms near you check for their trend show schedule – I've seen really good GWPs at those events!

Anonymous – the highlighter is simply to die for.

  • Oh wow that highlighter is so gorgeous!

Touche D'Or is one of my all time favorites for creating a festive, golden, holiday eye. Because I'm in my sixties, I can't wear a lot of glitter or shimmer on the inner corners of my eyes. There are also those women of all ages who just don't like the fairy dust. Touche D'Or to the rescue! I can use it on my eyelid for a soft delicate gleam, for stronger glints of gold, or for a full on metallic look without it drawing attention to that dreaded harbinger of faded youth– crepeiness in the eye area πŸ™ And, needless to say, this is beautiful used as a highlighter on the brow bone or on the cheekbones.

  • I love the look of the pink gold nail polish! The highlighter is lovely as well πŸ™‚

  • Sabrina,
You are NOT alone, girl! I tried a sample of the YSH Touche Eclat is was waaay too pink for me. The Golden one looks lovely though, I may have to try again πŸ™‚

  • Eileen, Thanks for your input for us women "of a certain age"! It's very helpful to hear your comments on the products that you have tried. πŸ™‚

  • the powder is really beautiful. you d use it on top of your regular powder? i am not a fan of touche eclat….also i love your nail vernish. what is it?

  • Honor

Great review as usual, thank you Sabrina, how does The highlighter compare in term of shimmers to The Bobbi Brown beige shimmerbrick or The lauder/Tom pecheux highlight powder ? it does not look too shimmery on your arm. And by The way, I am like you, i never really understood The craze around touche Γ©clat .

  • Oh the Highlighter Powder looks awsome, I really need to check that one out myself. I really had to laugh whilst reading that you thought you were the one lone woman who doesn't like the Touche Eclat from YSL – I don't like the Touche Eclat eighter… πŸ˜‰

thanks for a good review =)

how would you compare this highlighter to MAC by candlelight MSF?

Thanks for the swatches! The powder looks beautiful. I as well have held off on YSL, seemed like yet another h/e line, that said, I adore their reformulation of the black pencil e/l. Touche eclat did nothing for me, either, alone or over concealer. I do love their foundations, though, gorgeous shades.

  • Hi Sabrina,
The powder looks drop dead gorgeous! To Sephora I go… I am glad Touche Eclat finally expanded their shade offerings…none were ever right for me. B-T-W, the highlighter on Maybelline's Rewind Concealer is equivalent to Touche at a fraction of the price!

  • you always find the BEST products! i need that YSL highlighter pen! xo

  • AcademicGirl

The powder looks a lot like Becca Angel PSP.
