I’m thrilled to announce the Away Mini Suitcases are back! They are available for a limited run during the holiday season individually or in a few gift set options. This year the Mini is available in 9 core colors, 2 limited-edition winter colors Halo and Aurora, plus the Aluminum Edition. Last year I ordered lots of these to give as gifts. I think they’re perfect for anyone! Available online at Away Travel or in any one of their stores in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin or London.
You can order individually (empty), add a gift card, or pick one of their pre-filled sets. The options and pricing this year are as follows:
- The Mini ($35 each)
- The Mini Aluminum Edition ($55 each)
- Three Gift Set Options:
- The Essential Set ($45) or The Essential Set Aluminum Edition ($65)
- The Beauty Set ($75) or The Beauty Set Aluminum Edition ($95)
- The Grooming Set ($75) or The Grooming Set Set Aluminum Edition ($95)
Today I have a detailed review of two of the sets in The Grooming and The Beauty Set, plus a look at The Aluminum Edition and the new color Halo (which also comes in the suitcases as part of their Solstice Collection). I ordered quite a few of the colors over the years and have used them many times. They’ve held up really well! I love that they have a hard exterior case to protect things you don’t want to get squished like sunglasses or squeezable tubes etc.
Dimensions of all the minis are 7 inches tall, 5 inches wide and 3 inches deep. The regular colors have a zip around closure with two zippers. The Aluminum Edition has a clasp snap closure. Interior is the same in both, it’s an open compartment with one mesh pocket. You can mix and match any of the set contents with color of your choice. I love that they also have empty ones so you can fill them with your own travel favorites. Below is a look at Halo which is a glossy ice white, it’s really pretty!
The Grooming Set
The Grooming Set has Maapilim Lip Balm Grapefruit and Lavender (.5 fl oz), Haeckles Seaweed Geranium Hand Balm (1.7 fl oz), Grown Alchemist Gentle Facial Cleanser (1.69 fl oz), Baxter Exfoliating Soap Full-Size and a Kent’s Folding Comb. Shown above stuffed into one of the Away Everywhere Bags which I really like for travel. They’re the perfect size for carry ons and have a flap in the back you can slip onto the handle of the suitcases! I wish they would keep the leather as a permanent part of the collection, but the nylon ones are also really nice.
The Beauty Set
The Beauty Set has five cute beauty minis including a Tata Harper Skincare Serum (10 ml), Caudalie Beauty Elixir (30 ml/1 fl oz), Klorane Dry Shampoo (50 ml/1 oz), Nuori Copenhagen Lip Treat (15 ml/0.5 fl oz), and a Mount Lai Mini Jade Roller. I think the face roller is the cutest! I did a quick search online for individual items and found them all separately except for the Tata Harper. The Gift Set is priced at a better value than buying the items individually, but you can always fill them with your own picks 🙂
This one shown above is the Blush Mini inside the limited-edition Dawn Everywhere Bag. It’s a satin fabric material that’s an iridescent pink with leather trim. I have yet to use this as I just received it – first impressions are that it softens nicely as it moves. Since it’s a fabric material I do think it won’t be quite as sturdy/stain resistant as the nylon or leather but I can review it in a separate post if you’re interested.
A look at the regular Away Mini vs The Aluminum Edition Mini. Both are the same dimensions. Differences are the material, closures and the Aluminum one opens up wider. The two Solstice Colors Halo and Aurora this season have a glossy finish, but all the colors in the regular lineup (like Black, Sand, Blush, etc.) have a textured finish. If you go to their website you’ll see the texture better on the stock images.
Inside is an open compartment with a mesh flap:
Side closures differences, regular ones have a zipper while the Aluminum has a clasp:
I’ve used these on flights and on road trips. They’re nice to keep essentials handy for quick access. I also put sunglasses inside sometimes! Everytime I fly and snap one of these on Instagram I’m flooded with questions about liquids and TSA restrictions. I always put everything in a quart size bag at home to make sure it fits first, if it all fits I pack it into a mini case. I bring an extra empty zip lock bag with me just in case they ask me to take all the contents out at security, but so far the airlines I’ve flown have taken a look at the case (this one or the Anya Hindmarch one I use) and given it the ok based on an eyeball estimate. It really depends on the airline and country you’re traveling to but if you’re carrying a lot of liquids the best option is to just check it with your luggage. If you want to keep your liquids in the clear bag until you pass through security that’s also an option.
One example of some beauty items I fit inside. If you want to know what I travel with you can see any of my Packing Posts by clicking on the tag.
Overall LOVE! I’ve loved these for years now and am excited every time they are launched for the holiday. I think they make the perfect stocking stuffers for anyone. I ordered so many last year and everyone loved them. This is the first time they’ve offered the Aluminum Edition and I’ve eyed (actually drooled over) the beautiful silver suitcases every time I’ve been in an Away store. Based on my lifestyle and preference I think the regular versions of the suitcases and minis are my preference. The Aluminum ones are beautiful, I’d just be afraid about denting or scratching it! That being said with travel and checking bags one really does need to get over the scratches because they’re bound to happen!
Quick peek at some other colors from last year’s post in case you’re wondering what they look like for scale. They still have the Brick (reddish color) and Asphalt (grey) as part of their core lineup:
I’m in the process of putting together a dedicated suitcase luggage review for you on the different size options. I have reviewed and featured the Carry On and Bigger Carry On in multiple Travel Posts which you can refer back to for now. I really love the Bigger Carry On out of all the sizes I’ve tried. We did recently get a Medium Size which seems more practical for week long trips. On a few vacations we ended up taking 3 Bigger Carry-On Suitcases with us because Andrew’s shoes are so big and I like to bring things home from travel (we did check them).
I hope this review gives you all the details you need if you don’t have an Away store near you! I highly recommend them. I really love everything from Away and am so thrilled to be one of their Collective Ambassadors for the year. You can find The Minis online at Away Travel for a limited-time this holiday and at any one of their free-standing stores.
Away minis + bags provided for review.

Oh my goodness. Thanks for this review. The timing is perfect!! Now I must decide on a color.
Decisions, decisions … 🙂
This looks so cute. This is the first time I’ve seen this. Perfect timing. We’re planning for an overseas trip.
Perfect timing indeed!
Thank you so much for the comprehensive review and on the same day these minis launched agin. I wanted to get one or two before they sell out but didn’t know which ones I wanted. After reading your review, I have made my decision.
Awesome! Glad the review helped 🙂
so cute!
Do you have a preference for the zipper close or clasp closure?
No preference! Both are really nice, although the zippers lie flat against the case while the Aluminum clasp and hinges stick out a little. Not a deal breaker though, it’s really well made!
I kinda like the zippered ones just because the colors are fun!
Thanks, that’s helpful!
These are irresistible — just bought one each for me and my niece!
How cute! She’s going to love it!
These mini suitcases are beyond adorable! Need to check these out!
Thank you for this! I purchased 2 for gifts and one for myself! Sad the beauty set was all sold out by the time I got there, but I scored the essential sets!
When I travel my travel essentials are: a good hand lotion, a spare set of lenses and when I fly a good clear mask(my skin gets super dry when I fly).
I always bring my skincare and gadget chargers with me when travelling!!
My skincare, my smartphone, and my ereader are the things without which I cannot travel!
skincare, good shoes and socks
I always bring lip balm, tubing mascara, and all my devices.
in terms of skincare, i can’t travel without my saturday skin spotlight sheet masks, drunk elephant marula oil, and a hand sanitizer!
My travel essentials are dry shampoo (I’m still searching for my holy grail), chargers and smart phone, and a great moisturizer.
My travel essentials are my skincare, makeup and iPad.
My travel essentials are my skincare, makeup and my phone!
Skincare, makeup and phone for taking pictures.
I always pack FAB ultra repair cream, micellar water, and rosebud salve!
I really like the idea of the mini Away….especially for those of us who might have a hard time justifying the expensive of the full size luggage. My 3 travel essentials are lip balm (love Dior), a mini mascara, and extra ziplock bags (which always seem to come in very very handy!).
Anti-bacterial wipes, Bose noise cancelling headphones, hand lotion
I always bring hand sanitizer, lip balm, and hand lotion.
I have two kids under 4 so it’s been a minute since I’ve gotten to travel. But when I did, I tried to keep my skincare and makeup simple and just bring staples. Day and night creams, gentle face wash, and mascara are probably top three.
A non-drying hand sanitizer, a soothing facial moisturizer and a Power Bank are my travel must-haves.
I bring my iPad, lotion, and my makeup.
I found 10 ml size airless pump bottles on Amazon which are perfect for transporting my extensive skincare regimen 🙂 Other than that, the Avon intensive hand lotion I’ve been using for a decade and lip balm (Jack Black/Lanolips) are my essentials.
When I travel I always bring my ghd hairdryer, drunk elephant moisturizer, and drunk elephant lippe
My travel essentials are hand cream, makeup wipes and a great sunscreen.
Travel essentials — sunscreen adjusted to where I’m going to be, wipes, and lipstick!
My essentials are sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer. All about the dry skin!
I always bring my fresh soy cleanser, hand lotion, and vaseline for lips when I travel!
I didn’t get a chance to comment, but after I saw your post the other day I ordered the mini in Aurora and I can’t wait until it comes! I missed out last year!
My travel essentials are headphones, lip balm and my Kindle!
That Away Mini sure can fit a lot of stuff! I’d fill that up with my tinted lip balms, face cream, and hand cream.
I always take my Sony noise cancelling headphones, portal phone chargers, and multiple lightning cords for my Apple iPhone and iPad.
I always bring sunscreen, my Aquis hair towel (the waffle one because it’s not linty), and baby wipes, even though my “baby” is now 26.
When I travel I always bring facial wipes (so I don’t need to bring a liquid cleanser that could leak in my bag), plenty of lip balm – enough to keep in my bag and pockets, and lotion because dry skin drives me nuts!
I always bring hand sanitiser, lip balm, hand lotion, sunscreen, dry shampoo and my Kindle.
Travel essentials for a long flight are any lanolips product to hydrate, my ipod to listen to podcasts and a pillow! bc sleep is a must
I always need a hydrating sleeping mask, lip balm and face mist when I travel
Always bring wipes, facial mist and a good lip balm.
I always have to bring sunscreen, wipes and a great bright lipstick!
I always take my sunscreen, gum for flight headaches and hourglass oil for preventing chapped lips on the flight 🙂
I collect the Fresh Soy Cleanser sample tubes whenever they are offered – takes off my makeup and is gentle for all weather! I also collect the little sample tubs from Sephora and fill them with whatever cream skincare products I need 😀
I always bring tea. I drink tea every day, all day and while I am excited to try tea from wherever I travel, I like to know I have a stash of my favorites with me. I also bring two old pillowcases in my carry on- one for each way. I stuff a couple of the airline pillows in one. Feels cleaner and more like home. Easier to sleep. You can always use them as laundry bags during your trip. I like to bring folding slippers for the hotel too.
My travel essentials are lip balm (Glossier Balm Dot Com in Birthday Cake), socks (the fluffiest pair I own) and wipes (you never know when you or your seatmate will need one).
My traveling essentials include Missha Soft Finish Sun Milk sunscreen, Peach & Lily Lazy Day wipes, and Bite Beauty lip mask!
These travel cases are gorgeous. My travel essentials are bite beauty agave lip mask, Paula’s choice skin recovery toner and a great moisturizer.
Always bring make up wipes, toner and moisturizer!
Those cases are adorable, and I actually prefer the grooming set over the beauty set of I had to choose for myself! It has a lip balm and hand balm which are must-haves for me on a flight. For me I really like the Fresh lip treatments and L’occitane shea hand cream. I also carry a mini facial oil (loving the Laura Mercier rose oil at the moment) to help when my skin is particularly dry.
I bought the white one! When I ttavel Inever forget my moisturizer, contact lens, and Kiehl’s lip balm
These cases are too cute, and I’m surprised at how much they’re able to hold. My travel essentials are: lip treatment, hours of podcasts / audiobooks to listen to, compression socks, and snacks. Everything else is a bonus!
Thank you for a great post!! I always bring sunscreen, moisturizer, and some sort of face mist
I have been traveling more for work lately and find that travel essentials are aquaphor for my lips, a Clinique hydrating moisture boost face mist (I spray it on my hands and pat it on my skin) and a huge bottle of water that I make myself finish before the plane lands.
I always bring Dior Creme de Rose lip balm, along with L’Occitane Shea butter hand cream and those little eye drops in vials.
I always make sure to include SK-II mask, Tatcha Luminous Dewy skin mist and Pat McGrath lip balm in Love Supreme in my travel kit.
I always bring a phone charger, extra facial moisturizer (currently DE LaLa Retro), and a plug-in essential oil diffuser to make hotel rooms feel more like home.
When I fly, I always bring moisturizing products because the plane is so dry. Hand lotion, face oils and lip balm.
My travel essentials are Purel wipes, Cetaphil lotion (for face & body), and Clarins lip oil. And the bigger carry-on from AWAY too, of course! I’ve traveled domestically and internationally several times this year (Alaska and Delta), and NEVER had a problem with constantly updated regulations and overhead bin space.
My travel essentials are a good lip balm, hand sanitizer, and a yummy smelling body/hand lotion.
Travel essentials for a long-haul flight – 8 Hour cream, moisturiser, warn socks and a good book!
My three travel essentials are Bose sound canceling headphones, iPad, and snacks.
My must haves are sunscreen, lip balm and wet wipes
I always try to make sure I bring a small flash light or candle in case the power goes out and a heating pad in case my back/feet give out. Also lots of lip balm.
Bose noise canceling headphones, hand sanitizer and a good hand cream and last but definitely not least my kindle paperwhite.
I always bring a phone charger, my Hydro Flask water bottle and my loofah gloves for the shower.
A power bank, Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks (usually at least one in Amethyst), lip balm and hand cream for the plane, earbuds, knitting.
My absolute must haves are: tissues, lip balm, hand cream, my eBook and a scarf.
Moisturizer, cleanser, lip balm, hand cream, spf
When I travel, I always have my earbuds, lip balm, water bottle, and snacks.
Trtl travel pillow (BEST one I’ve found), noise-cancelling headphones, and my Glossier Boy Brow.
What I always bring with me are Mon Guerlain deluxe sample, Benefit Benetint mini size because blush is such a game changer and a yellow undertone concealer like Bobbi Brown’s in Alabaster or Porcelain 🙂
i always bring along my pixi glow tonic mini, some sort of chapstick (right now it’s the bite agave lip balm) and the milky jelly cleanser now that they make the mini size!
When I travel, which I just did – I always bring a lip balm (right now lanolips 101 ointment), a handcream (currently by neutrogena), and then a bottle of water.
I always bring along my headphones, a book, body and hand cream and a good lip balm.
