On My Radar

On My Radar / New in Beauty

May 13, 2015

Happy Wednesday everyone! Here are some new releases that are on my beauty radar this week.

1 / Dior has released a Peter Philips Collection on Dior.com inspired by the Cruise 2015 show. The two nail polishes in NYC Peach 130 and BKLYN Pink 560 caught my eye along with the Diorette Addict 179 Lipstick. I ordered both nail polishes and will share swatches as soon as they arrive.

2 / With warm weather and sun I’m on the hunt for a good sport sunscreen. Most sunscreens irritate my skin with the exception of Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50 and Clarins (the one I use has been discontinued), but they aren’t sweat proof for outdoor sports and are prone to stinging the eyes with the tiniest bit of sweat. I have my eye on the Jack Black Sun Guard SPF 45 (which is supposed to be water resistant), Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Cream and First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair® Pure Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 40. Do you have any recs for a good sport sunscreen for sensitive skin?

3 / Marc Jacobs Beauty has released 18 shades of Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer which have replaced their original Sheer and Full Lip Vinyls. I’ve been playing with these for a few weeks now. First impressions = thumbs up, they give the lips a smooth cushiony feel. I will have swatches and the full review next week.

4 / L’Occitane has launched their Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balms which are inspired by the peonies sustainably grown by Jean-Luc Rivière in the foothills of the Vercors Mountains of Provence. Each tinted lip balm is enriched with shea butter and three of them have a colored tint. Review soon!

5 / Burberry Beauty has six shades of Lip & Cheek Blooms. I have Rose, Orange Blossom and Poppy shown above which were sent to me for review. I haven’t had a chance to play with them yet but the colors look really pretty in the pots.

6 / Charlotte Tilbury has launched her Eyes to Mesmerise Cream Shadows in the US. I have high hopes for these but haven’t ordered any of the colors. I’m trying to narrow down my picks to 2 or 3 colors! If you’ve tried these what did you think? These are available now at Net-A-Porter, Nordstrom, Beautylish, and Charlotte Tilbury.
7 / Givenchy has a new lipstick called Le Rouge-À-Porter. There’s something striking about the long sleek silver tube that makes these look incredible. I’m trying to resist the urge to order sight unseen as online stock swatches make it difficult to see what the colors really look like.

8 / Last but not least, Chanel Les Beiges has started to trickle in. I saw it in store at Saks Fifth Avenue, I still haven’t had a chance to properly play with the summer collection but I have high hopes for the nude nail polishes. It’s also online now:

The givenchy packaging is to die for, isn't it?

And I am really interested in these chanel les beiges products. Hopefully they will be launched here sometime soon and not, say, in July or so!

Yes the Givenchy packaging is so beautiful!

I got 5/6 of the eyes to mesmorize cream eye shadows (all except Cleopatra). I love them – they are really easy to blend and can go from a wash of color to very full on shine. What I like most is that they are shimmer not glitter – it is a very classy effect I think… and that's coming from a person who thinks CT puts too much glitter into everything. They do crease but I have very hooded eyes…. even with the creasing though I don't find they look bad and I don't think it's obvious without major scrutiny. Wear time is decent but not outstanding. Which colors are you thinking of getting?

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:01 pm

Thanks for the input on the CT! I'm still debating what colors to pick. I'm with you on the glitter lol!

Oooh I'm curious to see what sunscreen you decide on.

hi again Sabrina – in item #8, you say you have high copes for the Chanel nude nail polishes….i've been googling and can't find a reference to new nude nail shades from Chanel. can you share more details?
chanel makes THE prettiest nail shades imo, hands down!! i think they could improve their formulations, but no one can touch their colors.
thanks as always for your exciting posts and contributions to your fellow beauty lovers!!! xo sj

I'm super interested in in the L'Occitane lip balm vs the Fresh ones.

  • Tequila Mockingbird May 13, 2015 at 6:34 pm

The L'Occitane Tinted Balms look sooooooo much like the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment. I hope they're just as pigmented or moreso!

      I'll be reviewing soon!

    > Do you have any recs for a good sport sunscreen for sensitive skin?

    * La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Invisible Nutritive Oil SPF 50+ is photostable, has a VERY high PPD of 35 (which means it blocks the UVA wavelengths that are the biggest culprits toward photoaging; I think the highest PPD I've seen is 42), and leaves neither white cast nor sunscreen scent. It's about $75 from American retailer C.O. Bigelow but can be around $25 from European web retailers. I currently use this one daily since it doesn't make my eyes sting and being an oil allows me to skip moisturizing in the morning as a busy math+CS major/research assistant/artist/girlfriend.

    * La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme SPF 50+ has pretty much simliar advantages as the above but higher PPD of 42 and a slight white cast after heavy sweating/working out. Again, not available from US retailers but from European online retailers for $25-30.

    * Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF 50+ Cream has similar benefits as the LRP fluide extreme but is less runny since it's a cream. PPD 42. Again, pick up from an online retailer shipping from Europe.

    * CeraVe Sunscreen Stick with SPF 50 is my favorite physical sunscreen that plays nice with makeup, contains beneficial hyaluronic acid (water binder) + ceramides, and is readily available at most American drug stores.

Note: the European sunscreens I mentioned contain ingredients that have not been approved by the FDA yet are very popular in Europe and Asia because those ingredients have shown tangible pre-emptive anti-aging, anti-cancer results.

WOW–I really, really appreciate this and your readers in general, Sabrina. Such a wealth of information! I guess I shouldn't be surprised that only the best-of-the-best, beauty-obsessed would visit THE BEST beauty blog! Love it♥

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:03 pm

Hi Tequila Mockingbird – thank you so much for all the recommendations!! I've been on the hunt for a good one that doesn't give a white cast. I'll be traveling to Europe next month so I'll keep an eye out for the La Roche Posay – do you by chance know which retailers carry it? I'll be in Paris, London and then Athens.

    • Tequila Mockingbird May 21, 2015 at 2:26 am

Hi! Unfortunately, I don't live in Europe so unfortunately I'm not sure the exact names of the brick-and-mortar retailers that carry them besides the websites I visit like:

      * http://www.escentual.com/la-roche-posay/larocheposay117/ (La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Comfort Nutritive Oil SPF50+ 200ml)

      * http://www.lifeandlooks.com/en/La-Roche-Posay-Anthelios-XL-Spf-50-Smooth-Lotion/m-17181.aspx (the biggest package of LRP high PPD sunscreen I could find)

      * http://www.avibon.com/La-Roche-Posay-Anthelios-XL-SPF-50-Fluide-Extreme-3337872411939.htm (the LRP Anthelios XL Fluid Extreme I mentioned in the previous post)

Where are you going to visit, btw? Not sure about the specifics of other European countries, but any French Pharmacie with the glowing green crosses (yes, like medical MJ clinics in sunny California teehee) should carry La Roche Posay as well as Bioderma. According to other people who've visited french pharmacies, the LRP items that sell for $40+ (in California) should cost you approximately $15 a piece in Paris for non-travel sizes, so naturally, stocking up is a good idea.

Also, here's longer (though not exhaustive) list of photostable sunscreens:
      http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/26b86n/list_of_photostable_sunscreens_with_ppd/

Basically you should be able to find sunscreens with Mexoryl SX, Mexoryl XL, Tinosorb S, & Tinsorb M in various sunscreens outside the US, which are all (to my knowledge) effective anti-aging ingredients the FDA really should be approving.

Hope this helps! Will you document your EuroTrip here on your blog for us? 😀

Last annotation for the day, LOL, I promise!

I am a sucker for both sleek modernist design and shiny, uber pigmented, hydrating balm lipsticks. The Givenchy Le Rouge-A-Porter will destroy my bank account until I get one of those supposed 6 figure software engineering / "data science" jobs after graduation (they're out there and yeah people with just a bacherlor's have gotten them) *weeps uncontrollably*

  • Gail May 13, 2015 at 7:37 pm

I really love the new Avene Mineral Ultra-Light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion Face SPF 50 for my uber-sensitive skin. I can't say enough about it!

Thanks for the heads up on the Chanel powders on saks.com! Mine are now on the way! The Diors are looking tempting…. 🙂

  • Eileen May 14, 2015 at 2:09 am

I've been wearing the new First Aid Beauty mineral sunscreen for the past week and am very impressed with it. It has been very gentle on my dry, mature, rosacea prone skin. Beauty.com currently has 20% off site-wide (until 5/24) and so I ordered a few tubes of it. I simply can't tolerate any chemical screening agents on my face, neck, or décolletage. And, even though FAB applies with a white cast, it very quickly disappears. I used to love Chanel's SPF 50 until they reformulated a few years ago. Since then, I can no longer wear it wihout irritation 🙁 So many sunscreens billed as being for sensitive skin actually contain chemical screens in addition to the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. For example, SuperGoops mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin contains so much chemical stuff, it actually stung my skin.

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:04 pm

Hi Eileen, I've been playing with the First Aid Beauty one and like it too! It does leave a white cast on my skin too but it seems to absorb into the skin and disappear.

Love Bkyln Pink by Peter Phillips, I bought it a couple of weeks ago and it's not really like anything else I have. I also bought the Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom in Hygrangea and think they are fabulous value for the price. Going back for Rose & Poppy and maybe Peony but it's quite similar to Hydragea. I want everything on Les Beiges Launch Day…..warned my Chanel rep to put one everything to one side as this collection really hits the spot for me but we also have the Blue Notes Collection landing before Les Beiges. May 29th for Blues Notes and June 12th for Les Beiges. As for the CT eye creams…..too gimmicky and too Tom Ford wannabe. I'm not hugely impressed with CT apart from Lip products and eye pencils. Although Wonderglow, Bar of Gold and Filmstar Bronze & Glow are great. Can't help feeling that the rush to launch new products and capitalize on the initial success of the brand has left it a bit confused. CT is no longer go to for me I'm afraid as the novelty has well and truly worn off. I don't think is great value for money either. I have no issue paying Tom Ford prices because of the sheer amount of product you get for your money! Xx

Love your thoughts as always 🙂

  • michelle May 14, 2015 at 4:05 pm

^Loving these recs, Amanda! SUNSCREEN: I hear good things but haven't tried Drunken Elephant sunscreen. I was also in the market for a new mineral sunscreen, broad spectrum block. I watched Angie of HotandFlashy on Youtube and tried out her recommended, Exuvience, which I like. It is similar to the LPosay 50 tint that I also like. I then tried the Coola mineral sport active sunscreen and like it. Plus it smells delicious-Mimosa scent. I also tried Benefit & find it is interesting. Like an oil texture but not an oil–strange but good!☺

FYI — all the Chanel Les Beiges nail polishes and glossimers are currently in stock on neimanmarcus.com. All 6 are now on their way to me! Can't wait!!!

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:05 pm

      Thanks Nicole!

  • Jo May 14, 2015 at 10:06 pm

The best all physical sunscreen I've used and repurchased many times is Luzern La Defense. It has about 18% zinc oxide. Chemical sunscreens have to be put on first before any other products. Physical sunscreens can be put on last after everything else. Can't wait for your review of the Dior polishes I'll wait to see what you have to say before purchasing.

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:05 pm

Thanks for the Sunscreen Rec Jo! I just received the Dior order in the mail. Can't wait to swatch them, they look darker than I anticipated but still lovely!

I have been wearing the new Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield with a broad spectrum of SPF 30 for the past month now and love it. It is a primer, totally clear sunscreen and anti-aging product in one. It has peptides in it and also really makes for a flawless complexion under makeup. It is $65 for 1 oz.

  • Ellen May 15, 2015 at 11:58 am

I was also going to mention that I thought Skinceuticals had a sport sunscreen with only physical sunblocks with SPF 50. I've been usng Paula's Choice sunscreens exclusively fo ryears. Every daytime moisturizer she makes has sunscreen, most just non chemical sunscreens, and I know she has a new one with SPF 50. My favorite is the Resist daytime moisturizer for oily, combination skin. I have dry skin, but layered over any old moisturizer, this has SPF 30, is slightly tinted, so if you have to run out in 5 minutes, you still have sun protection and a slight evening out of your skintone. It is only zinc oxide sunscreen, but has antioxidants, resveritol, and other good stuff for your skin. So it doesn't just prevent wrinkles, but does try to be a treatment as well. Its not waterproof particlarly, but the physical sunblocks are naturally more water resistant. A German company called Laverna sells a spray on sunblock that contains only physical sunblock and is extremely water resistant, we used this exclusively when my kids werel little, because they liked the spray on and I liked the broad spectrum sunscreen with no fragrance or color. Sunscreen technology has been making amazing strides, it should not be too hard to find a product that will work. Don't be embarassed to look for stuff make for kids, they do not tolerate anything burnign their eyes, so you will find many gentle products there. As long as you stick with only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active ingedients, you'll be fine!! Good luck, and thanks for all your hard work!! I have just one question is return, I have unbelieveable dark circles/craters under my eyes. I have very fair skin so I've been using Bobbi Brown' s corrector in LIght Bisque for years. I tried MAC's prep and prime Radiant Rose as well. Thie pink tints just don't do it. Can a fair skined person use an orange tint like you mentioned in one of your recent posts? Any suggestions appreciated. Happy summer!

    • Sabrina May 19, 2015 at 6:10 pm

Hi Ellen, thank you for all the sunscreen recommendations and thoughts on each one!

For under-eye are you looking for a concealer/brightener? Or a treatment? I've been really happy with the YSL Touche Eclat under the eyes and NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is also amazing in terms of a natural-looking full coverage concealer. I'm not sure about orange on fair skin, it may be too dark/drastic if you have light skin.

I hope you can find a good one soon!

    • michelle May 21, 2015 at 10:19 pm

Obagi Matte Sunscreen SPF 50 is great for my sensitive, normal skin type. I mix it with Embryolisse moisturizer (somewhat diluting the SPF I know) and let it sink in for a minute or two. The concoction absorbs completely without leaving any telltale white residue. My skin is hypersensitive after using a retinol product back in October of 2014 and this mixture doesn't produce any redness or irritation. Plus, both products are reasonably priced (even though Embryolisse is imported from France). I live in Florida where the sun is relentless and this sunscreen doesn't melt in the heat and doesn't sting my eyes if I perspire. It stays in place really well. I also ride a motorcycle with my husband and use this before every ride. It truly protects my skin really well. There's not been even a hint of sunburn. For drier skin, the Neutrogena Face Shield, the oil free formula, is quite dewy and offers a very high SPF. I use this if my skin has reacted to some mysterious new ingredient in my makeup routine and has cause red, scaly patches. It is definitely a more moisturizing formula than the Obagi. I haven't tried HE sunscreens because my research has told me that sunscreen ingredients do not vary very much and that good drugstore brands or dermatologist recommended formulas are as good as, if not better, than their expensive, high end counterparts, i.e. Chanel, Dior, etc. Normally, I am a HE makeup brand buyer, finding that drugstore cosmetics, in general, cannot compete but this is one area where I digress from that policy. I see that your reviews generally encompass extremely expensive makeup but it would be nice to see some niche brands and middle of the road brands reviewed as well. Just FYI.

I love the CT eyes to mesmerise shadows. I got Bette and Jean and they are so easy to use and natural but can be built up to give a metallic look. If I got another it would be Marie Antoinette, they're the three most wearable shades in my opinion x
