A First Look at Charlotte Tilbury Beauty | Eyeshadow Palettes, Colour Chameleon Pencils, Mascara and Eyelash Curler

September 23, 2014

I’ve been playing with Charlotte Tilbury Beauty over the past month and have some items to share with you today. Included in today’s feature is a review on two of her eyeshadow quads, two shadow pencils, mascara and eyelash curler.

What I ordered with swatches of the shadows:

Colour Chameleon Color Morphing Eyeshadow Pencils in Champagne Diamonds and Amber Haze

I purchased two of the Eyeshadow Pencils in Amber Haze and Champagne Diamonds. These are creamy shadow pencils that set very quickly. I ordered mine sight unseen based on swatches I had seen on other blogs. They looked stunning online but I really should have read the reviews more closely. Amber Haze is a gorgeous warm shimmery copper brown. It applies very nicely on the eyes with super rich pigment. You do need to work with this one quickly because it sets (dries) very fast. When you apply these I recommend having all your brushes ready to blend right after you apply to smooth out harsh edges. Champagne Diamonds glitters like diamonds. This one didn’t work well for me, I found it too glittery and sparkly which made it extremely chunky/gritty feeling on my eyes. The base is pigmented if you pack the pencil on, but once blended it’s pretty sheer on me and all I saw was glitter.

Eyeshadow Quads in The Rock Chick and Uptown Girl

I ordered my quads from pre-made look sets. The Rock Chick is a smokey eye palette with a soft shimmery pale grey, a satiny medium grey, a deep matte charcoal and a glittery silvery shade. When I first saw these online I thought the glitter might be problematic for me and for all of those who prefer more conservative shadows. I was really surprised to find the glittery shade in The Rock Chick subtle enough to wear layered over the darkest shade for a pop of sparkle. The pigment of all the shadows is incredible, I was able to apply on the eyes and blend easily without any eye base required. The darkest matte charcoal color has a really good texture and allows you to get a good smokey eye. I did get some fall out when I applied the glitter on the face, but after it was applied to the eyes it stayed put.

For reference, the Rock Chick swatched next to Tom Ford’s discontinued She Wolf:

Uptown Girl is a cool-toned palette with a soft champagne shimmer, a lavender blue shimmer, a medium plum and a sparkling glittery pale pink. When I saw this one I suspected it might be too lavender/purple for me, but still wanted to give it a try. It’s a lovely palette but way out of my comfort zone with the purple tones. I definitely recommend you research swatches online on other blogs, purples tend to pull really purple on my skin while on others it might not look quite as blueish. The glitter in this one was a bit too much for me to wear comfortably but I suspect it was just the overall undertone of this palette I found too cool in general.

Full Fat Lashes Mascara and her Life Changing Lashes Eyelash Curler

Charlotte Tilbury’s Mascara currently comes in one shade. It’s called Full Fat Lashes Mascara. On my super straight short lashes this one defined nicely but unfortunately didn’t give much volume or hold curl. If you have thick lashes that only need a little bit of definition I think this will be a good one, but if you’re like me and need serious help with lashes, you might find this one too subtle. (My favorite mascaras here.)

Her eyelash curler comes in a rose gold color. I found it took a few uses to loosen the hinges (the first few times it seemed to stick when I pressed it together). It fits the curve of my eyes nicely so it doesn’t pinch the sides or edges. Her eyelash curler does indeed curl the lashes very nicely. I’m not sure I would call it life changing for me, I prefer Chanel’s and Le Metier de Beaute’s eyelash curlers for my eye shape and for better curling (see my reviews here). Still this is a very good lash curler. I took it with me on a recent weekend getaway and was really pleased with the way it worked.

Overall thoughts: I’m overall pleased with what I’ve tested from Charlotte Tilbury’s beauty line. I ordered all of my items sight unseen which many of you know can be hit or miss. Her quads are definitely worth a look even if you’re not a fan of glitter shadows. Had I been able to look at her line in person I probably would have skipped Uptown Girl and opted for one of the matte quads or something with warm tones. I really like The Rock Chick for a classic smokey eyeshadow palette. You can layer the colors for more intensity or blend them for something more subtle.

For her shadow pencils, Amber Haze is absolutely gorgeous although you do need to work very quickly with it. Once it sets it stays put like nothing else I’ve tried. Champagne Diamonds was a complete miss for me, but this is because I’m super picky when it comes to glitter in eyeshadows.

I can’t call her mascara a must-have for me – it came in two of the sets I bought otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased it (I gifted my second one to someone else to try).

Her eyelash curler is a nice to have but not must-have for me. I do believe finding the right lash curler depends on the shape of your eye and how deep-set they are. This one has a nice curve and is wide enough so it doesn’t pinch the corners of your eyes. For me, I do have others that I prefer but the Charlotte Tilbury version is still good.

Have you checked out Charlotte Tilbury’s line? What are your favorites? Or any other thoughts on anything you’ve tried and tested? I don’t have easy access to see the items in person so I’m living vicariously through those who have tested and swatched it.

You can find the Charlotte Tilbury beauty line in the US online at Nordstrom, Net-a-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman and Beautylish.

  • Thanks for this review, Sabrina! I was leaning toward Uptown Girl but after reading your review & see the pictures, it reminds me of a MAC quad I used to own that contains Satin Taupe (in the range of purplish taupe). And thanks for the heads up with the mascara. I have Champagne Diamonds and I feels patchy on my lids, although I love the color. Have you tried the blushes? I think it is some of the best ones I've tried so far.

    • Thank you Claire! You might still want to check other reviews on the mascara, others really love it. I have really sad lashes though so I need all the help I can get, lol. I have tried 2 of the blushes, and love, reviews soon 🙂 Which ones are your favorites?

    • Love Glow is my fave blush, in fact my fave peachy-pink-goldy blush to date. Mine was all broken up shipped from Selfridges but I still love it. I think I will try First Love next. Looking forward to your reviews!

Mascara-wise, some of the best ones are made from Japanese brands. In fact, I think Japanese brands excels in pretty much all eye makeup, liner, and lash products. I encourage you to give them a try if you can. I think they really know how their stuff when it comes to eyes and lashes.

  • I love Charlotte Tilbury, her products are total must haves, and I love her lip liners and eye shadow quads.

  • Glad for this review because it validated my own sense of waiting to see in person. Overall the line is too glittery for me. And I prefer matte cool tones and so have held back. Glad now that I did.

    • Hi Alison, there are a matte quad called The Sophisticate that you might want to check out (it looks cool-toned). The blushes, lipsticks and lipglosses are all glitter free, but yes I totally understand needing to wait and see in person.

  • Thank you for doing a comparison with She Wolf! I suspected they might be dupes! I'm really glad cause I missed She Wolf.

    • Yes, they are pretty close! I actually prefer the Charlotte Tilbury version, the matte charcoal shade is incredible.

  • I love The Rock Chic … Is this brand sold In France ? Emma

  • Oh my gosh, this is such a beautiful collection! Definitely adding a few bits to my christmas wish list. xx

  • Those quads look gorgeous! Too bad about the shadow pencils though.

  • Just wanted to say that I think you do your eyes really nicely!

  • These are all so beautiful!

  • CT's eyeshadow quads are beautiful. However, I've tried the colour chameleon sticks and didn't like them. Found them a bit too dry and glittery. Not my fave thing from her line. | Instagram

  • These r all gorgeous!!! Do u know when the Matte Revolution lipsticks will b available in the U.S.?

    • Hi Rachelle, I suspect they will be released eventually, but I haven't received any info yet.

Uptown Girl makes your eyes stand out – it is very pretty but I understand the comfort zone thing.
    Thanks for the review.

I think the purple quad looks great on you. Can you do a step by step or how-to tutorial on how you apply your eyeshadows?

    • Hi Anonymous, I will try to do one eventually, taking eye photos is still a challenge for me!

I bought the Sophisticate quad, which features all matte neutrals. It's probably boring to most people. Sometimes I layer on another shade with a bit of shimmer, like Nars Himalia or something from UD 3. The shadows are long lasting, smooth, easy to blend. Just too easy! It's been in my current rotation for when I need a polished look.

    • I'm going to have to give that one a look when I see the line in person, I really really love the matte texture of the grey shade in The Rock Chick.

  • Petunia

Thanks for your honest reviews. Rock Chick looks fabulous on you. I think I'll have to add this to my CT purchases 🙂
How do you feel about the "looks" Charlotte put together? Are you enjoying wearing the products together?
I am looking forward to seeing her holiday quad!

    • Hi Petunia, I purchased two of the "looks" because I was a bit overwhelmed with all the options, I felt purchasing a look would help me coordinate items.

So far I haven't used any of the looks together, but then I rarely wear one brand exclusively at any given time.

If I were to re-do my purchases I would have bought items individually but just because I'm picky that way.

    • Petunia

I rarely wear a brand head to toe or chin to forehead either. I can't wait for the blush reviews!

  • Jo

Your looks are so pretty. I was going to buy Champagne Diamonds and now I'm so glad I didn't. I love the mascara, it's one of the best I've used. It thickens, separates and curls my lashes very well. I do have some natural curl to my lashes though. I think the wand is outstanding.

    • Thank you Jo! I definitely think Champagne Diamonds is a pass. So great you love the mascara!

  • I have been using the Magic Cream for a few weeks now – I like it a lot – it's great for dry skin. Just wish it wasn't fragranced like it is, but it does go away pretty quickly. Just ordered a lipstick (Coachella Coral) and the Audrey eye pencil. I'm not a shadow girl so not tempted by the quads.

    • Hi Bisbee, I just received my order of the Magic Cream and mine smells like sunscreen. You're right the scent does fade after a bit but I wish it had a different scent. Still putting it to the test though.

Cochella Coral looks like such a gorgeous color.

  • LoriM

I have the Dark Pearl Chameleon shadow stick and like it – it's a much better color for me. I use it mainly as a liner.

    • Hi Lori, I'll add this to my list to check out next month 🙂 Sounds lovely!

I think the purple looks lovely on you, but I know YOU are the one who has to like it…..I have the Rock Chick and the Dolce Vita palettes and I love them both. I also have the kohl eye pencil in Elizabeth Violet and I like it very much. The glitter in the palettes is not over the top, and the other shades are great too.

    • Thank you Anonymous, the Dolce Vita looks so lovely, I'm trying to hold out until I can see it in person, it might be too warm/reddish for me although it looks so amazing in swatches. Torn between Dolce Vita and Golden Goddess.

The eyeshadow is actually beautiful on you! I am not feeling too sucked into her line because it is pricey and I was waiting for the reviews which seem to be very mixed-not as good as I expected given the phenom that she is made out to be. I think there's a lot of hype around her and personally, there's something about her makeup application that always looks far too made-up for my taste; thick foundation, lots of eyes-yuck. I think all this turns me off her line even though I know I can buy it and apply as light as I like:)

I just never feel *floored* after watching her videos the way I do Lisa Eldridge.
There. I said it all. *runs and hides from the lashings;)

    • Hi Michelle, I adore Lisa Eldridge, there's nobody like her! I do think the $52 is a bit steep for the packaging and overall feel of the quads, but the quality is definitely there.

  • i also think that both eyeshadow quads look beautiful and really like your application technique. could you detail your color placement? i've seen swatches on other sites and haven't been tempted to purchase (although i did get the wonder glow, eye kohls and some of the shadow pencils) but after seeing it on you they are currently both in my shopping basket! thank you :o)

  • I, too, would like to see a tutorial on how you apply your shadows and also I am wondering what brushes you use to get the application so perfect. I have been playing with my CT items and am very pleased with them. Good quality for prices that are not in the stratosphere of TF.

  • my fav charlotte tilbury product is the highlight contour powder;)love it.worth every penny

  • Love Charlotte Tilbury!She's a legend!and Lovely blog!!!
This might have been asked a lot but what do you use for lighting when you take pictures???They are amazing!!!

  • Oh my – thank you so much for swatching next to She Wolf because I own that and didn't know if I should go ahead with buying from Charlotte Tilbury too. But now I know that I can save my pennies and buy something else instead. The makeup looks great in these photos – great eyeshadow skills!

  • Michelle you have given me courage to say I think Lisa Eldriges videos need editing. When she is talking about products or applying her own make up I find she talks too long and stares back at herself a little too long as well. I know she is gorgeous and can apply make up well (Sophie Dahl!) but I have stopped watching the videos. Pixi Woo knows how to edit!

  • The Amber Haze tone is simply incredible!!!! I fell in love with it!
    Lots of love, xx

  • Uptown girl looks liks such an amazing quad! Would love to try some of Charlotte Tilbury's products but i really want a chance to physically have a swatch before I buy them!
    Amber haze looks stunning too
