Travel What's In My Bag

Inside My Traveling Bag – The Beauty Edition

September 8, 2011

I’m one who carries way too much in my purse and packs way too much when I travel. Every now and then I receive emails asking for travel and packing tips. My response usually consists of an apology (for lack of advice) and ends with a referral to Café Makeup’s traveling in Paris post (which is brilliant). The Non-Blonde also recently wrote a lovely feature to show us what she put inside her makeup case (I thought  her selections were beautifully edited & well chosen). I’ve been traveling this past week and thought I’d share what I brought with me to San Francisco all tucked into my Paul & Joe travel makeup case (yes, I over-packed).

  • Le Métier de Beauté Sample Packets of the new Revitalizing Anti-Aging Day Creme (one packet took me through an entire week and I brought 2 with me)
  • La Mer Travel Size Cleansing Gel (not photographed)
  • Lancome Travel Size Cleansing Water
  • Cotton Pads & Q-tips
  • Mini packets of Chanel Vitalumiere Aquas (not shown because they were tossed after use)
  • Chanel Powder Foundation in Tender Bisque
  • Cle de Peau Concealer in Beige
  • Edward Bess Daydream Bronzer
  • Edward Bess Afterglow Highlighter
  • Chanel Espiegle Blush
  • Chanel Beiges Highlighter
  • Hourglass Primer
  • Mini brushes (an assortment, yes way too many but I just grabbed a bunch and tossed them into my bag)
  • Two eyelash curlers from Chanel and Le Metier (because I did not realize I grabbed both)
  • Laura Mercier Platinum Metallic Eye Creme
  • Dior Summer 2011 Quints in Nude Tan and Rosy Tan
  • Mini Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara (not photographed)
  • An assortment of eyeliners from Le Métier de Beauté, D&G and Chanel
  • Le Métier de Beauté Cannes Lipgloss
  • Chanel Aragonite Glossimer (Spring 2011)
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Fetiche and Biarritz
  • Mini L’Artisan travel vial with Jo Malone Earl Grey Cologne

Overall thoughts: Usually I overpack because I think of all the what-if type of scenarios. This time I overpacked because I didn’t plan ahead.  Postponing the dreaded task of packing to the last minute caused me to pack way too many brushes and two eyelash curlers (many of which I did not need). I was rushed and at the last minute and grabbed a bunch of random things and threw them into my bag. If I were to go back in time and re-pack I would have limited the number of tools/brushes, highlighters and eyeliners I brought. The upside is that everything fit conveniently into the Paul & Joe makeup case (this was a gift with purchase long ago) which helped to limit the product I brought. Also there was not a single additional thing I wished I had brought – it appears I did not leave anything out. San Francisco is almost like a home away from home being packed with virtually every store, brand and item known to every major city. I could have not packed anything and been fine with all the options to choose from around Union Square.
How do you pack when you travel?

  • Glad to see that someone else packs like me 🙂

  • Oh my goodness, I'm stunned. A week of travel with just two lipsticks and two glosses…I wish I could do that. I try but I always end up with a set that includes, nude beige, brown, red coral, orange coral, violet, fuchsia, cool pink, neutral pink…I think I have a problem. The lip products always take up more room in the carryon than anything else.

  • I love your makeup case it's so cute. I always overpack. It's an issue!

Oh, I adore posts like this! I'm always plotting for my next trip, pouring over posts like this, ripping out magazine pages with advice, and worst of all, hunting down and buying perfect little travel palettes, bags, and accessories. All of this is with the goal of packing one tiny little bag with a wonderfully edited selection of glorious gems.
So what happens when a real trip comes up? I wait until the last minute, them completely over pack!! I recently took a ONE week to Vegas and Arizona and took about 3x the amount of stuff you posted here. LOL I wore maybe 1/8 of it.
    And yet, I'm still plotting…

Which eyelash curler do you prefer?

  • Am I the only one that thinks that this isn't much at all! I usually bring a smokey palette, a daytime palette and a few singles to mix and match. Usually a turquoise eye colour that I can dress up and down!

Lips – for summer a MLLB, a bright pink and coral. Winter – a plum, a red and MLBB.

Blush – a pinky tone and a peach tone.

  • I always overpack and I bring it as "Carry On". I NEED my makeup 😉

  • I actually don't think you overpacked at all – what does that say about me? LOL Although I guess it depends on how long you are traveling for…but, I think what you brought was just enough without being overkill. Looks like you could make a variety of looks if need be! So, I say – good job 🙂

  • Loving this post! Can I have your travel bag! I am lusting over all your makeup products, I have always wanted to try out Chanel products!

  • I love what you have in your travel bag 🙂 it's very complete and classy for travelling!

  • I don't think that's too much at all! OK, maybe not two eyelash curlers, but you said that was a mistake. In fact, I'd have taken along more lip color, for certain! Nice restraint and a nicely edited selection.

  • Nice job! Not bad at all for one-week trip. I tend to overpack lipsticks. Yay to Dior Rosy Nude! And I love your P&J bag!

  • I love all this makeup,,,love and my new favorite eyelash curler is the Hot Lashes curler..Best I have ever tried…
Keeps my straight lashes super curly, this with eyeliner and great lipstick —amazing~!

  • Lol you definitely reminded me of how I packed last time! I went to New zealand for a holiday including a 5 day hike (yes 5 days in the deep mountains) and I actually brought my own shampoo and conditioner (mini bottles) despite the cabins have them, plus my body/face sunscreen, wet wipes, even facial cottons and mini toner and concealer/powder etc (what I'd consider a girl's bare essentials). Surely regretted having that extra 0.5kg in my backpack for the next 5 days…
