Chanel Illusion d’Ombre for Fall 2011

June 21, 2011

The makeup looks on the Chanel Fall 2011 runway designed by Peter Philips were amazing (see them here from Cafe Makeup). The highlight of his collection includes a new cream-gel eyeshadow called Illusion d’Ombre which comes in 6 shades this fall. These are small potted shadows with a twist-off lid and small capped angled brush. The shades are:

81 Fantasme – a frosted sparkly white
82 Emerveille – a soft shimmering nude peach
83 Illusoire – a complex purple shimmer
84 Epatant – a highly frosted khaki silvery shimmer
85 Mirifique – intense black with silver sparkle
86 Ebloui – a reddish maroon with silver and plum sparkles

The shimmer: Each shade is complex with multi-dimensional sparkles. They are all intensely metallic and sparkly except for 82 Emerveille which is a soft luminous peach (still shimmery but the most natural). 81 is the most chunky in sparkle. 84 is the most frosty. 82 is the most natural. The others are somewhere in between.

The texture: These are cream-gel like shadows. Compared to Armani Eyes To Kill Shadows, these come domed without an insert inside. These have a bit more bounce with a squishy texture. Almost like jello, but not as jiggly. The texture is smooth even though there is high shimmer with rich metallic flecks. Mine might have jiggled too much while in transit – the product was on the lids of some of mine.

Application: I tried these with fingers and with the brush. The brushes are surprisingly useful and help pick up the color for an intense application. They are perfectly designed to pick up the color in a way that allows for intense application. The first shade I tried was 86 Ebloui (the red one). I applied it with my fingers and the result was an absolute mess. Red-eye gone bad. I removed everything and started over, this time using the brush. The difference was amazing – rich pigmented and smokey. These definitely require experimentation. I think the lighter shades will be easier to apply with fingers. 82 Emerveille is the easiest for me to apply with the fingers (goof-proof color).

Lasting power: For this I still need to experiment more. I haven’t been able to wear these for a full day to test how long they wear. So far, no smudging for the short period of time I’ve worn them though.
Overall: Very shimmery, but intriguing texture. I find both Armani Eyes to Kill and Chanel Illusion d’Ombres highly metallic, just different in texture and finish. It’s difficult to describe, but although they are both metallic cremes, they are just very unique and different. The finish will be different depending on application technique and how much you apply. The Chanel are very fun to play with. I highly recommend going to the counters to try these out in person. Once they hit the west coast, I will for sure be running to the counter to get application ideas from my local Chanel artists.

A few other resources I found helpful (they have amazing swatches):

The bigger swatch is with the finger, the smaller swatch is with the brush blended out.

hmmm I thought I wanted Epatant the most, but I think now I'll go for Illusoire first!

    TY for the swatches!

YAY! You are THE BEST! Thanks for the awesome swatches. I just placed my order last night for all but the black & red shadows, all 3 polishes and the Blush. I suspect that I will be going back to get the quad. After seeing your pictures on that I have decided I can't live without it!
I wonder if the creme eye shadow texture is similar to the Buxom creme shadows that came out last year (all named after breeds of dogs)

Wow! Wow! Wow! I'm dying to see these in person and might not be able to wait until they hit counters around me. The colors are intense (I am drawn to 84), and I have never had a jiggly eyeshadow before.

How do you feel about the colors themselves? Do you think the colors have been done before or are they pretty original? I think I'm loving Illusoire, Epatant, and Mirfique. I was going to order on Chanel.com but I think you're right I might wait for them to hit the counters so I can really play around with them. Thanks Sabrina for always being the go-to girl on new products!

Oooh, I love a cream shadow! I can't wait to test this out when it arrives at my Chanel counter at Nordstrom.

  • Larie June 21, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Ah, these colors are so gorgeous! Thanks for the notes about the application methods you tried, too.

  • PerilouslyPale June 21, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Thank you for the excellent review and pics! I think I can safely go with my original gut feeling to pass on these. I think if I'm to ever try one of these kinds of shadows I will finally bite the bullet and try out one of the Armani ETK ones.

Anything sparkly I have to get my hands on and these shadows are no exception!

  • Becca June 21, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Ohhh these are pretty! I'm interested to know how these compare to Perles de Chanel palette from Summer?? Are you going to do swatch comparisons? Thank you so much for this! DROOLING!

    So beautiful!

  • Gail June 21, 2011 at 6:27 pm

Thanks so much Sabrina. I love Ebloui and Emerveille – once they're blended out they don't look overly shimmery at all on your arm. Hope you're feeling better!

Thanks for the great photos & swatches! The texture does sound interesting. When I first saw them I thought they would be just like Armani Eyes to Kill. I ordered Illusoire & Epatant. 🙂 Can't wait for this collection to arrive at my local counter!

Very pretty, but also so shimmery. Not sure *I* could pull this off, but it looks great on your skin.

Thank you all for stopping by. As these hit counters I look forward to reading more reviews and see your swatches, application ideas etc! I apologize I have limited time, I'll address the questions:

Zuzu's Petals – they're only jiggly when you push them, sorry should have clarified, they're not QUITE like jello, but ALMOST like jello/jelly. If you shake it in the pot, I don't think you will see it jiggle. It's more of a touchy texture thing.

Elvira – Epatant is YOU. I have a Buxom shadow, I haven't used it much, so I can't recall what the texture is like, but I think Buxom is more spongy. Chanel has more spring-back.

Diane – good question. I think the colors are unique in the sense that I don't have anything that replicates the shimmer or complex metallic quality. On the other hand, they don't seem all that original though. I think these are definitely a must-wait-to-play-in-person kind of product. The price is high to just buy sight unseen (like I did in a temporary lapse of sanity).

PerilouslyPale – they are VERY sparkly and I think these will definitely be out of some people's comfort zone for the sparkle factor. If you want a cream sparkle palette that's softer the Ombrees Perles from Spring are much more wearable (if you don't have it already).

Becca – I didn't think about that comparison until now. Will try to do them soon! Thanks for the suggestion.

TiffanysMakeupstory – I'm concerned too but they seem to be tightly sealed. I'm keeping my finger crossed!

Gail – thank you, I think the worst is over, but still recovering.

Thanks so much for all these swatches!! Have you tried Armani Eye to Kill single eyeshadow yet? I'm wondering how these two are compared in pigmentation, texture, longevity etc.?

  • hautehedgehog June 22, 2011 at 1:35 am

These look absolutely stunning! I absolutely must have emerveille.

  • Joanne June 22, 2011 at 3:08 am

Are these out in stores yet?

  • DSK Steph June 22, 2011 at 4:46 am

I'm so sold on these shadows! They're gorgeous!!! They remind me a lot of the sparkle of the Jill Stuart eye jellies.

  • jess June 30, 2011 at 3:41 am

Oh wow,,they are very pretty to look at but seem too shimmery for my taste..although #82 and 83 don't look as shimmery as others. Hmm.. tempting..

  • ❤ July 21, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I told myself I wouldn't get these, but AGH, they look gorgeous! I especially like Illusoire, Epatant and Mirifique; of those 3 which would you suggest?

  • Bettina @BeautySwot September 20, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I love numbers 83 and 84. I HAVE to get one, it is not often I get tempted in this way but having swatched them the other day I NEED.

    Thanks for this
