Packing Travel What's In My Bag

Travel Makeup Kit | San Francisco Trip

October 14, 2013
I’ve been traveling for several days to San Francisco for a mini vacation. If you follow me via Instagram @beautylookbook you will see some snapshots of my travels around the city. More on some trip highlights to come soon here and on Styled Notes. Several of you have emailed me asking for a post on what I brought with me on my trip. I left for four days so I didn’t need much. However as usual I overpacked. The items I picked were fairly basic and versatile for a day to night look. Our trip was fairly laid back so I didn’t need to bring things different from what I normally wear for everyday.
This is what I brought with me in a Tom Ford Brush Holder and Bobbi Brown Train Case (both not available now, but previously released with sets or for holidays):
  • Skincare: mini sized items of Chanel makeup remover, Le Jour, Le Nuit, Sublimage cream and Le Blanc toner, a mini size of SK-II cleanser
  • Tools: a variety of MAC, Tom Ford and Chanel brushes, Chanel eyelash curler, Chanel Le Coton, Q-tips
  • Eyes: Le Metier de Beaute Carnaby Street Kaleidoscope, RMS Beauty Solar Cream Shadow, Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara Excess, Chanel Santal Eyeliner
  • Lips: Tom Ford Love Bruise Lipgloss, Armani Lipglosses, Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Caprice, YSL Rouge Volupte Candy, Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, Tom Ford Spanish Pink Lipstick, Chanel Nude Lipliner (I know it makes no sense to bring this many lip products on a trip, but it always happens)
  • Face: Tom Ford Foundation Stick #5, NARS Groenland Tinted Moisturizer, Cle de Peau Concealer, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette (more on this soon, but I love this!), Edward Bess Bronzer, Chanel Soho Powder, two MAC blushes in Poised and Barefaced, Chanel Les Beiges Powder, Edward Bess Sunlight Cream Highlighter
  • Hair: Mason Pearson Comb and Moroccan Oil

Did I use everything? Almost, but not quite. Items I found myself using the most included the basics. For color I used Chanel Rouge Coco Shines and Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss a lot. Edward Bess Daydream Bronzer was used everyday along with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. I used the one eyeshadow palette as well for Le Metier de Beaute Carnaby Street. The MAC blushes were the perfect shade of nude to go with virtually everything (I layered a lot).

What I could have skipped: the Tom Ford lipstick and Armani lipglosses
What I missed: my flat iron, hair dryer and normal shampoo, conditioner and shower gels (but mainly relied on hotel amenities), also shimmery fluid highlighters I couldn’t bring because of travel size restrictions

Inside My Traveling Bag – The Beauty Edition

September 8, 2011

I’m one who carries way too much in my purse and packs way too much when I travel. Every now and then I receive emails asking for travel and packing tips. My response usually consists of an apology (for lack of advice) and ends with a referral to Café Makeup’s traveling in Paris post (which is brilliant). The Non-Blonde also recently wrote a lovely feature to show us what she put inside her makeup case (I thought  her selections were beautifully edited & well chosen). I’ve been traveling this past week and thought I’d share what I brought with me to San Francisco all tucked into my Paul & Joe travel makeup case (yes, I over-packed).

Skincare:
  • Le Métier de Beauté Sample Packets of the new Revitalizing Anti-Aging Day Creme (one packet took me through an entire week and I brought 2 with me)
  • La Mer Travel Size Cleansing Gel (not photographed)
  • Lancome Travel Size Cleansing Water
  • Cotton Pads & Q-tips
Face:
  • Mini packets of Chanel Vitalumiere Aquas (not shown because they were tossed after use)
  • Chanel Powder Foundation in Tender Bisque
  • Cle de Peau Concealer in Beige
  • Edward Bess Daydream Bronzer
  • Edward Bess Afterglow Highlighter
  • Chanel Espiegle Blush
  • Chanel Beiges Highlighter
  • Hourglass Primer
Eyes:
  • Mini brushes (an assortment, yes way too many but I just grabbed a bunch and tossed them into my bag)
  • Two eyelash curlers from Chanel and Le Metier (because I did not realize I grabbed both)
  • Laura Mercier Platinum Metallic Eye Creme
  • Dior Summer 2011 Quints in Nude Tan and Rosy Tan
  • Mini Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara (not photographed)
  • An assortment of eyeliners from Le Métier de Beauté, D&G and Chanel
Lips:
  • Le Métier de Beauté Cannes Lipgloss
  • Chanel Aragonite Glossimer (Spring 2011)
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Fetiche and Biarritz
Misc:
  • Mini L’Artisan travel vial with Jo Malone Earl Grey Cologne

Overall thoughts: Usually I overpack because I think of all the what-if type of scenarios. This time I overpacked because I didn’t plan ahead.  Postponing the dreaded task of packing to the last minute caused me to pack way too many brushes and two eyelash curlers (many of which I did not need). I was rushed and at the last minute and grabbed a bunch of random things and threw them into my bag. If I were to go back in time and re-pack I would have limited the number of tools/brushes, highlighters and eyeliners I brought. The upside is that everything fit conveniently into the Paul & Joe makeup case (this was a gift with purchase long ago) which helped to limit the product I brought. Also there was not a single additional thing I wished I had brought – it appears I did not leave anything out. San Francisco is almost like a home away from home being packed with virtually every store, brand and item known to every major city. I could have not packed anything and been fine with all the options to choose from around Union Square.
