The Top 13 Beauty Discoveries in 2013

The top 13 beauty discoveries of 2013 from The Beauty Look Book (reviews from the past year are linked for each item listed):
  1. Caudalie Divine Oil – my absolute favorite beauty discovery this year
  2. By Terry Baume de Rose – pure luxury for the lips, worth every penny
  3. Drybar The Chaser Shine Pomade – my holy grail hair product to add shine, remove frizz, long lasting and smells amazing, my husband also loves this for his hair
  4. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – the perfect answer to glowing skin and my second favorite discovery this year
  5. Urban Decay Naked3 Palette – lovely rose-gold neutrals
  6. Chanel Taboo Le Vernis – a dramatic purple with red and silver shimmers, The Beauty Look Book’s second most popular post from 2013
  7. Dior Diablotine Le Vernis – the most striking intense coral red shimmer
  8. Tom Ford Illuminating Cheek Colors – unfortunately these were released in very limited quantities, but close alternatives you can get right now are MAC Magnetic Nude Skinfinishes in Magnetic Appeal and Fairly Precious
  9. Edward Bess Black Sea Mousse Foundations – I’ve mixed Light and Medium to get a good match, I’ve found that this is indeed the perfect full coverage foundation that gives a flawless airbrushed look that still manages to look natural, I truly hope Edward releases this to all his counters and in more shades (it was a QVC exclusive that sold out almost instantly)
  10. Chanel Les Beiges Powders – my favorite is 20 for all over, 30 and 40 work wonders for natural contouring and adding a soft glow of color to the face
  11. Diptyque 10-Piece Set – special release this holiday and the perfect way to try multiple scents at a more affordable price than buying the full sizes of each candle
  12. YSL Rouge Volupte Shines – my favorite lipsticks of the year for and The Beauty Look Book’s most popular post from 2013
  13. Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Initiation – holiday 2013 release and the perfect bronze shimmer

OK so with you and Temptalia naming Diablotine one of your favorite nail polishes of the year, I kinda feel the urge to rush out of my house and lay my hands on a bottle RIGHT NOW! I have Spring Ball and that's probably the shade I wore the most times this year. Love it with Dior Gel Coat! Have a great 2014, Sabrina! xx

Thank you! Diablotine is a must. There's really nothing like it. Spring Ball is a gorgeous peach.

This was a good year for foundation . I found useable shades for my pale, neutral /pink toned skin in MAC's reformulated Mineralize moisture foundation and Nars' Radiant Cream Compact foundation. I've also experimented with the slew of new finishing powders simultaneously released this year. I guess everyone was having the same trouble I was, with my regular powder suddenly turning any foundation I tried, yellow! Believe it or not, I even had that problem with some of the white finishing powders I tried. This may have something to do with one's own body chemistry causing oxidation between the two products, and have nothing to do with the original colors, but certainly some were more prone to the problem than others. I had the best success with Hourglass ' Ambiant Light powder in Ethereal Light and Dim Light, Diffused Light just added more g
yellow to the table. I found MUFE's finishing powder to feel very drying, but found an analogous newcomer in Purely Cosmetics ' Diamond Perfect Finish finishing powder! Thank you to whichever blogger out there who first mentioned this product! Wish I had an unlimited cosmetics budget, or at least a much bigger bathroom!!! But the foundation /powder search that started the year off, has hopefully ended successfully! Happy and healthy New Year to all!

How do you use Ambient powder and Les Beiges? Don't they pretty much do the same thing? I have been trying to figure this out when I see people say they use both.

Thank you for a great blog. Wishing you much happiness and continued success in 2014.

Hi Susan – sorry for the delay in responding. I would say there are many similarities between the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders and Chanel Les Beiges. Some can be used the same way. This is the difference I see:

Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders range from satiny to shimmer in finish. Some of the more matte-looking ones can be used all over the face as a setting powder (like Dim Light) depending on your skintone. I have medium olive skin and like to use the Hourglass Powders as a highlighter or a glow. I prefer the shimmery ones like Luminous Light which is my holy grail champagne shimmery highlighter and Radiant Light adds warmth to the cheeks and temples (or eyes).

Chanel Les Beiges are all matte finish (except 30 which has some shimmer). These are more flesh-toned and I use these as either a setting powder (think loose powder effect in a pressed form) or as a contouring or bronzer powder (30 and 40 are dark for me). You can use Les Beiges all over the face to add a glow but they won't have the same shimmer or lighting effect as Hourglass.

      Hope this helps!

Happy New Year everyone! Thanks for a wonderful year of posts, looking forward to 2014. I think I'd vote for Les Beiges powder. I didn't think it would do much but I took the plunge and realized it makes me look like a healthier me. I take it with me whenever I think I'll need to make my skin look more alive. lol
